Be it known that MAX GOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification. n
rlhis invention relates to locks. Among the objects of the invention is to provide a practical lock of the character described which shall be durable and simple in construction, efficient in operation, and burglar-proof to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in 'part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations ofelements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

YReferring in detail to the drawings,vthc lock 1() embodying my invention there illustrated is shown applied to a door 11 and a door frame 12. 13 indicates a face plate or attaching member secured to the door in any suitable manner as by means of screws 14 on which are mounted some of the parts of the lock mechanism. The lock mechanism is assembled in a recess 14a cut out in the door and covered by said face plate as will be readily understood.
The keeper for the lock comprisesy a portion fixed to the door frame and a portion movable with the door. The iXed or stationary portion of the keeper comprises a keeper plate 39 which is counter-sunk into the door frame and secured thereto in any suitable manner as by means ot the screws 3 y19252. Serial No. 598,795.

Extending from this keeper plate 39 is a keeper block 41 adapted to enter into a space 42 between the keeper blocks 43, 44, secured or forming part of the face plate 13. lThese members 43, 44 form the movable portion ott the keeper. In the form shown in the drawings, lthe keeper block 41 is of dove-tail shape and dove-tails into the correspondingly shaped space or recess 42 between tlie keeper blocks 43, 44, the three blocks 41, 43, and 44 combining with thedoor when closed to form a strong keeper 'for the lock bolt 15. The latter is .adapted to engage with said `blocks through openings 41',
43, 44 respectively, provided therein and adapted to register with each other so as to form one continuous recess for receiving the lock bolt. y
The lock mechanism is assembled in the recess 14a formed in the door and comprises a lock bolt 15 formed with a yrack 16 adapted to be engaged by a toothed segment 17 for reciprocating the lock bolt. The segment 17 is mounted on a shaft 18 extending `through the opening in the door and havino' mounted on each end thereof the usual `interior and exterior door knobs 19, 20 respectively. Disposed adjacent the upper end of the look bolt is a catch member 21 adapted to .be reciprocated in guides 22, 22 secured kon the interior or forming part of the casing. This catch member k21 is preferably U-shaped so as to provide a cross piece 23 adapted to rest in one position on the upper end of the lock bolt 15 so as to keep the bolt in locking position. Extending ironisaid cross member 23 are the parallel leg members 24, 25 defining the U-shaped opening 26. As will be understood, when this catch member is moved into position with the U-shaped opening disposed over the lock bolt, the latter is free to be reciprooated therethrough. A spring 27 secured to the casing as at 2S normally maintains the catch-member in locking position with the cross-member 23 disposed over the lock bolt 15. Means is provided for releasing the lock bolt either from the interior or eX- terior of the door. To'this end'the leg member 24 adjacent the kinterior of the door is provided with a lug or extension 29 adapted to be engaged by a linger member 30, extending from the shank 31 of a knob or button 32 operable from the interior. Likewise, eX- tending from the other leg 25 is a lug member 33 adapted to be engaged by a finger member 34 extending from a shank 35, adapted to be operated by the key inserted in the usual key barrel mechanism shown generally at 38. rlhe shaft 18 has an opening 37 formed therein to permit the projection of the finger member therethrough.
The operation oic the lock Will now be clear llVhen the door is closed, the dovetail member l1 registers in the space 42 between the keeper blocks 43, all. The knob 20 is then manipulated so as to operate the segment 17 thus moving the lock bolt into the continuous opening in the keeper blocks formed by the registry of openings all', 13, Aand 143 with each other. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) 1When the lock bolt has been thus Yfully drawn into the keeper blocks, the catch member 21 Will be urged by the spring 27 into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 with the cross member 23 resting on the top of the lock bolt and thus keeping it in locked position. It it is now desired to open the lock irom either the interior or exterior of the door, the button member 32 or the linger member 34, as the case may be, is operated to slide the catch member in its guides 22 against the spring 2T until the U-shaped opening 26 is disposed over the lock bolt and then either the interior knob 19 or exterior knob 20 turned so as to operate the segment 17 and Withdraw the lock bar. In the Withdrawn position, the lock bolt abuts against the spring 4:5 Which extends from the casing so as to keep the lock bar partially in registry With the keeper blocks. ln this Way, unless complete turning of the segment is had, the door Will always be somewhat locked.
lt Will thus be seen that thereis provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be iimderstood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A lock comprising a movable 4portion and a Wedge-shaped keeper, said movable portion having a Wedge-shaped opening for receiving said keeper, a lock bolt for retaining said portions in engagement, and means messes means :tor reciprocating said lock bolt inV the vertical openings. A lock comprising a casing, a toothed lock bolt Within said casing, means for reciprocating said lock bolt, said means comprising a shaft operable by the door knob, a pinion mountedthereon adapted to engage With the teeth of said lock bolt, and means for maintaining said lock bolt in closed position, said means comprising a spring pressed reciprocatory member formed With spaced leg portions and a solid end portion, the latter being adapted to rest on the lock bolt and prevent the latter from being raised, and means for reciprocating said spring pressed member.

A lock comprising a casing, a toothed lock bolt Within said casing, meansV `for reciprocating said lock bolt, said means comprising a shaft operable by the door knob, a pinion mounted thereon adapted to engage with the teeth of said lock bolt, and means for maintaining said lock bolt in closed position, said means comprising a spring pressed reciprocatory member formed with spaced leg portions and a solid end portion, the latter being adapted to rest on the lock bolt and prevent the latter from being raised, and means for reciprocating said spring pressed member, said means comprising a lug member extending from the free end or" one of said'leg members, and an actuating member adapted to engage said lug member.
