Description

A ril 3,1924; 1,489,964
' W. O.-POWERS BENCH VISE Filed Jan 2 1923 0. Powers" Patented Apr. 8, i924.
WILLIAM C. POWERS, F WARNER LAKE, OREGON.
BENGH VISE.
Application filed January 2, 1923. Serial No. 610,329.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM O. Pownns, acitizen of the United States, residing at Warner Lake, in the county of Lake and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to certain improvements in bench Vises and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of an open top, audit is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby one of the jaws of the vise may be moved relative to the second jaw.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved bench vise whereby certain important advantages are attained and the de vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is: a view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating a device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and. in applied position;
Figure 2 is a view partly in front elevation and partly in section of the device as illustrated in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view in top plan of the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw- 7 ings 1 denotes an elongated arm provided at one end portion with a jaw 2, the opposite end portion of said arm being reduced, as at 3, to provide means whereby said arm may be effectively maintained in applied position with respect to a bench or other supporting structure. The arm 1 is disposed through an opening 4 in a block 5, said block 5 connecting a plate 6 and a brace frame 7. The plate 6 rests upon the top of the bench or other structure and is adapted to be suitably anchored thereto.
The arm 1 in a face thereof is provided with a transversely disposed recess or groove 8 adapted to register with an opening 9 disposed through the block 5 and insertible through the opening 9 and: theregistering groove or recess 8 is a tapered pin 10 whereby the block 5 and the arm 1 are elfectively locked in a fixed relative arrangement.
The arm 1 at a suitable distance below the block 5 has secured to opposite faces thereof the outstanding plates 11 between which extends and is pivotally engaged, as at 12 an end portion of the arm 14. The arm 14 is of a length to extend through the frame 7 and the end'portion remote from the pivot 12 is provided with a jaw 15 which coacts with the jaw 2 hereinbefore referred to.
Threaded through the frame 7 is an operating shank 16, the inner end portion of which is reduced, as at 17. The reduced portion 17 terminates in a ball 18 seating within a socket 19 provided in the arm 14, said ball 18 being retained in the socket 19 by the holding plate 20. Upon requisite turning movement of the shank 16, the arm 14 will be caused to swing toward or from the arm. 1 whereby the jaws 2 and 5 may be caused to have gripping action upon the desired work or released therefrom. The outer end portion of the shank 16 is provided with the operating member 21.
Extending laterally from the arm 14 and in opposite directions are the arms 22 terminating in the cross heads 23 positioned in close proximity to the sides of the frame 7. The arms 22 and the associated heads 23 00- act with the frame 7 to brace or reinforce the arm 14 and to assure the jaw '15 having proper coaction with the jaw 2.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a bench vise constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of th convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A vise comprising a bench plate and a frame carried thereby, an arm disposed through said plate, means for securing said plate and arm together, one end portion of the arm being provided with a jaw, a second arm pivotally engaged with the first named arm and extending through the frame, said second named arm being provided with a jawrfor ooaotion with the jaw of the first named arm, and mean carried by the frame and associated with the second named arm for moving said second named arm with respect to the first named arm.
2. A vise comprising a bench plate and a frame carried thereby, an arm disposed through said plate, means for securing said plate and arm together, one end portion of the arm being provided with a jaw, a second arm pivotally engaged with the first named arm and extending through the frame, said second named arm being provided with a jaw for coaction with the jaw of the first named arm, and means carried by the frame and associated with the second named arm for moving said second named arm with respect to the first named arm, said second named arm being provided with laterally directed arms terminating in cross heads eoacting with the frame.
3. A device comprising a block provided with an opening, an elongated arm disposed through the opening in the block, means for locking the arm to the bloelr, a brace frame extending outwardly from the block, a second arm disposed through the brace frame, means for pivotally engaging the second named arm with the first named arm, similar ends of both oi the arms being provided with coaeting jaws, and means moving the arms one with respect to the other.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
WILLIAM O. POWERS.
