To all whom t may concern:
Be it known'that LCoLLrN TiroMrsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Okolona, inV the county ofChickasaw and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Railroad Ties and Rail F'asteners, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to railroad tie and rail fasteners therefor, and has particular reference to a device of this kind embodying a rail seat formed of a block of metallic material embedded in the upper surface of a concrete or other molded tie.
The primary object of the invention is toy provide a construction of the above kind, which embraces the desired qualities of simplicity, durability, and ei'iiciency in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rail seat block for composition rail way ties having simple and eiiicient means for securing a rail thereon.
A further object is to provide rail faster ing means capable of being easily and eX- peditiously adjusted to its operative position for holding a rail in place.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,` and the same consists in the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view illustrating a railroad tie, constructed in accordance with the present invention, and embodying a metallic rail seat block having rail fastening devices constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view, taken substantially upon the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the rail engaging elements, and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 of one of the wedges for operating the rail engaging element.
Referring more in detail to the drawings` 5 indicates a railroad tie that is `moulded from any suitable composition such as concrete, `with 'a rail seat forming block 6 em-y bedded, preferably by molding in, in the upper surface of each end portion thereof during the moulding thereof, so that the upper surface of each block is flush with the upper surface of the tie as shown clearly in Figure` 1. The block' is of 4general trapezoidalform in side elevation and has its sides flush with the sides of the tie as shown in Figure 2, suitable centrall ribs 7 being provided upony the inclined ends of the seat block 6, whereby sidewise-displacement of the same from the tie is prevented under ordinary conditions. f
The seat bloclr is provided with a pair of vertical openings 8 in which are slidably positioned the vertically movable rail engaging elements 9, said elements being in the form of elongated bars having inturned lips 10 upon the upper ends thereof to engage over theI opposite base flanges of the rail l1 that is disposed upon the upper surface of the block 6 and extends transversely of the latter. As shown in Figure 2, the vertical openings `8 are provided in the block 6 in such manner as to position the rail engaging elements 9 at diagonally related points with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rail 11. said rail engaging elements being thereby respectively located closer to one side o-f the block 6 than to the other whereby staggered contact is had with the base flanges of the rail.
The block 6 is provided with a pair of horizontal transverse openings 12, each of which intersects one of the vertical openings 8, and slidable in the transverse opening 12 are wedge elements 13 that are movable transversely of the tie and in tapered notches 14 provided in the inner edges of the rail engaging element 9.
It is thus apparent that when the base flanges of the rail 11 are engaged under the lips 10 of the rail engaging elements 9, the latter will be drawn downwardly to tightly fasten the rail upon the upper surface of the block 6 when the wedges 13 are shifted transversely of the tie in one direction. For causing this shifting of the wedges 13, the latter are provided with screw threaded stems 15 upon one end with respect to each of the same, and nuts 16 are threaded upon these stems in position to bear against washers 17 disposed on the stems 15 and against the adjacent side of the block 6. A second nutlS may be threaded upon each of the stems for locking the adjusting nuts 16 against shutting olf of the stems 15 after they have been tightly adjusted. It is also apparent that upon backing the nuts 18V and 16 0H of the stems l5 for a suicient distance, the rail engaging element` 9 will be loosened suiiciently to permit shifting of the rail 11 relative to the tie. By completely removing thernuts, the Wedges may be removed for permitting removal of the rail engaging elements 9, whereby the rail ll may be completely removed from the tie.l
A railroad tie constructed in' accorda-nce with the above Willbe of very simple and durable construction, and will be lighter in weight and cheaper to manufacture than solid metal ties, while presenting all of the durable qualities of the latter, by the provision of the metallic seat block 6 embedded therein. Also, the fastening means is simple, effective in action, and capable of being cheaply and easily manufactured as well as easily and expeditiously placed in use.
