PANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
FOLDING PAPER GAR-TON.
Application filed September 20, 1920. Serial No. 411,458.
To all whom it may comem:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county ofCook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Paper Cartons, of which I .do declare the followin .to be a full, clear, and exact description, re erence being had to" the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this. specification.
The present invention hasrelation more particularly to that type of folding paper cartons designed to serve not only as a means for 'inclosing articles for; shipment therein, but also as a means for attractively displaying said articles to prospective purchasers.
The invention'consists in the features of novelty hereinafterdescribed, illustrated in 'the accompanying drawings and partlcularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is'a plan view of a blank. from which. the carton will be made. Figure 2 is a fractional perspective view of the partially 'folded carton looking from the interior towards the end of the same. Figure 3 is a perspective view of one end of the carton with parts partially folded, the cover panels being omitted. Figure 4 is a perspective View similar to Fig. 3 but withthe display panel and its end flaps .in folded position. Figure 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of theicarton with the cover panels in folded position.
My improved carton is preferably 'made of cardboard or like material ordinarily used for cartons of this general character. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a sheet or blank from which the carton will be made is shown as cut and scored, as illustrated most clearly in Fig.1 of the drawings. A and A designate, respectively, panels that will form the main-longitudinal side .walls of the carton; B .designates the panel that will constitute the bottom of the carton and C designates the panel that will constitute the top of the carton, when these parts are in folded o'sition. The panels A and A are provide attheir ends with the flaps a and a, respectively, these flaps having truncated portions as shown; the panel B is provided at its ends with the flaps 6 formed with locking extensions or ton ues b, notches I)? being preferably forme at the junction of the extensions 1) with the flaps b. The panel C is provided at its ends with the flaps 0, these fiaps being shown as formed. with. intersecting slits a and 0 whereby thetongues are formed on the flaps 0. The panel C is formed with a series of openings that are suitably shaped to receive articles to be carried and displayed by the carton, such as tubes of tooth paste,
mucilage, tire cement or the like, that will. 7
extensions or tongues cl and notches (Z and.
the end flaps d are slitted, as at d to form the locking tongues d. The corners of the end flaps d opposite the locking extensions 03. are preferably rounded as shown at d.
The panel I) is connected with panels E and F, a line of slits ,or perforations 6 being preferably formed between the panels D and E to permit the panels E and F to be readily severed, if desired, after the carton has reached the retailer and the articles inclosed' therein are to be displayed for sale. The panel E is formed with the end flange e andthe'panel F is formed with the end flaps f having tongues f at their ends.
The folding 'of the blank shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings to form the finished carton may be effected as follows: The end flaps a being turned upward at right angles to the panel A, this panel A will be turned to approximately vertical position (see Fig. 2), a terwhich the end flaps 0 of the panel C will be turned vertically and thetongues a of the 'end flaps 0 bein forced slightly inward, the end flaps a W1 1 be passed between the tongues '0 and the end flaps 0. The end flaps a of the panel A will then be turned upward and the panelA' ma be swung to vertical position until its on flaps a pass between the inner face of the u turned end flaps c and the end flaps a. panel B 'will then beturned downward onto the upturned end flaps a, a and c, and the end flaps b of the panel B will be folded 1nward and the tongues or extensions 6' of the end flaps b will be passed into the lon i-. tudinal slits c in the end flaps o of t e panel C (see Fig. 3).
When the parts have been thus far folded, the panel C will be upon the bottom; but the carton will then be turned over bringing the panel C uppermost, as shown in Fig. 3. The panel D will then be turned to vertical position and its end flaps all turned inwardly, the tongues or extensions 01' of the end flaps d being passed between the end flaps b and 0 (see Fig. 4). The panel Dis of. much greater width than the side panels A and A, so that when the parts are in the folded position last described, aconsiderable part of the upperportion of the panel D will be exposed and will form a surface whereon advertising matter ma be printed.
The panel E wil then be turned downward, its end flaps being passed inside the end flaps d of the panel D and between the end flaps d and theplreviously folded end flaps b and 0, after w ich the panel F will be turned to vertical position (see Fig. 5) and its end flaps f will be turned inward-and their tongues f will be passed into the slits d of the end flaps d of the panel D. When the parts are thus folded, the tubes of paste, mucilage or the like will be securely inclosed and the package will be ready for shipment.
When the articles contained within the package are to be displayed, the tongues f will be withdrawn from the slits d, the pan els E and F will be unfolded and will be severed from the panel D along the perforated line e between the panels and E, thus leaving the carton in the condition shown in Fi 4 of the drawings.
aving thus described my invention, what he bottom memes I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y .1. A carton of the character described, comprising a lurality of integral longitudinal panel an end flaps adapted to form the body of the carton, said sheet being providedwith a dis lay panel adapted to extend to a distance a ve the body of the carton, and
having end flaps interlocking with'the end flaps of the carton body, the top of said display pane having connected thereto two additional panels one of which extends over the body of the carton and the other of which extends downwardly adjacent the front wall of the carton body and-has end' flaps .interlocking with. the aforesaid end flaps of the display panel, and a line of perforations extending between the top of said display panel and said additional panels to permit the latter to be readily torn away.
2. In a carton of the class described, the
tion extending over the top of the shell, and
the third panel of said section being extended downwardly along the front wall of the shell and having a flap at each end interlocked with the corresponding end flap of the first mentioned panel of the latter section.
' 3. In a carton of the character described, the combination of a container section, a cover hinged to the container section and having top, front and rear panels, a flap at a each end of the rear panel interlocking with the end walls. of the container sectiomand a flap on each end of the front panel interlocked with the corresponding end flap of the rear panel.
