To (/17 710m it m 031 concern Be it known that I, Amos HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in High and Medium Pressure Trip Traps, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as traps, and relates particularly to a trap for steam or like systems suitable for high, medium or low pressure. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, compact, durable, reliable, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. It has particularly as an object the production of a trap of the kind described which has a minimum of moving parts and'connecting mechanisms,
which trap will be sensitive and yet reliable in operation. Many other objects and advantages of the construction heroin shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
-To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointedout in the claims.

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substan tially on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, I have provided a casing of suitable material, size and shape, the same in the preferred construction consisting of a. shell part 1 providedwitha closure 2, the closure being maintained in place by screws or bolts 3, or their equivalents for the purpose. I also provide a gasket or packing ring 4 of suitable material between the two parts of the casing so as to seal the same. The casing is provided with an inlet 5 and an outlet 6, the
same being preferably formed with a battle 7 at the inlet,- which is provided with ports 9 and 10. In some cases it is desirable to only employ one port, and infthis case the one may be plugged as shown in Figure 1 inwhich the port 10is closed by. a plug 11. Arranged within the casing is a float 12 of suitable size, shape and material, the same being provided with the valve member 14 arranged to seal. the lower end of the discharge tube 15, as will be more fully described hereafter. I have illustrated the float 12 provided with a cover or top part 38, the same having an opening through which the tube 15 -may extend. I have also shown a port or opening 83 in the side of the float, and aguard member or part 34 which forms a conduit, the open end of which is adjacent the lower portion of the float. The port orlopening '33 maybe thedesired distance from the bottom of the float and more than one maybe provided if preferred. The purpose of the opening 33 and the part 34 will be explained more fully hereafter in the operation of the device. ;As shown, the depending tube 15 carries are newable as well as a reversible valve seat member 16 which is provided with a passage 17 therethrough. The seat 16.is arranged to cooperate with the valve 14 which, as shown, is preferably provided with a rim or ridge 18 arranged to cooperate with the seat. The ridge 18 is rounded in the preferred construction. I have shown guiding members 19 on the float, the same being secured thereto and constructed to cooperate with the tube 15, and I have shown other guiding mechanism, as will be hereafter described. If desired, the casing part 1 may be provided with a projecting part .20 upon which the float may be supported when in the open or discharge position shown in Figure 1. Adjustably mounted upon the tube 15 is an arm 22 to which is adjustably secured a rod or' pin 21, the same arranged tocooperate with a .member 23 mounted upon the float. I Where it is not desired to provide foradjustment of the rod 21, the same may be obviously mounted on the top part2. I
have shown cooperatingguiding members 24 and 25, and 26 and 27 which tend to guide the opposite side of the float and prevent the sam pivoting about the tube 15.
A pipe or conductor 28 is connected to the inlet 5 and a discharge pipe or conductor 29 may be connected to the inlet 6. I have shown a pet-cock or relief valve 30 and a drain opening which is normally closed by a plug 31. In the construction shown, the closure 2 is formed with the chamber 32 which connects the interior of the tube 5 with the discharge port 6.
In Figure 3 I have illustrated a substitute for the rod 21. Referring to thisfigure, 35 represents a pin which may be secured to the tube, or as shown, to the valve seat 16, and which is arranged to cooperate with the valve 14 in a manner to be hereafter described. It preferred, a small weight 36 may be arranged on the side of the float opposite the valve and guiding mechanism, so as to partially or entirely counterbalance the'parts at the other side. In the construction shown, I have provided a screw 37 for securing the same in place, it being understood that any equivalent may be employed for the purpose.
Figures 4 and 5 represent a similar construction, 41 and 42 constituting the casing of suitable size, shape and construction, having an inlet and outlet similar to the casing described. In this case the float 43 is made of some length, the casing being correspondingly enlarged. The bottom of the casing is provided with the plug or extending part 44 corresponding to part 20 shown in Figure 1, and tube 45, seat 46 and valve 47 correspond to the other construction. If desired, the float may be provided with a top 48 which, however, is provided with an opening of a size to loosely fit the tube 45 so that the float may operate and not bind. The float is shown with a port 49, and a conduit. is formed "from the port to adjacent the bot tom of the casing by the guard 50.
The operation of the device maybe briefly described as follows Assuming that the device is constructed as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the sameinstalled in a high or low pressure system. Ordinarily there will be water of condensation in the casing so that the float is raised suflicicntly to bring the valve in position to close the-admission through port 17. As water enters the easing. it will partially "fill the same and when the same reaches the level of the opening 33 in the float, water will begin to flow into the float. It will be noted that, owing to the member 34, the water entering the float will be drawn from below the level outside. con sequently it there is any oil or grease or the like floating on the top of the water, the same will not enter the float to any extent. When the water reaches the height in the float where the weight of the same overtendency for the float to slightly tip, and at that time it will be noted that the rod 21 or pin 35, depending upon which is used, will act as a fulcrum point so that there will be considerable leverage exerted at the valve end, and notwithstanding that the same is held firmly in closed position. the same will be easily pried loose. t will be obvious that it is easier to pull the same oil at an angle or by tilting the same than it would be to pull it straight off, and by virtue of the leverage exerted, the same will pull ofl? easily and quickly. The weight 36 may be of a size which will produce the desired action,'it be ing understood that this may be modified as desired. lVhere the rod 21 is used, and the same adjustably mounted on an arm as shown, the leverage may be varied by-shifting the position of the rod on the arm. Obviously, with the construction in which the pin 35 is employed, the leverage will be considerably greater.
With the construction shown in Figure 4, in which. the float is elongated, it will be obvious that a considerably greater leverage may be obtained than with the construction shown in Figure 1. In other respects the construction operates the same. By employing the closed float with the port as shown, sand, sediment, dirt and grease are to a large extent prevented from entering the float, where the same may interfere with the most efficient operation of the valve.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the. same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction,
arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. 'In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an float provided with a conduit arranged to conduct the fluid from adjacent the lower portion of the casing into the float at a point adjacent the top thereof.
2. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein for controlling the discharge of fluid through said outlet, means for conducting fluid from the interior of the float to said outlet, said float provided with a conduit arranged to conduct the fluid at the exterior of the float from below the normal level thereof in the casing intothe float, and
means for controlling the operation of the float. I
3. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet, a float arranged therein, a pipe projecting into the float, a valve member in the float arranged to cooperate with the lower end of said pipe and prevent the passage of water from the float through said pipe. when the float is in its raised position, and means for conducting water into the float from adjacent the lower part of the casing.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet, a float arranged therein, a pipe projecting into the float to adjacent the bottom thereof, a valve member carried by the float arranged to cooperate with the lower end of said pipe and prevent the passage of water from the float through said pipe when the float is in its raised position, and means for conducting water into the float from adjacent the lower part of the casing, and means for controlling the operation of the float when the water therein reaches a predetermined level.
5. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port adjacent the upper part'thereof and constructed with a conduit on the exterior extending from said port to adj-acent the lower portion thereof, a discharge pipe extending from said out let in the casing to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereof, said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with said pipe and prevent the passage of water there through from the float.
6. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port adjacent the upper part thereof and constructed with a conduit extending from said port to adjacent the lower portion thereof, a discharge pipe extending from said outlet in the casing to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereof, said float provided with a disk valve member arranged to cooperate with the lower end of said pipe and prevent the passage of water therethrough from the float.
7. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port adjacent the upper part thereof and constructed with a conduit extending from said port to adjacent the lower portion thereof, a discharge pipe extending from said outlet in the oasing to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereof, said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with said pipe and prevent the passage of water therethrough from the float, and means for controlling the movement of the float whereby the valve is opened in apredetermined manner.
8. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port adjacent the determined manner.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided'with an inlet and outlet, a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port at one side the upper part thereof and constructed with a conduiton the exterior from said port adjacent the lower portion thereof, a discharge conduit extending from said outlet in the casing to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereat, said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with the end of the conduit and prevent the passage of water therethrough from the float when the valve is closed, and means for controlling the float upon the accumulation of fluid therein whereby the same will be tilted in a predetermined manner and open the valve.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet. a closed float arranged therein having an inlet port adjacent the upper part thereof and constructed with means for conducting water from the easing to the port, a discharge pipe extending from said outlet into the casing through the top of the float to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereof, said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with said pipe and control the passage of water therethrough "from the float, and means cooperating with the float for controlling the movement thereot' whereby when the float is partially filled with water the float will be tilted, thereby gradually opening the valve in a predetermined manner.

In a device of the kind described and in combination. a casing provided with an inlet and outlet. a. closed float aranged therein having an inlet port, a discharge pipe extending from said outlet into the casing: to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom. thereof, said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with said pipe and control the passage of water therethrougg'h from the float. and .VltlillH-EZIDS tor countcrhalancing the weight of the valve, and means (rowel-a with the float for controlling; the movement thereof whereby when the float partially filled with water the float will he til'ed. thereby gradually opening the i alve in prez'letermined manner.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casino; provided with an inlet and outlet. a closed float arrange-:1 therein having an inlet port adjacent the upper part thereof, a (llSCl12i1ZQ conduit extending from said outlet in the casing to the interior of the float adjacent the bottom thereof. said float provided with a valve member arranged to cooperate with conduit and control the passage of water there through from the float, and. means for engaging; and controlling the movement of the float wherebv when the valve is closed and a predetermined amount of water enters the float, the float will be t lted and said engaging means serve as a fulcrum and atford an increased leverage on the valve.

In a device oi the kind described and in combination. a casing provided with an inlet and outlet. a closed elongated float argaging and controlling the movement of the float whereby when'the valve is closed and a predetermined amount of water enters the float. the float will be tilted and said engaging means serve as a fulcrum and afford an increased leverage on the valve.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a float arrange-d therein for controlling the discharge of fluid through said outlet, means for conducting fluid from I the interior of the float to said outlet, means arranged to conduct the fluid from below the normal level in the easing into the float, the float having no other inlet thereinto, and means for controlling the operation of the float.
16. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a casing provided with an inlet and outlet, a float arranged therein for controlling: the discharge of fluid through said outlet, means for conducting fluid from tlie intrr or oil the float to said outlet, means arranged to conduct the fluid from adjacent the lower portion of the casing into the float at a point adjacent the top thereof, said float having no other inlet means thereinto.
