Description

Patented pr. 8, 1924.
UNETED STATES SHINICHI NISI-IIMURA, OF HONO'LULU, TERRITORY OF HAWAII.
WRENCH. y
YApplication mea April 1e,V 1922. serial No. 554,628.
To all whom t may concern."
Be 1t known that I, SHINIGHI NISHIMURA, a citizen of Japan, residing at Honolulu,
Territory of Hawaii, have invented neWv and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to an improvement in wrenches.
My object is to produce a wrench in which the movable jaw may be quickly adjusted with respect to the stationary jaw to engage an article between the jaws and thereafter firmly bind the article between the jaws and lock the jaws in engagement with the article.
A further object is to produce a nut and bolt wrench in which the movable jaw has its shank toothed and guided through the body or head of the nuts whereby the movable jaw may be freely and quickly adjusted with respect to the stationary jaw, the said body or head of the wrench having pivotally supported and longitudinally adjustable therein an eccentrically mounted nut which, when turned to one position will engage with the teeth of the movable jaw and in such turning will be moved longitudinally to advance the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw.
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this specification.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal edge view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on approximately the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
The handle 1, of my improved wrench is arranged angularly with respect to the fixed jaw 2 thereof. Between the jaw and handle the wrench 1 is enlarged to pro-vide the same with a body portion or head 3.
The head 3 has its outer edge straight, but is arranged at an upward angle from its said edge to its juncture with the active face of the jaw 2. The head, from its said outer straight face is centrally grooved, as at 4, the lower or inner portion of the groove is enlarged and rounded, as at 5. The head is provided with a transverse substantially rectangular opening 6 that communicates with the rounded portion 5 of the groove or channel 4. The head is provided with a rounded opening that intersects the rectangular opening 6, and one wall of this opening is formed with a groove 6, the opening,
adjacent to the outer portion thereof being threaded. Received in this opening there is a screw member 7. The screw preferably has a nonsthreaded outer portion 7 formed with a bit 7 to be received in the referred to groove 6 in the round opening 6". The opening 6 is closed by'a nonheaded screw 8, the latter having its outer end kerfed whereby the same may be inserted in the opening or removed therefrom by a screw driver.' Y
Eccentrically mountedV ron the threaded member 7 is a nut '9. The bore of the nut the bolt, and the said nut, on the edge thereof farthest away from .the bolt is provided' with peripheral teeth 10. By reference to the drawing, it will be seen that the inner walls of the teeth disposed adjacent to what I have termed the outer edge of the head 3, that is the edge of the head disposed opposite that provided with the jaw 2, are arranged at an inclination. It will be apparent that the turning of the nut on the screw or bolt will cause the said nut to be moved longitudinally in the opening 6 and further that when the nut is turned in one direction the same will` move toward the head 2 and in an opposite direction toward what I have termed the outer edge of the head.
The movable jaw is indicated by the numeral 11, the same being provided with a reduced shank 12 which extends a suitable distance beyond the active face of the jaw 11, the outer edge of the said extension being arranged at an inclination, 'as indicated by the numeral 13,V and the said inclined edge is disposed at an opposite angle to the inclined edge 14 of the head between the straight outer portion thereof and the jaw 2. The shank 13 has its outer portion widened and rounded, as at 14 and the outer edge of the portion 14 is provided with teeth 15. The inner straight edge of the movablev jaw 11 rests on the outer straight edge of the head 3. The shank 12 is received in the groove 4, and the enlarged cross sectionally rounded end or head portion 14 of the shank is received in the rounded portion 5 in the head 3. The teeth 15 on the cross sectionally rounded head 14 are disposed at an angle to coengage with the angle teeth.
The cross sectionally rounded portion 14 of the shank 13 has a longitudinal groove 1b. Passing through' a threaded opening in. the head 3 and entering the groove is a small bolt or screw 17. By this arrange-ment, it will be seen that the jaw 11 cannot be accidentally moved otl ol the head In operation, the threads of the nut are brought away from engagement with the threads on the shank of the movable jaw so that the movable jaw can be manually adjusted with respect to the stationary jaw to engage an article between the aws. When in such position, the nut is in contact with the wall of the opening 6 farthest away from the aw 2, or nearest what I have termed the outer edge of the head 3. The nut is then turned so thatits threads or teeth are brought into engagement with the threads or teeth on the shank of the movable j aw, the turning of the nut causing the same to be moved longitudinally on the screw or bolt and consequently advancing the movable jaw in the direction of the stationary jaw to more effectively grip the article engaged between the jaws. A reverse movement of the nut Will move the movable jaw away from the stationary jaw to release the article.
It Will Jfurther be apparent that the nut L9 is held from longitudinal movement on therefrom and being provided with a groove having a recess connminicating therewith adjacent one end, a. movable jaw associated with theA fixed jaw, a` rack bar 'formed on said movable jaw and sldabl)T mounted within said groove, means to limit the outward movement of said bar, said body being provided with a bore arranged on opposite sides of said recess, and the outer bore having a groove in the rear wall thereof, a screw member passing "through said recess and having a non-threaded portion received in the outer bore, a bit projecting from the non-threaded portion and being disposed in the groove of the outer bore to prevent ro tation of said screw member, a nut eccentrically mounted upon the screw threads of the screw member and a non-headed screw threadedly mounted in the outer bore and engaging the bottom of the screw member for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa ture.
SHINICHI NISHIMURA.
