htlddiid TYNTTEQ STATES CHARLES HENRY MITCHELL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND,
ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- IMENTS, TO SAID MITCHELL AND THOMAS CLEMENT BENCH, OF KINGSTON, SUR- any, ENGLAND.
G'AS COOKER Application filed January 4, 1922. Serial No. 527,047.
To all 'w/mm. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRY lilrrorrinm, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 42 Berners Street, London, WV. 1, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Gas Cooke-r, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to gas cookers and has for its object to devise an improved and simplified form of cooker which shall be compact in construction, easily adjustable and readily manipulatable in practical operation and which will shown a. very considerable economy in gas consumption in relation to the functions which itis cap'able of fulfilling as compared with other gas cookers hitherto proposed or adopted.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the improvements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one mode of carrying out the invention:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a cooker in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a. front elevation;
Figure 3 is a sectional plan, and
Figure 4: is a side elevation.
Tn carrying my invention into effect in one convenient manner, I form my improved cooker with an external sheet metal or other suitable casing a divided into two compartments 6, c, the lower compartment being fitted with shelves d adapted to take a tray or other utensil or support on which the grilling or toasting of comestibles may be effected by means of the toasting grid 8, it being understood also that the lower compartment may be employed for other purposes.
The upper compartment 0 is adapted to contain a removable oven 7' which is furnished at the rear part with a suitable foot or support 9 by means of which it may be located and at its front end with a flanged end [L by which it may be secured in place in the casing by means of the buttons 2', or other fastening devices.
The oven is also provided with a door is which may be hinged at the side or in any other suitable manner but is preferably, as shown, hinged at its lower edge so that it opens downwards and is retained in its closed position by any suitable form of spring catch or other fastening Z.
The oven is of appreciably smaller dimensions than the compartment in which it is located so that there are flue spaces surrounding the oven on all sides with the exception of the front, and above the oven the casing is closed by a hot plate at which may be provided with the usual apertures for locating coo-king utensils thereon, which hot plate may also be surrounded by a rail 11 serving to retain articles on the hot plate and at the same time capable of functioning as a toweldrying rail or the like.
The burner 0 with its gas supply pipe 1 by means of which thegrid or grill 6 is heated may be a fixture but the burner tube 1 with its gas supply pipe r by which the oven is heated is arranged to be movable so that it may be moved upwards when the hot plate only is to be heated, and down wards into its lowest position when the oven is to be heated, the burner being located in these two extreme positions and also in any desired intermediate position by means of slots 5 in the plates or guides t fitted to the side of the oven.
The gas supply pipe r and air mixing device a for the movable burner lead into a mixing chamber or box-like structure 0) in the flue space at one side of the oven where by the gas, before issuing from the burner tube 9, is thoroughly mixed with the air needed for its combustion and is also preheated by being mixed in the combustion chamber arranged in the flue space at the side of the oven.
The whole device including the burner and its mixing chamber is moved into any desired position by means of the handle w carried by the plate x, which plate also carries the pins .2 co-operating with the slots 8 to locate the burner and which also serves to cover the slot in the outer casing through which the burner supply tube passes during movement or adjustment of the burner so that there will at no time be any me'ans of escape of the heated gases through such slot.
The oven itself is provided with a series of apertures Z, through which the heated gases can pass to the interior of the oven, and the outer casing is also apertured in order to induce an even distribution of the heated gases round the oven so that the whole will thereby be thoroughly heated and it will be clear that by means of such an arrangement I am able to ensure a. thoroughly efiicient and economical use of the fuel burned while at the same time providing a system or installationwhich is sufficiently flexible in its operation to enable it to comply with a great variety of requirements.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isi: y
1. A gas cooker comprising in combination an oven, a hot-p-late above said. oven, a gas burner and means permitting the movement of said burner without removal from the cooker to heat either the oven or the hot-plate or both.
'2. A gas cooker comprising incombinatron an oven, a hot-plate above said oven and guiding means in the wall oi said oven and av plate movable with said burner and adapted to cover said slot.
at. The combination with a gas cooker according to claim 1 of a chamber adjacent the even through which the gas and air mixture passes to the movable burner tube which is carried by the member forming said chamber.
5. A gas cooker co-mprisin in combination an outer casingdivided into twocompartments an oven removably located in one of said compartments, a hot-plate covering the upper part of said compartment, a burner and means permitting the movement or" said burner without removal trom' the cooker. to heat either the oven or the hotplate or both. a
6. A gas cookercomprising in combination an outer casing divided'into two compartments, a removable oven located in one orb-said compartments, a hot-plate covering said compartment, a burner projecting through and vertically movable in the wall of said outer casing and means for supporting said burner in one of a number of different positions.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification. V I CHARLES HENRY MITCHELL.
