Be it known that I, ERNEST R. HUNTLEY, residing at rloledo, county of Lucas, yState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Seats, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to spring cushion seats, having an upholstered member with a depending apron or skirt and a spring unit including springs andusually a spring frame, said unit intended to be inserted within the upholstered member and enclosed by the skirt, an underlying feature of the invention being the means whereby the several parts are held in assembled position, the parts being readily attachable and capable of being detached if necessary or desir# able.

The invention has for its object therefore, to provide an improved means of the character referred to in which a simplified construction for connecting the spring frame and skirt is obtained and in which the assembling as a whole is greatly facilitated and when assembled the parts are rigidly and securely maintained in proper relative position.

Further objects of this invention relate toy certain economies of manufacture and de# tails of the construction as will hereinafter ap pear from a detailed description to follow. I accomplish the objects of my invention in one instance by the devices and means disclosed in the following specications, but it is evident that the same may be varied widely witho-ut departing from the scope of the invention as point-ed out in appended claims. A structure constituting certain embodiments of my invention, one-'of which may be preferred, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which:

Referring now to the invention illustrated fin Figs. I to IV inclusive it will be seen that the seat cushion l is shown as having an 'upper padded top or upholstered` portion 11 with a depending skirt l2. The skirt IQ-may be secured' to the upper upholstered portion ll'in any manner, as for example by a bead 13 while they lower end of the skirt maybe provided with a cord or beaded edge 14 as is well. known in the art of spring cushion seat Constructions. Within the skirt l2 and bearing against the lower side o-f the top pad or upholstered member Il is a spring unit l whichpmay be composed of a plurality of coil springs 16 variously connected together and a spring or seat` frame 17 extending peripherically around the springs adjacent the lower outermost edge thereof. `The manner in which the spring frame is attached to the skirt of the cushion constitutes the underlying fea.'- ture of the present invention and the same will now be described.

The cushion skirt l2 is provided with a peripherically extending skirt frame 2O 'illustrated in each of Figs. I, III and IV.

This skirt frame may be attached to the skirt, preferably at the lower edge and on the inner side thereof, in Various ways. One simplified and e'liicient way for attaching the skirt frame to the skirt is to provide the frame at intervals with a plurality of outwardly struck hooks 21 shown in Fig. III

and bending the same down around the bead 14 as shown in Fig. IV, thus forming quick attachment means between the strip and skirt 14. In this manner the traine 20 may be securely attached adjacent the lower edge of the skirt and along the inner face thereof. It will be seen that the plate or trame 2O may 'be provided with a bottom stitfening bead 22 which, as will be seen from F ig. I, projects outwardly in alignment, with the outermost portion of the bead* 14 on the depending skirt, while the bead 22 terminates inA an inwardly di'rectedliange`23-f V The tram'e20 is preferably provided at certain spaced intervals throughout its entire periphery with a plurality `of inwardly struck eyes or supporting links 25 formed by splitting the body portion of the 'strips along two'parallel linesl and bending the portion` `therebetween inwardly from the skirtl as shown 'to form eyes 25. Itis to be understood howeverlthat the eyes 25 and the hooks 2l may be formed in various ways other than that describedl without departing from theispirit 'and scope of my invention. The spring frame' 1i' illustrated in Figs. I 'to VI comprises a pair of parallel border wires bound together and to the springs :it-'spaced intervals and is provided at proper intervals with'hook clips 'or sup porting units to engage the several eyes 25. In the form illustrated in Figs. Viit will be seen that I have illustrated therein a different type of skirt frame 2O in which the same is secured to the skirt by turning the lower edge otthe'skirt lll upwardly and clamping the same between a downwardly turned portion 20 ot the strip 2O and the body portion thereof. rIhelower portion ot the frame 2O is providedwith a downwardly projecting bead 22, the tree flange 23 thereof being turned upwardly as shown. In this way a trough is provided extending peripherically around the lower edge of the skirt and into this trough may tit the depending hooks or lips 32 oi the several clips v30 attached to the spring trame. In Fig. VII the clips 30 are shown as made by use of a continuous strip of metal 35 ,looped at 36 around the' Aspring frame (which is here shown as only one wire I7) and a wire 15, of the spring 16. The lower portions 'and 38 ofthe strip are brought one againstth'eother, and the two inserted in an eye 25 on the skirt trame 20 in substantially the same inannerthat the single depending lip'32 oi the" other embodiments is inserted therein.,-` Thus, thev cushion, when this embodiment shown in Fig. VII is used, is assembled in substantially the same way as that heretofore described in' assemblingl the other modiiications.

In Figs. VIII to XII inclusive I have il-l lustrated a further embodiment ot my in* ventioi'i in whichmeans' are provided 'tor securing the spring frame to the skirt frame so as Vto prevent any movenien't upwardly of the clips relative to the supporting hooks or eyes 25 after assembly. In'this case the clip 30 is provided with a plurality ot depending tips 82. ot which, such asthe cent-ral tip 39, may be bent outwardly as shown in Fig. IX to engage against the lower edge oit the eye 25 to prevent movement ot the clip 30 in an'upward direction relative to the skirttrame 20, it being noted that the inwardly bent hook portion 40ct rIhe clips the clip 30 prevents the same from moving downwardly. The clip used in this embodiment of the invention is illustrated before assembly in Fig. XI, the same being stamped out of a continuous stri of metal in the manner illustrated in Fig. II where it will be seen that a strip of metal is provided at intervals withV a transverse out 42, a longitudinal slot or cut 43, a second transverse cut 44, a second longitudinally extending cut and a third transverse out 46 so as to cut out clips having on one end a plurality of tips 32 and on the other end of the strip a tongue or third tip 39. The body portion 8O of the clip is bent into the hooked position shown in Fig. IX to loop around the spring frame 17 as shown in Fig. X. After the vsame has been assembled to the spring frame the dowwardly depending clips 32 with the tongue 89 located therebetween and filling the gap between the two outermost tips 32 are inserted in an eye 25 on the depending skirt frame 20 as shown in Fig. VIII, and the tongue 39 thereupon bent outwardly as shown in Fig. IX to hold the clip in position as aforesaid relative to the spring frame 20. It will be noted that in this case, as in the embodiment of Fig. VI, the body portion of the clip 30 is separate from the frame 20 and extends inwardly from this skirt frame around the spring frame 17 and then downwardly in the tongue or tip 39 into the eye 25 on the skirt frame 20. It will be understood that the assembly of the spring frame or spring unit in the cushion seat with the form of clip and arrangement illustrated in Figs. VIII to XII inclusive is substantially the same as that heretofore described in connection with Figs. I to IV.

It will thus be seen that in each of the embodiments of my. invention is provided a construction wherein the cushion and the skirt are so secured to the spring frame as to be readily attacliable thereto and also detachable therefrom if such operation is desired or becomes necessary. It will be further apparent that the frame 2() which is attached to the skirt of the cushion is devoid of any hooks whatever and that the spring frame is the element of the combination provided with means to engage the skirt frame, such as the hooks hereinbefore described in order to form the connection between these two parts of the assembled device. It is further apparent from the modi- -'cations of the invention described that the same may be carried out in innumerable ways without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. So that while I have described my invention in more or less detail as being embodied in certain forms I do not desire or intend to be limited thereto as on the contrary my invention contemplates broadly all proper changes as well as the omission of immaterial elements and the substitution of equivalents therefor as circumstances may suggestor necessity render expedient.

Having thus described my invention what I desire to secure by'Letters Patent of the United States and claim is:

l. In a seat, the combination with a border frame and a cushion, of a skirt depending from said cushion enclosing said frame, a strip securedl to the inner face of said skirt adjacent to the lower edge thereof and a plurality of downwardly extending hooks secured to said border frame lfor engaging said strip. y

2.*In a seat, the combination with a spring frame and a cushion, of a skirt depending from` said cushion enclosing said frame, a metallic frame extending around the lower edge of said skirt Vand secured thereto and hook clips having loop portions secured upon and extending outwardly from 4said spring frame and detachably engaging the inner side of the skirt frame whereby the spring frame is supported by said skirt frame.

In a seat,'the combination with a spring frame and a cushion, of a skirt dependingv from said cushion adapted to enclose said frame, a metallic strip extending around the inner face of said skirt adjacent to the lower edge thereof, a plurality of outwardly extending downwardly turned hooks having loops connected with said spring frame for engaging said metallic strip and quick attachment means between said stripv and said skirt.

4. In a cushion seat comprising an upholstery portion having a depending skirt and a spring` unit including a plurality of springs secured to a base frame, means for securing said skirt to' saidv spring unit comprising a strip carried by said 'skirt and having an integraleye formed therein, and a member looped around an adjacent portion of said base frame and engaging said eye.

5. In a seat, the combination witha spring frame and a cushion, of a skirt depending from said cushion enclosing said frame, a sheet metal strip extending around and secured to the lower edge of said skirt and provided with integral eyes thereon, and clips secured upon and extending outwardly and downwardly from said spring frame adapted to engage said eyes to secure said spring frame to said strip.
