Application filed November 29, 1922. Serial No. %,118.
To all iv/10m. it may concern:
Be it known that I, NINU Maennssnre, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at ((hristiania, Norway, hare invented certain new and useful Improvements in theh'lanufacture of Fireproof and Waterproof lVooden Building Plates; and I doihereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the 8.600111 panying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of fireproof a (1 waterproof wooden building plates 1 sections.
According to my invention I imbed wooden boards in a fireproof elastic material capable of resisting the action of water and which hardens to a stone-hard mass, which is also able to interconnect the boards without the use of any other mean; of connection to form an integralbuilding plate, absolutely free from cracks.
In the following the invention shall be explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a part of a building plate according to the invention in perspective view with parts broken away. i
The material used for the'purpose' referred to is a mass, the principal ingredients of which are watergiass and asbestos.
l I ma for instance use a mass according to my S. Patent No. 1,074,511, consisting of asbestos and carbonate of lime mixed with waterglass, containing an excess of alkali and a substance acting as an acid upon the silicate. This mass 1 I appl to the boards 2, laid side by side in the w ole width of the plate, whereby the mass may be pressed into the interstices between the individual boards, the edges of which may be square as shown or provided with grooves and feathers in the usual way.
The mass is preferably applied to the boards forming'the base by passing these, lying side by side, between a pair of rollers, the mass being simultaneously applied to both sides of the boards so as to be pressed about the boards by the rollers, In some cases I may previously roll the mass into thin plates, which are then applied to both sides of the loosely dSSSIIllDlEClbOttEdS,
so as to completely cncase the wooden plates thus formed If desired, the surface of the building plates thus produced may be strewn with sand or other mineral particles of any de sired colour and grain, said particles being pressed into the surface of the mass while this is still soft. Hereby the outer surface of the plates will give a good imitation-of sandstone, thereby improving the architectonic effect of the buildings in which they are used.
The building plates or sections described may be made in any lengths and widths desired. The boards may be. of a thickness of 9; of an inch to 1 inch or more, and the layers of the fireproof material may he of a thickness from inch and upwards according to requirements.
The plates are free from cracks, the boards imbedded therein being free to shrink indivil'lually without cracking the coating, as would be the case it the boards were interconnected beforehand to a rigid frame.
The plates may be nailed without cracking the coating, and they may be sawed, milled,
painted and papered just as ordinary wooden plates,
1. A process of manufacturing;- fireproof and waterproof wooden plates 01 sections, consisting in placing wooden. boards loosely side by side and interconnecting them by applying to the plate thus loosely formed a hardening mass, having as its principal ingredients waterglass and asbestos, and pressing said mass against said plate of boards so as to coat the same with a thin layer of the mass.
2, A process of manufacturing fireproof and waterproof wooden plates or sections, consisting in placing wooden boards side by side and interconnecting them by applying to both sides of the plates thus loosely formed layers of a hardening elas tic mass, having as its principal ingredi ents waterglass and asbestos, and pressing said layers against said boards so as to cover said boards, and to force part of the no es in between the individual boards.
ii. A process of manufacturing fireproof and waterproof wooden plates or sections,
consisting in placing wooden boards side by side and interconnecting them by applying to both sides of the plates thus loosely'formed layers of cover said boards,.and to force part of the mass in between the individual boards, subsequently applying mineral particles to the surface of said plate whi e the mass is still soft.
4. A fireproof and waterproofwooden building plate, comprising spaced boards n presence of two subscribin disposed side by side, and means .coverin and uniting said boards and consisting an elastic mass, the princi a1 ingredients of which are waterglass and asbestos. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name witnesses.
N IN 0 MA ELSSEN. Witnesses:
EDWARD JOHNSON, DAGNY SZVERSEN.
