RAILWAY TIE.

Be it known that I, ORAN YAnNnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Ties, of which the following is av specification.
My invention relates to railway ties, and has for its object to provide a light weightmetal tie having a rail cushion therein, and one which is simple in construction and quickly placed in position on the road bed.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this ap=plication and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings in which I have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the tie. Figure 2 is a perspective of one end portion of the tie with a short section of a rail thereon.
The present invention consists of a metal channel A, made of sheet metal bent to form a channel having a bottom 1 and sides 2. The bottom has portions thereof cut in V-shape and struck down to "form drain holes and soil engaging lugs 3. The sides have holes 4 punched therein, alinedv in pairs, to receive the bolts 5 which are carried in said holes and are the means I use tq hold the cushionblocks 6 in place and the sides 2 in vertical position and rigidly against said cushions. Nuts 7 are screwed on said bolts to hold the sides in place. Angle iron straps 8 are held on the upper face of said cushion blocks by the rail spikes being passed through holes therein,
and said straps 8 are also each secured on the adjacent bolt 5 by having portions slit and struck outwardly from the general plane of the strap to form a hole 9 through each strap through which the bolt 5 is passed.
In using my ties on a road bed, the channel A is placed in position and the lugs 3 are forced into the soil by striking the bottom of the channel which is the base of the lug with a. sledge. The cushion blocks may be made of wood or other fibrous material,
and are placed within said channel where the rail is to rest on the tie, and the bolts 5 are secured in place by turning up the nuts 7, the end bolts 5 being first passed through the hole 9 ineach of said strap-s8. The straps 8 are held contiguous the base of the rail by the engagement with bolts 5 and the rail spikes when driven into the cushion blocks contiguous.
Having thus described my tie and its use I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 7 In a railway tie the combination of a channel made from sheet metal having portions struck from the general plane to form drain ports and soil engaging lugs; a cushion block in each end portion of said channel; angle straps bent to fit the upper faceand end of each cushion block; bolts passed through the sides of said channel and said straps adjacent the ends of said cushion blocks to hold said blocks in place; and nuts screwed on said bolts to draw the sides of said channel against said blocks.
