Description

w. o. KAISER LOCK FOR VALVES Filed May 31, 1922 M di ON WILLIAM 0. SEE, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFOMIA;
noon non VALVES.
Application filed May 81, 1922. Serial No. 584,888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. KAIsnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Valves, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention is an improved lockjorvalves, and particularly 'for gas cocks.
The object of my invention is to provide a lock for the-standard form of gas cock which may be easily applied with no change in the structure of the gas cock.
vAnother object of my invention is to provide a lock which issimple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
Referringto the drawing which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1' is a front'jview of my valve lock in position'on av gas cook. I
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1. p
' Figure 3 is a side view of ages cock-with thelock in section.
Figure 4 is a side view of the locking sleevp. I Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55' of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1- indicates a gas cock'of a well known construction, which com rises a body 2 and a plug 3 within said ody. A handle 4 is suitably secured to the plug 3. In the u per edge of the body .2 is
formed a note 5, and projecting into said notch is a pin 6 which is secured to the plug 3. The pin 6 moving in, the notch 5 determines the open and closed positions of the gas cock as will be readily understood.-
A sleeve 7 surrounds the plug 3 above the cock body 2 and below the handle 4, and
of a suflicient hei htto have a slight vertical movement etween said, body and handle. A flange 8 is formed in the u per end of the sleeve 7, the purpose of w ich will be described later, A notch 9 is formed in the u per face of the sleeve 7 to receive" the hen e 4. A segmental flange 10 depends from the lower edge of the sleeve 7 as;
in the closed position of the cock rests in the notch 5 between the pin'6 and the end of said notch. A spring 11 surrounds the up er end of the plu s3 and rests upon a she f 12 in the sleeve 7. 1
The method of operation of my lock is as follows: The sleeve 7 is moved. upwardly against'the spring 11 by means-of the flange 8 until the flange 10 clears the body 2; the notch 9 now fits in the handle 4 which compels the sleeve'to turn with said handle. The handlacan now be rotated to open the valve and the sleeve 7 rests u on the to of the body 2...1When the hand e is rotat to the closed position, the sprin 11 forces the flange 1Q downward into t e notch and the plug isheld in this position untll the sleeve is again raised.
Having describedmy invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a valve compris- 7 ing a body and a plug a handle onsaid plug,
a retractible sleeve surroundingisaid plug, means on said sleeve whereby the plug may be held in closed position, and a notch in said sleeve cooperating with said handle when said sleeve is 'retracted whereby the sleeve and plug mayrotate to ether.
2-.' In combination with a va ve comprising a body and a plug, a pin'in said plug adapted to project into a. notch in the body, a sleeve surroundin said plug, a flange depending from sai sleeve into the body notch{ and means for withdrawing said flange, whereby after the movement-of withdrawal of. said flange said plug and sleeve interengage for simultaneous rotation.
3. In combination with a valve having;-
a body, a plug and a handlev on said plug, :a pin in said plug adapted to project into a notch in the body, a sleeve surroun u said plug, a flange depending from sai sleeve and notch, a flange on the upper end of said sleeve, a notch in said up er flange adapted to receive'said handle, as elf insaid sleeve, and a spring bearing against said she f.
In testimony whereo I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM o. KAISER.
adapted to coact with said body I
