Description

CHAIR Filed July 2, 1923 Patented Jan. 15, 1924,
UNITED PATENT IsnnnL n-nnnnr, or synecnsn, NEwyoaK, ,assrcnon 'ro Tn nnelrrn. snvronns COMPANY O B E YO A QQB QRATFQN F NE $7 3 CHAIR.
Appli a ion fil July 2,
Te a 1, km i may www- Be it known that I, ISRAEL Hncnnr, a citizen of the United States of America, of y a u e, in the unty f en a, in he State of New York, have invented new and use u Imp n s in hairs of hi the following, taken in connection with the m any ng draai a 1 c a an exact description.
This invention relates to a certain new and improved chair.
In the use of chairs, as for instance,.dining rooms chairs which are generally of ,comparatively light Weight and structure great ditliculty has been experienced in connecting the seat framework to. the rear legs in a sufficiently rigid and strong manner to withstand general use, which in this class of chairs particularly includes the tilting back of the chair by one sitting upon it so that the sole vertical support of the ehair is the two rear legs with a lever action of the seat PQ t Q po the hin be e it h said rear legs under the weight ef the per 1 son sitting upon the chair seat.
For the purpose ofmeeting that difficulty of providing a chair that will withstand such strains, I have produced the structure of this invention which is peculiarly strong and rigid and at the same time gives an improved appearance to the chair.
Other objects and advantages relate to the details of construction and arrangement of the parts of the chair, all as will more fully pp om the wi g d crip n, taken n conn ti th h ac ompany n drawings in which Figure l is a pfirfipective view of a chair of my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating the connection between the sides of the seat framework and the rear legs.
The chair illustrated in the drawings of this application comprises in the usual manner front legs -1 and -2--, a seat frame 3-, rear legs 4- and --5 which may be extended upwardly beyond the seat frame 0 and connected by a cross bar 6- to constitute the back of the chair.
The particular ornamentation and reinforcement of the various parts of the chair may be of any form and character desired, and constitutes no part of this invention as 1323. Serial vNo. "SQ-p39.
upon the ends ,,-7 and ,,8. of the seatframe, the flanged portions 9; being.
preferably of substantially half the width of the side walls r,7l1 and 12 of the seat frame and of a length substantially equal to the width of the rear legs and 5 of the chair, or the channels ,13 in said legs for the reception of the projecting flanges 9 which preferably fit tightly in the channels and form with the outer surface of the rear legs a substantially smooth exterior contour. This inter locking of the seat frame and the rearlegs in itself constitutes a rigid engagement between the parts, but nay-invention includes in addition to such interlocking of the seat frame with the rear legs, the utilizationlof one or more dowels .1l, mounted in the end of the side wall -cl 1, and +12% of the said frame and extending substantially parallel with the flanged portions 9 and spaced therefrom, and of slightly less length than thefianged portions ;-9 and adapted tofit into a correspo ding series of openings, seats, or recesses 15 formed in the rear legs 4 and ,5i of the chair adjaeent the channels or grooves nsl 3-t. By this cen treet en wit the f n s at in the grooves -l3 and the dowels 14 seated in the recesses 15 a very strong and rigid engagement is effected between the said frame and the rear legs.
In addition, triangular braces 16- are provided at each corner of said frame and adapted to fit tightly within the corners, four of such braces being provided, one at each corner joint and secured to the respective walls of the said framework as by screws 17--.
As illustrated, the said framework is more or less square in conformation and comprises the two side walls 11- and 12 the rear wall -18- disposed between and connected to the rear legs -4-- and -5 respectively, and the front wall --19 disposed between and connected to the front legs -1- and -2- respectively.
This particular conformation and structure of seat frame-work is merely illustrative, as are the other features of the chair described, except the particular construction, arrangement and connection between the side walls lland -12 of the seat framework and the rear legs 4-' and 5 of the chair, and altho I have shown and described a specific construction, form and arrangement of parts, all as illustrative of an embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to restrict myself to the details of the same, as various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims,
I claim 1. In a chair, the combination with a pair of rear legs having grooves extending from front to rear thereof and a plurality of recesses adjacent the grooves, of a seat frame having its side members formed with longitudinally extending flanges seated in said recesses of the legs respectively, and dowels projecting from the ends of the side mem bers and extending substantially parallel with the flanges and seated in the recesses in the legs respectively.
2. In a chair, the combination with a pair of rear legs having grooves extending from front to rear upon the exterior sides thereof, and a plurality of recesses adjacent the grooves, of a seat frame having its side members formed with longitudinally extending flanges of a length substantially equal to the width of the said legs from front to rear, tightly fitting within the respective groove's and being substantially flush with the exterior surface of the respective legs, and dowels extending from the ends of the side members, said dowels being of somewhat less length than said flanges and extending substantially parallel with the flanges and spaced therefrom, tightly fitted in the recesses in the respective legs.
3. In a chair, the combination with a pair of rear legs having grooves extending from front to rear thereof, and a plurality of recesses adjacent the grooves, of a seat frame having its side members formed with longitudinally extending flanges seated in said recesses of the legs respectively, and dowels projecting from the ends of the side members and extending substantially parallel with the flanges, and seated in the recesses in the legs respectively, and triangular bracing means within and secured to the seat frame at the junctures of the seat frame with the rear legs.
4. In a chair, the combination with a pair of rear legs having grooves extending from front to rear upon the exterior sides thereof, and a plurality of recesses adjacent the grooves, of a seat frame having its side members formed with longitudinallyv extending width of said legs from front to rear tightly fitting within the respective grooves, and being substantially flush with the exterior surface of the respective legs, dowels extending from the ends of the side members, said flanges of a length substantially equal to the dowels being of somewhat less length than said flanges and extending substantially parallel with the flanges and spaced therefrom tightly fitted in the recesses in the respective legs, and triangular bracing means with adjacent its respective groove, of a seat,
frame having its side members formed with longitudinally extending flanges tightly fitted in said recesses of the legs respectively,
and a dowel extending from each end of the i said frame in substantial parallelism with and spaced from the respective flange and tightly fitted in the recess of its respective rear leg.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set I my hand this 21st day of June, 1923.
ISRAEL HEBERT.
