SAMUEL H. DADDOW, OF ST. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPROVEMENT IN SQUlBS-FOR BLASTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patentlifb. 148,674. dated March 17,1874; application filed J anuaiy 20, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HARRIES DAD- DOW, of St. Clair, county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Blastingfiquibs and Fuses, of'wlrrch the folmwing is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in an improvement upon my invention for which Letters Patent No. 134,128 were granted to me December-24, 1872, and No. 143,396, granted to me September 30, 1873, for the construction of a match to be used with miners squibs and fuses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the various figures represent different kinds of matches, all embodying my invention.
The match is composed of a paper tube, A, and in Figure 1 I have shown severals strands, a, of slow-match inserted in the same. The portion containing the match proper is twisted.
In order to obtain a variation in the time of burning, this portion is either untwisted or twisted tighter at the time of use, at pleasure.
Fig. 2 shows the paper tube A without any slow-match, but twisted and dipped in a solution of niter, liquid sulphur, paraffine, or other combustible material, to make it more inflammable, Fig. 3 shows the tube Aw'ith one end, b,
coated in ,a friction compound, and the other end I) is left open for the insertion of the squib or fuse. Figs. 4 and 5 show the tube flattened to reeeive a; fiatsquib;
In Fig. 6 I have shown a fine piece ,of wire, d, inserted in the tube with prepared cotton or other inflammable material. This wire is for the purpose of fasteningthe match to the squib, and for the purpose, upon being bent, of elevating or depressing the match, and thereby controlling the rapidity of its consumption.
A portion of the hollow tube A in each case ifs left open for the insertion of the squib or use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- v The hollow match A, having one end open for the insertion of the squib or fuse, in combination with the slow-match a and wire d, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 17th day of January, 1874.
SAMUEL HARRIES DADDOW.
