UNITED STATES PATENT Orr Ion.
JONATHAN W. SHIVELEY, OF SARATOGASPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-FEMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,624, dated May 5, 1674 application filed November 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JONATHAN W. SHIVE- LEY, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Sara-toga and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fountain to be used with any pen and pen-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation referring to the annexed drawing, in whieh Figure 1 is a side view, showing my fountain applied to a pen-holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is aper. spective view of the fountain, and Fig. 4: is a similar view of a slide on the same.
A represents an ordinary pen-holder with tip B, in which the pen 0 is inserted. The fountain is composed of an open sleeve or thimble, D, shank E, and spoonG, all stamped out or otherwise made of one piece of sheet metal, as shown. I
This fountain may be applied to any penholder by slipping the thimble D on the tip or thimble B of the pen-holder, after which the pen is inserted in the holder. The fountain is then slipped down until the point of the fountainis near the point of the pen, and the spoon of the fountain is raised up a little from the pen. This is accomplished by means of a sliding clasp, a, attached on the shank E, and
whereby a good supply of ink may be kept all the time near the point of the pen.
The fountain thus constructed may be easily applied to any and all pens and pen-l1olders now in use, of whatever size they may be, and can be easily removed and cleaned and re placed.
New pens may be inserted in the pen-holder as often as desired without removing the fountain.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the thimble D, shank E, spoon G, the sliding clasp a, and tongue I), all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of November, 1873.
J. W. SHIVELEY.
