a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city, county, and State of New York, and ARTHUR B. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in folding display boxes of the type wherein the telescoping cover and container portions cooperate with each other, the said portions being made of fibrous material such as pasteboard. Hitherto there has been some wastage of stock in stamping or cutting the blank or blanks which are subsequently bent to form the parts of the box. This waste or pieces left over in the sheet from which the blank or blanks are cut is usually useless for box making purposes, still it must be considered by the Inanu'facturer in computing costs with the result r that it affects the ultimate cost of the product.
Another item that heretofore affected the cost to produce these boxes has resided in the decorative printing on the exterior of the box.
Coming now to the present invention the general object thereof is first the provision olf-a folding display7 box, the` portions of which may be cut or stamped from a sheet of fibrous material, as pasteboard, without any appreciable wastage of stock, and which may be readily printed in one color in a siuf gie operation, and having a false bottom which may, with or without a display, be used with the box and readily inserted therein, and which may be printed in single and preferably several colors, without requiring handling` of the other parts Of the box. Y
To these ends the invention resides in the provision 0f a primary blank having the form of a parallelogram and constructed sok that when folded one face thereof will provide the entire outer surfaces of the cover and container portions of the box, and in the provision of secondary blank'for forming a false bottom separate and distinct from the other portions of the box and also constructed so as to have the form of a paral- Another object is to adapt the false bottom to provide one of the walls, and a lock for another wall or walls of the box.

T he blank a from which the cover and container portions .are formed `-is substantially a parallelograin in contour and herein shown as provided with an outer facey or surface, the texture of which is tine and suitable for taking a relatively high grade of printing as compared with the opposite face, which is shown uppermost in Figure l, i
and which is relatively coarse. In constructing the blank so that the finer surface thereof will be exposed and `constitute the entire outer face of the box when' the same is in display position, and also when folded, suitable slitting and hinging is provided so as to lay out'the blank into several sections. 0f these the section 5 comprises the base of the cover portion of the box, and is con* nected by crease hinges, 6, 6, to the section' 7, 7, which, when turned upwardly, and at right angles to section 5, as vie-wed in Figure l, will constitute the side walls of the cover portion, and thus expose on the eXterior of the cover that surface of the blank having the finer texture. The end walls 8 and 9 are connected by crease hinges 10, 10, to the opposite ends of section 5, and when turned upwardly the same surface is eX- posed as described in connection with the side walls 7, 7 The tabs or flaps. 11, 11 and 12, 12, connected by the crease hinges 13, 13, to the end walls 8 and 9 serve to connect the said end walls and side walls together when the cover Z) is in set-up position.
In the drawings we have shown sections 1a and 15 as being connected by crease hinges 1G, 16 to the sections '7, 7 of the side walls in order that the said sections 1-1, 15 may be turned over the inner faces of the sections 7, 7, when the saine are in set-up position, and thereby provide the open ended pockets for the reception of the tabs or iiaps 11 and 12 when these are bent inwardly, so as to align with the crease hinges 6 6. rilhe eX- tensions or ledges 17 and 17 connected by crease hinges 19, 19 to the section 141, 15 are adapted to be turned at right angles to the sections 14 and 15, and engage with rip-struck lugs 20, 2O arranged on the marginal portions of section 5, and thereby cooperate to provide a lock for the pockets to prevent accidental displacement of the side walls or disconnection of the end walls.
The section 21 constitutes the base or bot- -tom of the container portion c and the side walls 22 and 23 which are connected by crease hinges 21-, 2d to section 21, and also the end wall 25 which is connected to one end of section 21 by crease hinge 26 are bendable so that when the container portion is in set-up position the outer surface thereof will be similar to the outer surface previously described in connection with the cover portion b. rFhe tabs or flaps 27 and 28 are connected-by the crease hinges 29, 29 to the end wall 25, and are turnable into lalignment with the r`crease ,hinges 241', 211 when the end wall 25 is in set-up position. The sections 30 and 31 connected by crease hinges 32, 32- to the sections 22 and 23 ofthe side walls are adapted to be turned downwardly when the sections 22 and 23 are bent upwardly into set-upv position, and thereby cooperate with the said sections 22 and 23 to provide pockets for the reception of the tabs 27 and 2S when arranged as previouslyT described. The connection between the cover and container portions is suoli, in the action of opening the box as to require the operator to turn the cover until the same is inverted and disposed underneath the container section, in which position the container section is readily insertable into the cover and assumes an inclined position therein, and bears on one end of the cover, as shown in Figure 3.
In the embodiment shown the tongue 33 is connected by the crease hinge 3+1- to the end wall 9 and to any convenient portion of the cover portion, as for instance, the central portion of section 21, by crease hinge 35. The tongue results from the presence of a pair of converging slits 36 and 3T, which extend from the ends of the crease hinge 34 to the ends of the crease hinge 35, so that when the cover is lifted from the container a continued movement of the cover disposes the partsin the position shown in Figure 3, and finally the parts move to display position, as shown in F iO'ure 3.
It will be observed tiat the opening caused by the movement of the tongue from between the slit 36, 37 when the parts are in display position is closed by the body portion 3S of the false bottom D having the contour of a parallelogram and cut or stamped from a single sheet of fibrous material. The area of the portion 33 approximates that of the bottom 21 so as to nicely t within the container. It will be noted by reference to Figure 1 that the sections 30 and 31 of the container are provided with extensions 39 and 40, similar to the extensions 17 and 17 of the side walls 1li, 15. The crease hinges 411, 41, which connect the sections 39, 40 to the sections 30, 31, permit the said sections 39, 40 to be turned outwardly when the said sections 30, 31, are in set-up position soas to bear on the bottom 21. When the false bottom D is arranged as shown in the drawings, the sections 39 and 40 are interposed between the bottoms 0 and D so that false bottom D functions as a lock for the side walls. The flaps 42 and 13 connected by the crease hinges 14, 114: to the sections 30, 31 of y the container side walls are bendable inwardly when the said sections are in set-up position, and thus provide an end wall for the container opposite to the end wall 25. A pocket is provided for the tabs L1-2 and 43, which pocket also provides the outer and inner faces of said end wall, and theI sides thereof are made up of the sections 1/1 and 15 connected one to the other by the crease hinge 46, and to the portion 3S by the crease hinge a7. `When the portion 38 is disposed in the container c and the tabs l2 and -13 turned into alignment, the section dei is turned upwardly, and over the outer faces of the tabs, and the section 45 turned downwardly and over the inner faces of said tabs. To prevent disengagement of the parts of the end wall just described, a lool; is provided in the form of anextension 13 connected by a crease hinge Lt9 to the section 4:5 and an tip-struck lug 50 at one end of portion 38. Thus it will be seen that the false bottom functions as a lock for one or more of the walls of the container portion.
In display boxes of the type described, a display panel is usually provided to project upwardly from one end of the box,
and which may be folded thereinto when the box is closed. As shown in the drawings, such a panel may be provided When desired by the provision of the panel 51 which is connected by the crease hinge 52 to the section 53, and is connected by the crease hinge 54 to the yportion 38. lVith this construction section 53 forms a base for supporting panel 51 when arranged in display position, and upon which panel 51 may be turned doivnvardly and disposed over the interior of the container when the box is closed.
It is to be observed that the construction of the cover and container portions is such that the box is made from a `blank of a shape corresponding substantially tol a parallelogiam. Thus, by laying out on a sheet of pasteboai'd a plurality of blanks of a size necessary to make a box or container of desired size, this plurality of blanks can be so arranged as to get the maximum amount of useful material out of the same, Without Waste or with a minimum of Waste. The false bottom D is such that the cutting or stamping of these parts from a sheet of fibrous material such as pasteboard is accomplished by arranging a plurality of these paiallelograms on another sheet in such a Way as to get the maximum amount of useful material Without Waste or the minimum of Wastage.
The arrangement of the main or primary blanks each of substantially parallelograinmatic shape, on one sheet, and the similar arrangement of the secondary or false bottom blanks on another sheet provides for a maximum usefulness of the stock of ma.- terial.
It is to be further observed that the decorative printing usually applied to display boxes may be applied to the cover and the container portions of tlie structure of this invention in one operation. This arrangement of parallelogrammatic blanks next to each other is also permissible when the printing operation is carried out. y By arranging the main or primary blanks next to each other on a press, all these can be printed at once, and the greatest amount can be printed togetherl without any Waste space on the press. Similarly. with the false bottom. It is usual to print the cover and container portions of cartons of the class to Which this invention relates, in a single color and in instances Where a display panel is used to print the same in multicolor. The present construction readily lends itself to ettect the carrying out of this procedure With a minimum of cost; in that the parts are disconnected and each in the form of a parallelogram and each therefore. printablev Without re! quiring handling of both at the same time; the contour of each further permitting the ing press.

But Where the primary blanks are printed at once, and the secondary blanks are printed separately, much saving in the cost of printing results.
Although We have shown and described an. ideal form of the invention, it is to be understood that We are not to be limited to the construction shown and described iii connection with this application it beingl obvious that the deviceis susceptible of any modifications Within the scope of the appended claims.
1. A folding display box comprising a body and a cover adapted to telescope together in the closed position yof the box, said body having a section cut therefrom, said section having hinged connection both With the cover and with the body and adapted to connect such cover and body for relative swinging movement of the cover about the lovver forward end of said body Sliy formed from a single blank of fibrous material, certain sections of which constitute the ybases of the cover and container portions, and other sections of Which are bent upon themselves so that opposite Walls of one of said portions Will be made up of outer and inner sections, the inner of said sections being provided With lateral extensions bearing on the base of said portion,
and means comprising a'separate sheet ofk fibrousmaterial insertable into said portion for securing the said extensions against displacement.
3. A folding display box comprising telescopiiig cover and container portions, a iiex' ible connection between said portions permitting inversion of the cover portion and partial' insertion of the container portion into the cover portion, said portions being formed from a single blank of fibrous material, sections of which constitute bases of the cover and container portions and other sections of which are bent upon themselves so as to provide opposite Walls consisting of outer and inner sections, the inner of said sections being provided With lateral extensions bearing on the base of one of said portions, a separate sheet of fibrous material insertable into one of said portions and adapted for securing the said extensions therein against displacement, other sections of said blank constituting opposite walls of one of said portions and secured to the first-named walls.

A folding display box comprising telescoping cover and container portions, and a flexible connection between said portions permitting inversion of the cover portion and partial insertion of the container portion into the cover portion, said portions and connection being` formed from a single blank of fibrous material, one section of which constitutes the base of the cover, and other sections of which are bent upon themselves so as to provide opposite walls, said walls consisting of outer and inner sections, the inner of said sections being provided with lateral extensions, a separate sheet of fibrous material insertable into one of said portions, and bearing on the said extensions to prevent displacement of same, one end portion of said sheet being extendable upwardly from one end of said portion and constituting a displayvpanel.

A folding display box formed from a plurality of blanks of fibrous material each of which is substantially parallelogrammatic in contour, one of said blanks having a greater surface area than another and provided with intersecting transverse and longitudinal incisions cooperating to provide a container portion, .a cover portion, and a tongue or flexible connection between said portions, said tongue being connected at one end to the middle portion of the bottom of the container, so as to fold and thereby permit the cover and container portions to telescope in tbc closed position of the box, and further to permit inversion of the cover portion and superimposition thereon of the container portion in the display position of the box, said blank further having bendable marginal portions adapted to be connected one to the other and constitute the flanges of the said cover and container portions, one of the flanges of said cover being adapted to intercept one end of the container portion upon inversion of the cover and thereby support the container at an incline to the cover in the display position of the'box, another of said blanks being insertable into the container portion and adapted toprovide a false bottom therefor and a closure for the opening when the tongue is folded.

A folding display box formed from a plurality of blanks of fibrous material each of which is substantially parallelogrammatic in contour, one of said blanks having a greater surface area than another and provided with intersecting transverse and longitudinal incisions cooperating to provide a container portion, a cover portion, and a tongue or flexible connection between said portions, said tongue being connected at one end to the middle portion of the bottom of the container, so as to fold and thereby permit the cover and container portions to telescope in the closed position of the box, and further to permit inversion of the cover portion and superimposition thereon of the container portion in the display position of the box, said blank further having bendable marginal portions, one of the flanges of said cover being adapted to intercept one end of the container portion upon inversion of the cover in the display position of the box, another of said blanks being insertable into the container portion and adapted to provide a false bottom therefor and a closure for the opening when the tongue is folded, said last named blank having an extension at one end interlocked with one of the end flanges of the container and constituting a reinforcement therefor.

A folding display box comprising a body and a cover adapted to fit together in the closed position of the box and the box body adapted to fit in an inclined position within the cover in the display position of the box, said body having a section of its bottom wall cut out on lateral lines, said section hinging with respect to the remainder of the bottom wall and also hinging with the adjacent end Wall of said cover, said sect-ion adapted to rest against said remainder of the bottom wall of said body in the display position of the box, and a supplementary bottom secured in said box body and overlying said hinging section, said supplementary body having a display panel projecting upwardly from the rear portion thereof.
8. A folding display box comprising complementary body and cover sections adapted to fit together in the closed position of the box, said body adapted to be received in an inclined position within said cover in the display position of the box, said body having a section of its bottom wall cut out and having a hinged connection with the fixed part of the bottom wall and also a hinged connection with the upper edge of the adjacent end wall of the cover, said section adapted to Contact with and support the rear portion of the bottom wall of the body in the display position, tabs at the end of the box body overlying said section and a\ supplementary bottom for the body having wall sections bent therefrom and embracing said tabs, said wall sections being interlocked together upon the tabs.

A folding display box comprising a complementary cover" and box body adapted to telescope together in the closed position of the box, said body adapted to rest within the cover in an inclined position in the display position of said box, the bottom of the body having a section cut therefrom on two sides and having a crease hinged connection with the remainder of the bottom at its other' side and also having a creased hinged connection with the upper edge of the adjacent end wall of the cover, said section f being received against the overlying portions of the body bottom in which display position of the box, tabs upon the box body overlying said section, and a supplementary bottom fitted in said box body and having a display panel at one end and a pair of foldable double walls at its other end adapted to extend on opposite sides of the tabs,`
the end of said supplementary bottom adjacent the double walls being interlocked with said supplementary bottom.

A Jfolding display box, consisting of a blank of sheet material, foldable to provide a base portion, side walls having inner and outer sections', said inner sections provided with marginal flanges to extend upon the base portion and having flaps at one of their ends projecting inwardly towards each other, and an end wall at the opposite end of the base portion, said wall having flaps on its ends extending between the inner and outer sections of the respective side walls, and a false bottom insertable into the folded box and having a foldable portion adapted to coact with said inwardly extending flaps and overlying the marginal flanges on the side walls to retain the several parts of the box blank in proper relative folded positions.

A folding display'box consisting of telescoping cover and container portions formed from a single blank or sheet material, said blank including a freely movable tongue flexibly connecting the cover portion at one of its ends to the base of the container portion at a point intermediate of its ends and permitting the container kportion to 'be partially inserted within the ycover portion and supported by said tongue in a longitudinally inclined position, and ka false bottoml insertable within the container Lportion having a oldable part at one of its ends to constitute one end wall of the container portion and provided at its other end with a display panel foldable into substantially parallel relation to the base of said container portion when the latter is nested within the cover portion.
