Be it known that I, ToNY ZUKowsKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple renches, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide a multiple wrench by means of which two objects lying mutually adjacent may be grasped therein and turned or otherwise manipulated as desired.
Another object is to accomplish the above by novel and practical means, and to provide additional means for assuring a secure contact between the wrench jaws and the object grasped thereloetween.
The above and otherobjects will become apparent in the description below, in which like characters of reference refer to likenamed parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the main frame of my wrench, having a stem or shank 2 slidably mounted therein on one side, and another stem or shank 3 slidably mounted on the other side. The .usual screw threads 4: and 11, respectively, are provided on said shanks, and nut- like sleeves 9 and 18, respectively, serve to raise or lower said shanks with respect to said frame. A jaw 5, having its lower edge plane 17 and horizontal and its upper edge 7 serrated and horizontal over a part of its extent, an in clined surface 6 extending over the remainder of the extent' of said upper surface, is rigid with the upper end of said stem. The upper-left-hand edge (Fig. 1) of saidjaw is rounded at 8, for a purpose which will presently become apparent.
The shank 3 is of shorter length than the shank 2, its lowermost point being shown at 10. The latter is provided with a jaw 12 having its underside horizontal and serrated at 15. The point at which the jaw 12 joins the shank 3 is rounded at 14, and a rounded hump 13 is provided at a short distane from the jaw 15 on the stem 3.
A spring 16 of the curvature shown extends from the frame 1 and presses against the shank 3, urging the latter toward the right (Fig. 1).
The lower portion or side of the jaw 5 is preferablyto be used for grasping flat-faced objects, such as nuts, while the upper side is preferably used for grasping cylindrical or round objects, such as pipes. In the case of the latter, it is apparent that, after a pipe has been placed between the aws 5 and 12, the spring 16 will have forced the jaw 12 toward the right. Upon tightening of the said jaws about the pipe, the rounded edge 8 will contact with the hump 13, thus causing the jaw 12 to move toward the left against the force of the spring 16. Thereby the serrations of the jaws 5 and 12 will be urged to cut or bite into the surface of the pipe, thus assuring a secure and tight grip. The position of the hump 13 may be other than that which I have shown, depending upon the size of the wrench and upon the size of pipe for which it is to be adapted.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of threaded stems slidable therein, one of said stems beingprovided with a jaw having its lower edge flat and its upper edge serrated, the other of said stems having a serrated jaw adapted to coact with said firstnamed serrated jaw, a spring normally urging one of said stems toward the other, there being a hump on the side of one of said stems adapted to contact with the edge of said jaw on the other of said stems when said jaws are tightened.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of threaded stems vided with a aw having one of its faces flat and the other serrated, the other of said stems being provided with an additional jaw slidable therein, one of said stems being pro- 7 said stems adapted to contact with the edge of said jaw on the other of said stems when said jaws are tightened.
3. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of threaded stems slidable therein, one of said stems. being provided with a jaw having its lower edgeflat and its upper edge serrated, the other of said stems havinga serrated aw adapted to co-act with said first-named serrated jaw, and means to cause relative lateral movement of one ofsaid serrated jaws when said serrated jaws are tightened.
