To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HoRRAcn G. Tunisia KILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Binding and Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a comparatively simple, cheaply constructed, instantly operated device for cutting and rolling bias seam bindings.
To the attainment of the foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, ref erence is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this ap plication, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lid provement.

As disclosed by the drawings, I make use of a table whose top 1 is supported on legs 2 at the corners thereof. Journaled in bearings 3 below the top 1 is a shaft 4. that re ceives power from any desired source (not shown). On this shaft there is a pulley wheel 5.
Secured on the top of the table at points approximately equi-distant from the center of the wheel 5 there are standards 6 respectively, and journaled in bearings in the top of the standards there is a shaft 7. On the shaft 7, between the standards 6 there is a fixed pulley 8 and a loose pulley 9. Trained around one of these pulleys and around the pulleys 5 there is a belt 10. Pivotally secured to one of the standards 6 and having a forked portion engaging with the belt 10 there is a lever member 11 which is employed for shifting the belt from the fixed to the loose pulley, or vice versa.
On one end of the shaft 7 there is a disk cutter 12, and adiustably arranged on the standard 6 next to the cutter 12 there is a rod 13 which carries at its outer end a stop member 1 1, the said stop being disposed opposite one face of t is rotarycutter 12. The member 1.4, at its juncture with the rod 13 is provided with a depression 15, the purpose of which will presently be apparent. Suitable binding means is arranged between tiestandards 6 and the rod 13 whereby the stop shield 14: is adjusted with respect to the rotary cutter 12.
On its opposite en l there is secured to the shaft 7 a belt wheel 16.
Journaled in suitable hearings in the 7 standard 6 below the shaft 7 there is a second shaft 17. On one end of this shaft 17 there is a pulley 18 disposed opposite the pulley 16 and around these pulleys there is trained a belt 19. On the shaft 17 there is a second grooved wheel or pulley 20.
Journaled in suitable bearings above the top of the table 1 there is an elongated shaft 21. On one end of this shaft there is a pulley 22 arranged opposite the pulley and around these pulleys there is trained a belt 23. A standard 2 1 is secured on the top 1 near the end thereof opposite that on which the standards 6 are secured, the said standard having at its upper end a bearing 25 for a roller 26. Che roller comprises telescopic sections. suitable binding means 27 being provided for holding the sections adjusted. Suitable means is provided for holding the roller 26 from longitudinal movement through. the bearing 25 and on the outer end of the roller there is a pulley wheel 28 arran 'ed opposite a similar pulley wheel 29 on the shaft 21 and around these pulleys there is trained a belt 30.
The end of the shaft 26 is reduced and pointed, as at 31, the said pointed end being disposed to one side of the cutter 12 and received in the depression 15 in the stop shield 14-. To one side of the cutter there is secured on the top or bed of the table a socket member 82 that receives therein a rod 33 having its outer end headed, suitable binding means 3% holding the rod adjusted in the socket and the headed end of the rod serves as a rest for the roll of binding cut by the cutter 12.
Also on the bed or top 1 of the table be low the roller 26 there are comparatively short uprights 35 respectively having bearwhich the cloth is hung after it folded up.
The turning of the main shaft 4 will impart movement to the rotary cutter or knife, the movement of the shaft 7 imparts motion to the shaft 21 which in turn imparts motion to theroller 26, and the cloth upon the roller 26 to be severed has one of its ends contacted by the adjustable member 27, the
other end being in contact with the adjust able stop guard la. Thus the portion of the cloth on the reduced end 15 of the roller will be severed, the said reduced end being at all times out of contact with the knife.
It should have been stated that the standard 24 comprises sections connected. thereto by a swivel or ball and socket joint 47 so that the roller 26 may be swung toward or away from the knife 12, the inner wall of the depression 15 in the stop shield. 14 limitthe swinging of the said roller in the direction of the knife. Also over the roller 26 there is arranged a tube 48 which may be clamped thereto by the member 27. The cloth is hung over the rack 42. The end of the said cloth is passed between the roller 11 and the table 1 and between the rods 38 over the tube 48 on the roller 26. The tube 4?. on the roller is of papier iii-fiche, and the edge of the cloth is brought against disk flanges 89 on the rods 38 before being arranged over the paper tube on the roller 26. The knife runs toward the operator and the binding is rolled away from the operator, thus the binding is rolled up and wrapped. and any width can be had by moving the gauge stop 14 toward or away front the knifeor cutter.
The object of reducing the end of the shaft 26 adjacent to the knife is to permit of the knife cutting into the reduction so V v i neeneei that the tube, the'wrapping and the binding thereon wili be positively severedJ The stop shield 14 is adjustable to permit the rod 26 being moved toward the knife when the knife Wears.
On the standard 6 there is an arm 50 which extends directly over the top of the knife, and to the end of this arm there is fastened two springs 51, and on the lower end of each of the springs there are fastened two small emery wheels or disks 52. By pressing the springs together, the emery wheels will come in contact witl the knife to sharpen the same. Suitable means 54; is provided at the end of the arm 50 to permit of the same being adjusted whereby the emery wheels may he likewise adjusted with respect to the knife in the event of wear of the latter.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a rotary cutter, means for imparting motion thereto, a roller operated by said motion imparting means, said roller comprising sections, a swiveled support for the fixed section, supporting means for a cloth to be cut, guide means therefor, wrapping means can ried by said guide means received with the cloth on the roller, and an adjustable guard for the roller. disposed opposite one side of the knife.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a rotary cutter, means for imparting motion thereto, means for disconnecting said motion imparting means, a sectional swivelly supported roller, means actuated by the cutter operating means for revolving the roller, said roller having a reduced end disposed opposite the cutter, an adjustable guard having a depression to receive said end therein, an adjustable support below the roller and opposite the guard, a hanger for the cloth tobe out, a roller around which the cloth is directed, revoluble wrapping carrying rods also around which the cloth is directed, and a paper tube on the roller receiving the cloth, all as and for the purpose set forth.
