My invention relates 'to mattress filler springs. I
The invention has for its principal object the provision of an inner spring for mattresses wherein the outer edges are much more resilient than the remainder thus lending themselves to the contour of ones body when sitting upon a bed equipped therewith without tending to cut ones anatomy.
Another object of the invention is the provision of such a spring which has the effect of a spring filling equipped with fabric filled edges but which is cheaper to manufacture.
Another object of the invention is the pro- .16 vision of novel reinforcing means and means for preventing slippage of clamped parts.
These and other objects will appear by reference to the following description and drawings in which a Figure 1 is a plan view of my mattress filler spring, partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a plan view showing a fractional part of a modified form of my mattress filler spring;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an illustration in plan view of a modified form of my construction showing the flexible member completely surrounding the main body portion of the spring.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout, 1 represents the usual elongated helical springs preferably of the hour-glass type which are placed'in rows to any desired width or length and which are clipped to each other and to stay wires 2 between each row, at their tops and bottoms by clips 3 as shown.
The stay wires 2 are offset or crimped as at 4, see Fig. 2, at the portions where the clips engage them for the purpose of pre venting the clips and springs from sliding thereon.
An upper and a lower frame member surrounds the springs. In Figs. 1 and 3, the frame member comprises two stay wires, one at each end portion which are connected to two-flexible connecting wires or cables 5, 50 one at each side. Said flexible connecting 1950. Serial No. 460,581.
wires are bent back upon themselves and are clipped to the off-set portion in the end stay Wires. In Fig. 5 the entire frame members are made of flexible wires secured by a clip and the ends bent back upon themselves.
Bordering the four sides of the main spring frame, are a series of elongated helical cylindrical springs 6 of greater resiliency than the main springs and which are preferably cylindrical as they then require no padding to fill out the mattress border to present a smooth side Wall. They are clipped to each other at top and bottom by clips similar to those heretofore mentioned and are also secured to the stay wires 2 by similar clips, some being engaged by the clips which secure the main springs to the frame members.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown the spring 6 as covered by a fabric 7 having partitions 8 between each coil so as to deaden noises from the clashing of said springs when being compressed.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of other adaptations 75 and modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A spring structure comprising a series of interconnected elongated helical springs of the hour glass type, upper and lower flexible metal border frame structures enclosing and attached to said springs, cylindrical springs mounted outside of said frame structures and having certain points attached to said frame structures, said cylindrical springs also being attached to each other, the points of attachment of said cylindrical springs to said frame structures and to each other being the only points of attachment of said cylindrical springs to the other parts of the spring structure.
2. A spring structure comprising rows of spaced apart elongated helical springs of hour-glass type, stay wires between adjacent 95 rows of said springs at the top and bottom thereof, means for securing the springs in each row to the corresponding springs in the next row and to the intervening stay wires, upper and lower flexible metal border frame structures enclosing and attached to said springs and cylindrical springs mounted outside of said frame structures, the inner portion of said cylindrical springs having attach- 5 ment thereto at certain points, said cylindrical springs also being attached to each other, the points of attachment of said cylindrical springs to said frame structures and to each other bein the only points of attachment of said cylindrical springs to the other parts of the spring structure.
