'R ferring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a fragmentary portion of a door frame having formed therein the usual latch housing 6 and bolt housing 7, the front walls of these housings being protected by the usual guard plate 8 secured thereto by any suitable fastening means 9, such as screws or the like.

Arranged within the recess 11 adjacent the rear wall is a drum 14 and the ends of this drum are journaled on the op osite side wall of the recess, as illustrated in Fig. 2-
A knob shaft. 15 is secured in the drum 1a and the ends of this shaft project laterally beyond the outer faces of the sidewalls of the recess and have secured thereto the operating knobs 16.
A pin or shaft 17 is secured to the opposing faces of the side walls of the recess and adjacent the drum Li and this pin has pivoted thereon a locking bar 18, the rear end of which is provided in its under side with an inverted V-shaped notch 19. the rear wall of which is beveled as at 20. The notch 19 of the bar 18 is adapted to receive the beveled lug 21 formed on the drum 14: and this lug tends to hold the latch in operative or locked position. By virtue of the shaft 17 being located, near the center of the bar 18, the said bar will. be normally-disposed in a horizontal position and the latch 22 in locked position.
The-latch 22 has the usual beveled face to he slid into and out of the recess 6 and the door frame 5. This latch is slidable in the housing 24 formed on the plate 8. r
A second shaft 25 is journaled in the opposing side walls of the recess 11 forwardly of the shaft or rod 17 and this shaft 25-has secured thereon a gear wheel 26 which meshes with the teeth 27 of the rack bar 28, the forward end of this rack bar being pivotally secured as at 29 to the lugs 30 carried by the rear face of the latch 22. The forward portion of the rack bar is slidable through a guide 31 extending yertically from the bottom wall of the housing 24.

It will be understood that when the latch is in the extended position the keeper 39 of the retaining member is within the recess of the latch and the headed end -l-2 of the rod 43 abuts the upper wall of the slot 41. IVhen the parts are in this position, the lug 21 of the drum is in the recess 19 of the bar and a chain 33 is partially wound about its sprocket wheel 35. Immediately upon the turning of the shaft 15 by pressure on the kin-b 16, the lug 21 due to its inclined-face riding over the lnclined wall 20 of the recess 19 will urge the rear end of the bar 18 upwardly moving the headed end of the rod 4:3 downwardly in the slot :1, thus swinging the retaining member on its pivot pin 38 and releasing the keeper 39 from the recess in the latch. By further turning movement of the shaft 15, the latch will be retracted by virtue of the chain 33 winding upon the drum 141 and the gear 26 retracting the rack bar, thus moving the latch free of its housing 6 and compressing the spring Immediately upon the release of pressure on the knobs the spring 32 will act to cause the latch to seat its extended position.

Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim is 1. 111 combination, a door havin a recess opening out through one wall t iereof a latch mechanism located within said recess and comprising a knob shaft. a drum journaled in the side wall of the recess and secured to the shaft, a locking bar pivoted to the side wall of the recess above said drum, a latch slidable in the recess ofthe door, a rack bar carried by the latch, means located what within the recess 'and connected to the drumv and rack bar whereby uponturning of the drum the latch may be retracted or extended, spring means associated with the rack bar and latch for automatically retaining the latch to extended position, and a retaining means operated by the lock ment with the latch to hold the same extended until the drum rotated, and a looking me-ans'to hold said drum against'rotation.
