L. J. JONES PROTECTIVE SHIELD Filed Feb. 9. 1924 un?, 2'. w"

PATENT oFFicE.
LUELLA J. Jonas, arrastran Marron, -New YORK.
PROTECTIVE SHIELD.
To @ZZ whom t may concern: p
Be it known that I, LUnLLA J. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Pelliam Manor, Westchester County, and
State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in ProtectiveL powder, or other materialaincident to such toilet, especially in view of the fact that such operations are frequently employed after the person is completely dressed.
Shields of this character are usually affixed to the wearer by buttoning, or tying,v
together straps, or strings, attached to the body portion of the device, or by tucking them within the neck portion of the dress.y
The two first mentioned means of attachment require the wearer to reach backward, an awkward motion with liability to disarrange the hair, or costume, of the wearer, and the last mentioned operation is impossible if the dress is negligee, or does not encompass the neck of the wearer.
The device of my invention overcomes these objectionable features and presents Aa means whereby a shield may be placed and retained in position without the necessity of the wearer reaching backward, without the use of buttons or similar fastening means and which is capable of use irrespective of the height of the garment.
It has the further advantages of being artistic, small in compass, inexpensive and easy of use and adoption.
In a broad way, my` device comprisesay body portion to which two weights are attached by means of two pliable members. or ribbons, the weights being capable of maintaining the body portion in position when the straps, or ribbons, are vpositioned upon the shoulders of the wearer.y
I prefer to have a waterproof member attached to the body portion, but this element is not essential.
It will be noted that my device maybe of fanciful and artistic construction and that it is effective irrespective of the costume of the wearer.
Application' ledebruary 9, 1924. Serial No. 691,791.
I In the accompanying drawings, illustrat: ing one form of the device of my invention, similar parts Aare designatedyby similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a front view of one form of my device.
Figure 2 is a back view of Figure 1.
The particular form of the device of my invention, shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a body member 10 of silk, or other. pliable'material, to the upper edge of which is attached a ysmaller piece of flexible rubber sheeting material 11.
Attached in spaced positions to the upperl edge of the body member 10 are two ribbon members 1Q, 12 to the other extremities of which are two enclosed members, or bags, 13,
'13, within each of which'is a weight, preferably a metallic disc 14.
In order that the device may be attractive and artistic, it is shown with a fancy binding 15, the weight containers 10, 1() being; similarly embellished.
In operation, the body member 10 and the rubber member 11 are placed across the chest of the wearer, the latter being positioned inwardly and a weight container 13 thrown over each shoulder, the ribbons 12, 12 resting thereon. When in this position, the weights 14, 14 will retain the body member in fixed position.
It will be seen from the above that the bib, or protector, will be maintained in position without the necessity of buttons, tied ribbons or other similar fastening means and that it may be employed when the upper portion of the body of the wearer is without clothes for the attachment yof the device.
It is to be further noted that the rdevice is placed in-po'sitionby simply throwing'the weighted members over the shoulders, thus 'obviating the necessity of awkward and inconvenient kreaching behind the back for purposes of fastening it in position.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number, material, or arrangement of parts, as shown and described, as these are given simply as a means for the clear'description of my device.
What I claim is f- 1. In a protective shield, in combination,
a body portion of flexible material, a plurality of pliable straps attached to the body portion capable of placement over the shoulders cfa wearer and weights carried by the a body portion of flexible materials, a waterproof material upon one face of the body portion, two ribbons attached to the body portion capable of placement over the shoulders of a wearer, a weight container attached to the free extremity of each ribbon and a weight in each container capable of 20 holding the device in position when the straps are in shoulder osition.
Signed at New Yori, in the county of New York and State of New York this 7th day of February, 1924.
LUELLA J. JONES.
