To all whomrz't may concern: Y
Be it 'known that LWVILLTAM D. lViiiGi-i'r n n' L u n 7 a citizen ofthe United States, residing at L nchburg in the countv of Campbell and State of Virginia. have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Advertising,
Devices, of 4which' the speciiication. Y l
This invention relates to advertising defollowing- YVis a .vices and its primary object is toj provide a simple and inexpensive but durable device Vwhich will be automatically operated to periodically, display an annoiincement V and attract the attention of passers-by with ceritainty. Another objet-tof tli invention is to provide an advertising device which will' require practically no attention from the user and` which maybe actuated by the force of the wind. Another object or" the invention is to provide Aadevice whichjmay be dis# played'oiitdoors and in whiclitlie working elements will be protected from the action ported 'that it Ywill* always Vbe inV operative Other objects of the invention will appear incidentally in the course of the following description. i

ground and is equipped Vat its upper end Figs. Tand 8'are views similar to Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, showing another formV of the invention. i
In carrying" out my invention, I'employ a post l'which is suitably anchored in the with a reduced portion 2 of circular cross section which constitutes'a pivot postvfor the'body 3 of the-apparatus. lVhile the device is intended more kparticularly for' outdoor use, `'it obviously may be made in smaller sizes suitable for arrangement with-` in the show window of a Vstore and mounted upon Va fixed support of any convenient form. The body 3 of therdeviee isgivena. form simulating van aeroplane .and is venclosed on all sides, except Yfor. aslotfl in itsl c top'7 through which a sign or displaygcard 5 lmay be periodically V raised and lowered. Secured within the body and rising through the ends vof the -said slot 4Q are channeled guides 6 `which are slidably enga-ged vby the edges .ofv thedisplaycard or sign 5 so that the Said card will bel caused to move inaNVA rectilinear path. 1 The'g-guides will `extend above Ythe top of the body a lsufficient Vdis-V tancefto be engaged by the sign ordisplay member when; the latter is in itskegtreme upper position YAand the height ofthe body will be at least equal-to thevertical dimensaid member islgiweredg itmay-be coinpletely housed nwithin thefbody. The :outer surfaces ofthe body may be decorated with stars or other insignia, as indicated atf,` or may be utilized for advertising purposes, Y permanent announcements being painted or A otherwise placed thereon. The tail vaneor' rudder l8 of the device may be utilized forl sired construction and lof' any approved material. I prefer to form it'of sheet metal .having its 'upper edgeifrolled or-,otlierwise doubledfaround a tube or rod 'l0 whichhas itsenrdsj Vfitted in the channels of the guides. this construction being shown/in Fig. 6.
sion ofthe displayV member so that, 'wlien soY Theframes 9 are open andan operatingIlr lever -lllexten'ds through` they front` frameA and has-its rear end connected withthe 'lo-wer lendof the display inemberby av pin andslot connection, as Vshown at l2; The
meY 'i lever` vextends rearwardly Yfrom and-forms V 'a partof a yoke 13 whicliis pivoted at its frontl extremities to the sidel walls of the body,as shown at 14C, andleaf springs 15 are Vpreferably secured upon the sidewallsof the body to bear against'tlie under edges of the xyoke ajdjacent'the front ends j of..` the'. saine whereby; to Vassist in raising thejyokeV in the "operation of the apparatus..v Therearppor- K 'tiene of theiylokeare-reinforcedby fa cross bar or brace 16,-=as willfbe readily .understood the body 3, which is inte .pin 31 projecting for a short period vabove tue p y 3 so that the announcement thereon may be easily read. Y
upon referenceM passes aro i cross bars body above y structed with bearings and thereby rotatabl the post.
lWithin the front end of the'body, l cure a supporting structure consisting ot frames i9, secure/l -in any convenient orpreerred manner to the Walls of the body transversely of the saine and tubular ineinbers 2O disposed longitudinally et the body and secured in the raines l9 vLhishings 2l are iittedin the ends oi these tubular inen bers to provide bearings for the shafts ,22 and 23 and also close the ends or' the tubes so that lubricant supplied thereto cannot escape and be lost. vertically disposed tubes extend between Vthe upper and lower tubes 2O and establish. cenununication tween the saine, a'reservoir cup bei-ng` provided upon the upper tube to maintain a supply el lubricant and it the saine to flow readily into the up er tube. 'l also provide a cup or trough QG -dedto contain a the loiver portion A non supply of lubricant, and orn Jhe 4gear Wheel 27, which is secured u the shaft 23, di nto th l nt Wit the said cup r rh of the lubricant projects throughV the l i 3 and is equippedl with a pr Wheel Q9, the blades et which are that air currents flowing will impart rotation to the 'Y l el .H e ancL thereby rotate the shalt 22. bviOuSly, the rotation of the shalt 22 will be transmitted. directly to the described gearing. Upon the 'fac of the 2? is grooved cani 30, the groove oi" which is engaged by a stud r H forwardly 'from the cross bar 16 at the center or the saine. The rota-` tion of the cano Will obviously effect sliding movement of thepin or stud Within the earn groove and the said pin will thus be given a reciprocatory movement in a vertical plane so that the yoke 13 and the lever l2 Will be vertically oscillated. Upon reference to Fig. 1i, moreover7 itV will be noted that the cam has a portion 32 Tvhich is nearly hat and is substantially chordal to theV gear $27.V This chordal portion of the earn is innuediately adiacent'he periphery of the gear so that it will engage the pin 3l When the pin is atits highest point.Y The display inem- "ber' or sign will, there-tore.y be maintained top oit the body 'w J-L .E n the bert -in or' bracket 5l on the liront llllhen the device is arrangedoutdoors, it will, or course, be driven by the Wind, and when itis displayed Within a shovv Windowv it maybe operated by the blast from conycnient blower. Should the air currents be derving; in a direction transverse to the body ciC the device, they Will strike the side or the tail vane 8 and ivill thereby suing the body around upon its pivotal support 2 so that the propeller or Wind Wheel Q9 will be brought into the. head of the Wind. The said propeller Willv then be. obviously rotated will transmit motion to the describe/l ,gearing` whereby the lever ll Wili be oseilleted vand the display member 5 will be raised. and lowered at regular intervals. will thus be seen that the operation oi 1 device is automatic and continuous'so that no attention will be required from the user except to occasionally replenish the supply of lubricant. The lubrication 0f the driving1 Vineehanisno is thorough inasinuch en cup Vor reservoir inay be initially ted and through the said parts. .The cup or trough 2G will maintain an adequate supply of lubricant for the teeth or the gears 'for a protracted period and thisrtrough or cup will preferably be ei such depth that it will also supply lubricant to the groove ot the earn 30. lli/ly device is obviously simple and compact in the construction and arrangenient oit its partstand all the Working parts are protected from the Weather so that it may be produced and set up at a lovv cost and will prove durable. of the driving; shadt.` said sha'it ev;- tended through a tubular neinber el which supported by a post 4t2 rising, troni the bottoni ot the body. The pinion 40 nicshes with a beveled pgear i3 which secured upon a transverser shalt 44: which is housed within a tubular inenber Lil-5, the housi l5 being' connected with the housing,Y l1 a brace 476 so te counteract any tendency oit the gears to separate under strain. @il cups 4C? are provided upon both tubular meinbers or housings for an obvious purpose. The cani i8 is provided on the outer side et the gear 4l?) and is operatively engaged by a pin i9 'on Vthe side et the lever 50, said lever being pivoted at its front end to end et the inain and slot connec- The body and having' a pin tion at its rear end with the sign 5.

thereby Vmaintain proper relation of the lever to the sign, while a retractile coiled spring 53 is attached to the leverrandthe top of the body to aid in the upward movement thereof. A trough 54. may be provided to furnish lubricant to the groove of the cam. as in the case of the trough 26, the trough 54 being indicated in dotted lines only for the salie of clearness in the showing of the other parts. It will be noted that the lever is arched at 55 so that its downward movement will not meet interference with the transverse shaft.
