' Application filed May 24,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FREDERICK- BULL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve-- ments in Casesor Containers for Tobacco Cartridges, of which the following is aspeo ification. w w
This invention relates to cases or.contanr ers for tobacco cartridges, and of that type which are provided with a hinged or detachable lid or cover and which are combined with a charging plunger for introducing the cartridge into the bowl of the pipe, the plunger being arranged to slide axially within a guide or guides carried by the lid or body part of the case or container and adapted to project from the latter at the junction of the said lid and body portion.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved and efficient means for securing the lid or cover of the case or container in its closed position.
The invention consists essentially in forming the plunger with a longitudinal slot which is adapted, when the lid of the case or container is closed and the plunger is moved axially, to engage a headed stud upon the said lid, or upon the body part where the plunger is carried by the lid, and thus retain the lid in its closed position. The slot is preferably formed with an enlarged portion to admit of the ready engagement of the stud with the slot, whilst the lid of the case or container is preferably spring-actu ated so that it automatically flies open on the plunger being moved to bring the said enlarged portion of the slot opposite to the stud upon the lid.
In order that the invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which Fig. l is a view with the case open to show the body portion thereof with the charging plunger drawn out,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lid portion with the retaining stud thereon,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 Fig. 1, the case, however, being closed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings a indicates the body port-ion of the case designed to contain the cartridges and b the lid portion, said parts a and 6 being connected together by means of springhinges c. Secured within the body portion 1922. Serial No. 563,288.
a. of the case is a holder a of substantially semi-circular cross-sectional outline and in which holder the cartridge is placed preparatory to the charging of the pipe.
The holder a is arranged transversely of the width of the case and at or substantially at the centre of its length, one end thereof lying within a semi-circular recess having an outwardly projecting lip (Z, and formed on the body of the case at the point where the parts a and Z) are hinged together, a similar recess, having a lip (1 being formed upon the lid Z), the two lips, when the lid is closed forming the walls of the opening through which the tobacco is forced into the pipe bowl. The opposite end of the holder is bent into tubular form as shown at e forming a guide for the plunger e by means of which plunger the tobacco is forced-out of its envelope into the pipe. The outer end of the tubular portion of the guide projects through the upper marginal wall of the body portion a and is secured in any suitable manner.
The plunger 6 is of tubular form, its outer end projecting somewhat beyond the case and being provided with a head 9 designed to permit its convenient manipulation. The inner end of the plunger is also provided with a head designed to act as a stop to limit the extent of the outward movement of the plunger. The head g may be of any suitable form but for convenience of assembling the plunger, in the present instance it comprises a disc of a diameter somewhat exceeding the diameter of the plunger itself. The disc is reduced in diameter to enable it to slightly enter the plum ger in which it is secured by a rod 9 screwed at one end to engage a threaded perforation in the disc, the upper end of the rod being secured to the aforesaid head g, the disc thus also serving to secure the said head 9 to the plunger.
Running longitudinally of the plunger 6 and formed upon the upper or outer slde'of said plunger is a slot it having at its inner or lower end an enlargement k designed, when the plunger is in its extreme outward position, on the opening or closing of the case to permit the passage of the head of a stud k The lid is secured in the closed position by the inward movement of the plunger 6 the body of the stud then entering the narrower portion of the slot h the head thereon preventing its withdrawal from the slot.
In order to prevent the rotation of the plunger within its guide inwardly turned lugs i are provided upon said guide which lugs engage the sides of the slot in the plunger and so prevent its rotary motion.
I claim:
1. In a case or container for tobacco cartridges having a cartridge holder and a tubular plunger for ejecting the tobacco therefrom, means for securing the lid or cover of the case or container in the closed position, comprising a headed pin or stud upon one member of the case or container a longitudinal slot in the plunger of such Width as to contain the body or the stud, and an enlargement in said slot designed to permit the passage of the head upon the closing of the case with the plunger in its outermost position and to secure the parts of said case against opening when the plunger is depressed.
2. In a case for tobacco cartridges having a holder for the cartridges, a tubular plunger for ejecting the tobacco from the holder and having a slot therein; a slot at anend of the holder serving as a guide slot for the plunger; and inwardly turned lugs on said guide slot engaging the sides of the slot of the plunger for preventing rotation of the plunger in said guide slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE FREDERICK BULL. Witnesses:
