COMPRESSION DEVICE FOR POST-BINDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 215, 1916.
Application filed June 9, 1914. Serial No. 843,968.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. JENKINS and SHEA SMITH, both citizens of the United States, residing at Oak Park and Chicago, respectively, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression Devices for Post-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for compressing loose leaves secured upon a post binder, preparatory to effecting a binding of the same in permanent form.
In our invention, we have sought to provide a form and construction of compressing device which will permit a greater range of adjustment and a consequent increase in pressure than is ordinarily obtainable; and to accomplish this end through the agency of supplemental parts which are relatively inexpensive and easy of application.
Other objects and uses of our invention will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a post binder with leaves held therebetween, showing in elevation a binder post with the device of the present invention in operative position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a conventional type of post binder as it appears before the compression device is operatively secured thereto; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the threaded extension member forming a part of the present invention.
A post binder is illustrated, comprising covers 4: between which a post 5 extends, to maintain in proper position a plurality of sheets or leaves 6. This post may consist of a plurality of units or sections 7 which are provided with complementary interlocking portions 8 so as to constitute in eflect a single binder post; or so far as the present 7 invention is concerned, this post may consist of but a single element incapable of being extended in length. Ordinarily, as indicated in Fig. 2, a cap 9 is secured to one end of the binder post, the cover 4: adjacent thereto being held in place thereby, or by other means, if preferred.
The device which embodies our invention is applicable for use principally when it is desired to permanently bind together a number of leaves. For this purpose, we utilize an extension member 10, (see Fig. 8) having an attaching end 11 arranged to interlock with the binder post. This extension member is exteriorly threaded, as shown, to receive a thumb screw 12. Through the thumb screw an axial bore 13 extends, enlarged except as to a portion 14: which is threaded to engage with the member 10. The screw 12, it is manifest, is thus capable of sliding over the post without interference until engagement between the portion 14 and the post body takes place. It will be observed that the thumb screw has an engaging portion 15, preferably knurled or serrated, so that a firm purchase thereupon may be obtained by the operators fingers; also a base portion 16 is provided for engaging with the adjacent cover of the binder. I
In ordinary practice post binders are used only until their capacity has been reached or until a transfer of contents is desired. The device herein described would not function in its intended manner until such a transfer or permanent binding is contemplated. At such time one or more extension members will be arranged operatively in position and a compression of the leaves be of fected preparatory to binding the same. It is evident when rotation of the thumb screw is commenced and the base portion 16 is compressed upon the adjacent cover 4, that a compression ofthe leaves will result, and this pressure may obviously be increased to the desired point by further manipulation of the thumb screw. Should it ever be found desirable the thumb screw can occupy an inverted position upon the threaded extension member, thereby increasing for some purposesits range of movement. To provide a range of compressing movement sufficient for the purposes mentioned, the particular construction and design of compression device herein described has been devised.
The operation of binding may be carried on in any approved manner while compression of the leaves obtains. Thereafter the extension member and thumb screw are detached and preserved for future similar use.
We claim:
1. The combination with a post binder, of an exteriorly threaded extension member having a diameter no greater than the binder post, and capable of interlocking with said post to constitute in effect an extension thereof, and a compression member having an axial bore therethrough, the outer end portion of which is threaded to engage With said extension member, and the remaining portion of Which is enlarged to not engage the post, whereby said compression. member, When rotated, may advance a portion 01 its body overa'po-rtion ofthe post,
substantially as described.
2. The combination With a post binder, of an extension member having a diameter no greater than the binder post, and capable of interlocking With sa-id post to constitute in effect an extension thereof, and a c0mpres- GEO. H. JENKINS; SHEA SMITH.
