Description
PATENTBD SEPT. 25, 41906.
M. T. WHITNEY.
RODEN'I" EXTERMINATOR.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14, 1905.
THE NcRRls PETER; cm, wAsHzNcroN, n. c,
UNITED STATESY PATENT OFFICE.
RODENTEXTERNHNATOR.
.To aJ/Z- whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION T. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and Stateof Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rodent-Exterminators g and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved rodent-exterminator for exterminatin moles, gophers, and other burrowi'ng animaIs, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved rodent-exterminator, showing the same in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig'S is a transverse sectional view of the same.
My improved rodent-exterminator is a torpedo to be exploded underground in the bur row of the animals for the purpose of emitting noxious gases and of forcing such gases, together with smoke, through the various ramifications of the burrows for the purpose of destroying the animals therein.
My improved torpedo or exterminator consists of a paper or other suitable wrapper 1, which is rolled upon itself to form spiral convolutio'ns which extend from end to end thereof, the spaces between the convolutions being filled with an explosive powder com posed of sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter in such proportions as will make a dense smoke and will explode with force enough to drive the smoke and gases through the various ramifications of the burrow or burrows.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 14,1905. Serial No. 278,506.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
In making the torpedo or exterminator the powder is placed on the wrapper and the latter is then rolled to form the coils with the powder between them. In the center of the torpedo, at one end thereof, is placed a suitable fuse b. The ends of the torpedo are closed and secured by suitable bands 3, which are here shown as made of cord.
In using the exterminating-torpedo the fuse of the same is ignited and the torpedo is placed in the burrow, the entrance of which is then closed with earth, which is tamped. When the torpedo explodes, the smoke and gases are driven by the force of the explosion entirely through the burrow and serve to kill the animals therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rodent-exterminating torpedo comprising a wrapper having an explosive compound arranged thereon and within its opposite ends, said wrapper with its compound being rolled to form spiral convolutions, the opposite free ends of the Wrapper projecting outwardly from the torpedo, a fuse extending centrally and part way into one end of the torpedo, and detachable bands arranged between said free extended ends and ends of the torpedo to retain the compound within the wrapper, and one of said bands also servin@ to hold the fuse within the torpedo.
n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
