UNITED STATES FRANK B. WERSEL, .13.,
OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DAVENPORT.
Application filed May 8, 1918.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK B. WnRsEL, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of @hio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce an improved davenport or daveno in which greater strength is attained than in other davenport or daveno constructions known to me.
A further object is to produce a daveno or davenport construction which is easier to operate than other daveno or davenport construction known to me.
These and other objects are attained in the construction disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a daveno or clavenport embodying my invention, one end.board having been removed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the construction disclosed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig 2, but showing the parts moved to bed position.
Fig. A is a fragmental front elevation of a detail of my improved construction.
My improved davenport consists of a frame comprising ends 5, a back 6 and a front board 7 a seat section 8, a back section 9, and an auxiliary section 10.
Secured to the end boards in suitable position are plates 11, the upper ends of which pivotally mount the seat section at its forward edge. At its rear edge the seat section is provided with plates 12 which are pivotally connected with plates 13 secured to the lower egde of the back. The lower ends of the plates 13 are provided with notches 1A for engagement with pins 15 extending from plates 12. Adjacent to their forward edges the sides of the seat section are pivotally connected with links 16 which are also pivotally connected with auxiliary section 10 adjacent to its forward edge. At the pivot point of link 16 with section 8 I pivotally connect a link 17 which at its lower end connects with a strut 18 which is moved thereby to section-supporting position as shown in Fig. 3.
Seat section 8 is provided with a front board 19 which is preferably placed flatwise as shown in Fig. 2. This board is supported at each end upon blocks 20, but is without Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1920. Serial No. 233,199.
support centrally. To support the board centrally when section 8 is in the settee position I have provided a strut 21 which is pivotally mounted between its ends upon front board 7 and which is adapted to be brought to its upright supporting position by a link 22 loosely pivotally connected to the lower end of the strut and to the front board 23 of the auxiliary section 10, when the sections are in settee position.
At the pivotal connections of the back and seat I have provided coil springs 24 which would normally assume a position intermediate those shown in Figs. 2 and 3 were it not for the attachment 26 of the back and seat respectively. Therefore when the spring is in either of the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it is under tension.
At the top of the back section I have provided a pillow board 27 which rests upon pins 28 in the back board, when the sections are insettee position as shown in Fig. 2, and which may be moved to pillow supporting position when the sections are moved to bed position as shown in Fig. 3. A strap 29 is provided for moving the sections from one position to another.
In the operation of my improved construction, the sections in being moved from the settee position to the bed position, cause strut 21 to be lowered to substantially a horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, because of the raising of link 22 which is attached to section 10. When the sections are moved to settee position auxiliary section 10 is lowered. This causes link 22 to bring strut 21 to a vertical position such as disclosed in full lines in Fig. 4, in which position the upper end of the strut bears against the under side of front board 19 of the seat section to support it between its ends. The purpose of bringing the strut to horizontal position when the sections are moved to bed position is to remove it from interference with the springs and mattress when the structure is used as a bed.
Spring 24: acts to cushion the movement of the seat and back sections to their fully folded positions as shown in Fig. 2, as well as to cushion movement of these sections to their fully extended or bed positions as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is;
A daveno consisting of a frame, including a front board, a series of three sections,
two of said sections being pivotally connected together and to the frame and adapted to permit the sections to be unfolded beyond the frame, for use as a bed, an additional section pivotally connected to one of said sections and adapted to be used as a portion of the bed when the two sections are moved to bed position, said first and second mentioned sections being adapted when folded to be used as a settee, a strut pivotally mounted on the front board between the ends thereof and adapted to be moved either to a substantially vertical or substantially horizontal position and a link FRANK B. WERSEL, JR.
