star's VERTIGAL FILING CABINET.
Application filed January 16, 1922.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT 13. Panama, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Filing Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vertical filing cabinets, and an object is to provide a device of this character for filing drawings and prints or similar sheetlike articles, and which is so constructed and arranged that a drawing board may be associated with and used in cooperation therewith so that when a person wishes to use the drawing board, the latter will be supported in proper position by the cabinet and when the drawing board is not in use, it may be placed inside of the cabinet so as to be out of the way and ready for use at any subsequent time. Another object is to provide a cabinet having a door horizontally hinged toward the bottom thereof and which, when open, swings into the proper position to form a front support for the drawing board which will be supported thereby with the proper degree of inclination for working upon by a draftsman. Another object is to provide the hinged door with means for supporting the drawing board when not in use inside of the cabinet. Another object is to provide the hinged door with additional means which will support rolls of paper and cloth and a T-square in such manner as not to interfere with the filing of flat articles in the cabinet.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the operation of my invention,Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section showing the cabinet in closed condition. Fig. 4 is a view in section similar to that of Fig. 3 but showing the cabinet in its open position. Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in vertical section taken near the front of the cabinet.
As shown in the drawings, I provide a box like structure having two sides 10 and 12, a back It, and a bottom 16, all of which Serial No. 529,458.
are secured together and fixed with relation to each other. As shown in Fig. 5, the side members are provided with panels- 18 and 20. A cover 22 is hinged to the upper end of the back, and a door 24: which constitutes the front portion of the cabinet is horizontally hinged to a part 26 located at the front portion of the cabinet. This door may have a panel 27 as shown in Fig. 5. The sides of the door 2 1 are connected with the sides of the cabinet by pairs of jointed links 28 which serve as stops when the door is opened, as shown in Fig. f and which fold up inside the cabinet when the door is closed as shown in Fig. 3. Secured within the sides 10 and 12 toward the upper ends thereof are horizontal strips 30 and 32 which serve to support a cross bar 34: which holds the upper ends of vertical separators36 in place. These separators are for the purpose of filing flat articles such as tracings and prints. Secured to the inside of the door 24: are a plurality of pairs of rack hooks 38 for the purpose of holding rolls 39 of paper and cloth. Se-
cured to the bottom of the door are a pair of hooklike supports 40 which extend farther into the cabinet than the hooks 38 and constitute a support for a drawing board 42 having cleats 44 at its ends. When the door is open, the drawing board may be removed and supported upon the top thereof and upon the cover 22. The cleats 4A are of the proper length to wedge between the door and the cover and prevent the drawing board from sliding sidewise and the cabinet is so proportioned that opening of the door to the position permitted by the stops 28- causes its upper end to swing down the requisite distance to give the drawing board the proper slant for use. The upper edges of the side members may have pins 45 anchored therein which are received 1n recesses in the lower side of the cover 24 so that the I claim:
In combination with a vertical filing cabinet, a door horizontally hinged to the front lower portion thereof, stops for limiting the outward movement of said door, a cover hinged to the top and rear portion of the cabinet, horizontal strips secured to the inner surfaces of the side members of the cabinet near the upper end thereof, a cross- 2; drawing board will be securely hold in inclined position by the Wedging action of said cleats between said door and said cover, supports extending inwardly from the lower end of said door for supporting the drawing board for storing the same, said supports having inner upturned ends which retain the lower end of the drawing board, and vertical separators in the cabinet, the upper portion of the drawing board when the latter is stored,-engaging said cross-bar to hold the latter against said separators.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
