Be it known that I, AMos I'IARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medium and High Pressure Trip Traps, of which the following is a descri tion.
IV y invention belongs to that general class of devices known as traps, and relates particularly to a trap or steam system which is substantially a trap suitable for high, me-' dium or low pressures. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, coinpact, durable, reliable, eflicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. It hasparticularly as an object the production of a trap of the kind described having a minimum of movingparts and connecting mechanisms, and without fixed or rigid connections. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, I provide a casing consisting of a shell 1 of suitable material, size and shape, which is preferably provided with a closure or top part 2 which may be secured in place by bolts 3 or the equivalent forthe purpose. Generally a gasket or packing 4 is arranged between the casing part 1 and the closure part 2 to provide a tight fit and leak-proof joint. The device is provided with an inlet 5 and an outlet 6 located at the desired pointsand of the desired sizes. Arranged within the casing is a float 12 of suitable material and of the preferred size and shape, the same carrying a valve member 1 1 arranged to control the passage of fluid through the tube 15 communicating with the outlet 6. As shown, there is provided a valve seat 16 which is carried by the lower end of The valve seat is made sothat it may be removed in order to renew the same, and in the construction shown, may be reversed. Generally I prefer to provide the tube 15 with the inwardly projecting parts 15 which will overlie the end of the seat and protect the same against wear and corrosion so that when it is reversed it is in good condition. The seat 16 is provided with a port 17 therethrough. As shown, the float is pro vided with the tube 18 of a size to surround the depending tube 15, and the same has openings or ports 19 adjacent the valve. The part 1 is preferably provided with a projecting part 20 upon which the float may seat when it is in its open position. As most clearly shown in Figure 1, there is provided an arm 21 which is secured thereto in any suitable manner, and which carries a rod 21, a
it being understood that the rod may be carried in any equivalent manner, for, example from the top part 2. I prefer to secure the rod 21 to the arm 21 so that it may be adjusted in or out, the purpose of this being more fully described hereinafter. The float is arranged to engage with the lower end of rod 21, which is of the desired length, and in the construction illustrated, the float is provided with a projecting part 23 which will engage the end of the rod when the float is in its closed position. As shown, the tube 14 communicates with the chamber 241, which equivalent means for the purpose. In some cases, in lieu of the rod 21 and part 23, I provide a pin 84 (see Fig. 8) which I have also shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, which will serve as a fulcrum point similar to the rod 21, but in this case being near to the valve, the leverage is increased or modified.
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: Ordinarily the float is carried and maintained into its closed position by flotation as indicated in the dotted lines in Figure 1, moving the valve 1st so as to close the port 17 in the part 16 at the lower end of the tube 15. The flotation and the pressure in the system maintains the float in a position where the valve is closed until suificient water or fluid has overflowed into the float, overbalancing it. Generally the parts are so designed that they remain closed until the same is about threequarters filled. The water in the float overbalances the same and tilts it slightly downward at the opposite side to where the valve is, and at the same time the bracket 23 in contact with the rod 2 forms a leverage, which substantially pries the float loose, permitting it to sink or fall to the bottom of the trap. The pressure or vacuum in the system causes the water in the float to be driven up through the port 17 and out through the outlet 6 until substantially all of the water is discharged from the float, after which it rises and closes the port 17, the water remaining in the float sealing the valve and preventing leakage of steam. The operations are repeated as often as the float is filled with water of condensation. When the body of the trap around the outside of the float is filled with water up to the top of the float, the float is in a slightly off-horizontal position due to the extra weight ofl the center of the float. As the open float fills with water of condensation, the float is gradually drawn into horizontal position, moving the valve from its shut position but not fopening it. From this horizontal position, as the float fills, it begins to fall in a reverse horizontal position until the bracket 23, as described, engages the rod 21, whereupon the trap substantially instantaneously opens and discharges the water within the float. By adjusting the position of the rod in its arm 21, the leverage may be increased or decreased and the operation varied. The operation is the same with the pin 34;, but in this case the distance of the fulcrum from the valve is comparatively short.
It will be particularly noted that the float has no fixed or rigid connection, and is not secured in position by hinges, levers or the like connecting devices. The device is substantially noiseless in operation and opens or closes sufficiently to produce the desired results.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various other imniateria modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a cup-shaped float arranged therein, means for controlling the passage of fluid from the float through said outlet, including a valve member carried by the float, and means for controlling the movement of the float, whereby the valve is opened in a predetermined manner, said last mentioned means engaging one side of the float during its filling whereby the same is tilted.
2. In a device or the kind described and in combination, a casing, a float arranged therein normally substantially level and movable by the buoyancy of the liquid in said casing, means cooperating with said float for controlling the discharge of fluid from the casing, and means for controlling the float upon the accumulation of fluid therein, whereby the same will be tilted after a predetermined movement of the float.
3. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing, a float arranged therein normally substantially level and movable by the buoyancy of the liquid in said casing, a valve cooperating with said float for controlling the discharge of fluid from the casing, and means for engaging and controlling the float upon the accumula- -tion of fluid therein, whereby the same will be tilted to open the valve after a predetermined movement of the float.
In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a float arranged within said casing and provided with a sleeve extending upwardly therein at one side of the center of the float, said sleeve provided with an opening adjacent the bottom thereof, a pipe communicating with said outlet and projecting into said sleeve, said pipe provided with a valve seat adjacent the lower end of the sleeve, and a. valve arranged to cooperate therewith carried by the float within the sleeve, and means for guiding the float.
5. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing'having an inlet and an outlet, 2. float arranged within said casing and provided with a sleeve'extending upwardly therein at one side of the center of the float, said sleeve provided with an opening adjacent the bottom thereof, a pipe communicating with said outlet and projecting into said sleeve, said pipe provided with a removable valve seat adjacent the lower end of the sleeve, and a valve arranged to cooperate therewith carried by the float within the sleeve, means for controlling the movement of the float duringits movement to open the valve, and means for guiding the float.
6. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a cup-shaped float arranged within said casing and provided with a sleeve extending upwardly therein at one side of C the float, said sleeve provided with an opening adjacent the bottom thereof, a pipe communicating with said outlet and projecting into said sleeve, said pipe provided with a valve seat adjacent the lower end of the sleeve, means for engaging one side of the float during its filling. whereby the same is tilted in a predetermined manner, and a valve carried by the float arranged to cooperate with said seat, and means for guiding the float.
7. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a float arranged within said casing and provided with a sleeve extending upwardly therein at one side of the float, said sleeve provided with an opening adjacent the bottom thereof, a pipe communicating withsaid outlet and projecting into said sleeve, said pipe provided with a valve seat adjacent the lower end of the sleeve, and a. valve arranged to cooperate therewith carried by the float, means for guiding the float, means for limiting the movement of the float in one direction, whereby when the valve is closed and the float is tilted on one side, said limiting means will serve as a fulcrum.
8. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet adjacent the bottom and with an outlet adjacent the top, a. baflie arranged adjacent said inlet, a cup-shaped float arranged in the casing, means for normally supporting said float above the bottom of the casing,
said float provided with a sleeve on the interior thereof at one side of the float, said sleeve having ports adjacent'the lower end thereof, a. tubular part communicating .with the casing outlet and depending into and loosely fitting said sleeve, a valve seat arranged at the lower end of said part, a valve carried by the float and arranged to cooperate with said seat and normally prevent the passage of fluid from the float through the outlet, and means for normally preventing the upward movement of the side of the float adjacent said valve when the opposite side and the float is depressed, whereby the valve is disengaged from its seat when a predetermined amount of fluid enters the float, and means for guiding the float.
9. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet adjacent the bottom and with an outlet adjacent the top, a baflie arranged adjacent said inlet, a cup-shaped float arranged in the casing, means for normally supporting said float above the bottom of the casing, said float provided with a, sleeve on the interior thereof at one side of the float, said sleeve having ports adjacent the lower end thereof, a tubular part communicating with the easing outlet and depending into and loosely fitting said sleeve, a valve seat arranged at the lower end of said part, a valve carried by the float and arranged to cooperate with said seat and normally prevent the passage of fluid from the float through the outlet, and adjustable means for normally preventing the upward movement of the side of the float adjacent said valve when the opposite side and the float is depressed by the contained water, and the leverage is increased, whereby the valve is disengaged from its seat when a predetermined amount of fluid Enters the float, and means for guiding the oat.
10. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a. float arranged within said casing and provided with a sleeve extending upwardly therein at one side of the float,
said sleeve provided with an opening adjacent the bottom thereof, a pipe communicating with said outlet and projecting into said sleeve, said pipe provided with a valve seat adjacent the lower end of the tube, and a valve arranged to cooperate therewith carried by the float, means for guiding the float, means for limiting the movement of the float in one direction, whereby when the valve is closed the float is tilted on one side by the weight of the contained water decreasing the buoyancy, and said limiting means will serve as a fulcrum and afford an increased leverage on the valve.
