SAFETY HAIR CUTTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. MoELRoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Hair Gutters, of which the following isa specification.

My said invention consists in a safety hair cutter, the main object of said invention being to provide a hair cutter which can be made at a low cost and which shall be efiicient and reliable in use.

A further object of my invention is to provide a hair cutter having a comb which 5 may be adjusted to vary the length of the haircut.

Another object of my invention is to provide a hair cutter which shall conform to the contour of the head so as to cut the hair evenly.

Another object is to provide clamping devices for the bladewhich shall hold it firmly and yet permit the blade to be easily removed and replaced.

Referring to the accompanying. drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts. Figure 1. is a plan view of my device. Figure 2 is a central cross section thereof, as and Figure 3 a composite view showing the parts separated but in the position which they assume when assembled.

In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a blade having holes 11 extending therethrough and which may be grooved to conform to the curvature of the clamping members. This blade is adapted to rest on a lower clamping member 12 having screws 5 13 and lugs let projecting upwardly therefrom. The lower surface of this member is curved as shown to conform to the curvature of the head. The blade is intended to be placed on the lower clamping member with projections 1e extending through the holes 11. An upper clamping member 15 has holes 16 for engagement by the lugs 14 and holes 17 for the screws 13; this member also has cut-away portions 18 and 19 hereinafter referred to, the portion 18 being cut away from a flange 18 formed on the Another object is to provide a hair cutter member 15 as shown in Figure 3, This member also has a reversely bent flange 20 which is upwardly inclined and whose lower surface bears on the blade 10 and clamps it firmly against the member 12.

A comb 21 is-adapted to rest on the reversely bent flange 20. This comb has long teeth 22 which are adapted to project adja cent to and in front of the blade 10 as shown in Figure 2. These teeth may all be made equal in length, or the length increase from th middle toward the sides, as shown. Extending rearwardly from the body of the comb are projections 28 and between these projections there is a screw threaded link 24: hearing a screw 25 and connected by a hinge 26 to the body of the comb. A cover plate 27 inconnection with the member 12 provides a. casing enclosing the whole. The screws 13 pass through holes inthe cover plate and nuts 28 are adapted to draw the parts firmly together, thus clamping; the blade between the upper and lower clamps and holding the comb in proper relation thereto. It will be understood that when the nuts 28 are brought to bear upon the casing 27, the member 12 and the casing 27 will be drawn together, the inner side of the upper curved surface of the casing bearing against the flange 18 whereby the member 15 is firmly held seated on the lower clamping member 12, the blade 10 being clamped therebetween. The comb is held between the lower face of the cover plate and the flange 20 by member 15 The link 24 extends through a key hole slot 29 in the casing and the nut 25 has a slot 30 for engaging the edge of the key hole slot for holding the nut thereto. The device being assembled as described, the length of the haircut may be adjusted by turning the nut 25 and thus moving the link 24; to vary the extent to which the comb projects forward from the casing. The further the comb projects, the longer the hair will remain, and the lessthe projection, the shorter the hair. The projections 23 extending rearwardly from the comb hold it firmly or yieldingly in place in any position of adjustment and permit the teeth to slide practically parallel tothe bent portion of the cover plate. The comb fits closely between the sides of the cover. plate, its hinge 26 projecting into notch 19 when farthest advanced, and the nut 25 engaging in the notch 18.

The principal parts of my device may be made in an inexpensive manner by punch ing them out of sheet metal and bending the indicated portions into shape, where- 7 upon they may be fixed in place by soldering or welding the contacting edges.

Various changes and modifications will occur to those skilled in the art and I do not limit myself to the particular form of the invention shown, the true scope of theinvention being indicated by the claims. As an instance of such a modification, I may substitute the well-known Durham duplex razor blade for that shown in the draw ings.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a safety hair cutter, a' hollow lower clamp having its lower side curved longitudina-lly and transversely, and its upper surface curved longitudinally, an upper clamp also longitudinally curved above and below, a bladebet-weenthem, a comb resting on the upper clamp, a cover plate enclosing the other parts and means to clamp the whole together and formed to fit the hand, substantially as set forth.

2. In a safety hair cutter a blade having a straight cutting edge, a casing therefor, said casing exposing said cutting edge, a comb adjacent the blade, the end teeth of I the comb projecting the farthest from the casing and the projection of the teeth diminishing gradually from each end toward the middle of the comb, substantially asset forth.

. Ina safety hair'cutter an upper and lower clamping member, a blade between the clamping members, a combined casing and handle, a comb carried between the casing and upper clamping member, and means for holding the parts in operative relationship, substantially .as *set forth.

6. 7. In a safety hair cutter, a lower clamping member having lugs and screws thereon, an upper clamping member, a blade aper tured to receive said lugs, an adjustable comb hav ng a screw threaded ad uSting link extending rearwardly therefrom, a

combined'handle and casing having a. slot in its rear portion ada'ptedto receive said link, and means for clamping the casingto the lower clamping member whereby the parts are held in operative relatiomsubstantially asset forth.
