The invention relates to cooling fans for internal combustion engines and has for its object to provide a fan of this character, which is carried by a casing and is driven through the medium of gearing and a shaft y from the crank shaft thereby providing a positive drive and a cooling fan which may be easily applied to an engine, and removed therefrom if so desired during cold weather.

Secured to the sides of the casing l are casings 12, in bearings of which casings, a shaft 13 is rotatably mounted, on which shaft conventional form of fan 14 is secured. The chambers 15 of the casings 12 are in communication with the chamber of the casing 4 so that'lubricant which may be placed in the casing 4- may also fill the chain bore 15. The chambers 15 also form pockets for the reception of worm gears 16 and 17. The worm gear 16 being keyed or otherwise secured to the fan shaft 15 and meshing with the upper worm 10, carried by the shaft 6, while the worm gear 17 may be keyed or otherwise secured to the drive shaft 2 of the engine and in mesh with the lower worm 10 of the shaft 6.
it will be seen that as the shaft 2 rotates that the shaft 6 will also rotate for the reason that the worm gear 17 is in mesh with the worm 10 at the lower end of the shaft 6. Shaft 6 will cause the fan shaft 13 to rotate through the medium of the upper worm 10, which meshes with the worm gear 16-carried by the fan shaft, therefore it will be seen that a positive drive for the fan is provided which drive eliminates the use of the common fan belt now in use which becomes worn, slips and at times break. it will also be seen that to remove the fan from the engine it will only be necessary to disconnect the brackets 3, then remove the casing 12.
