To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUPERT FREDERICK DUN- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairlield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in advertising devices, and pertains more particularly to devices of this character which represent figures, either human beings, or animals, or the like, and which have movable eyes, the eyes being reciprocated by the momentum of a vehicle, such as a trolley car, so as to thereby attract the attention of the passengers.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned in which improved means ,is provided to enable movement of the eyes and to dispense with the use of coil springs in mounting of the eyes.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3- of the drawings, a casing 1, is employed which may be of any preferred form, the casing being shown as a metal plate having wings or. flanges. 2, which engage and are secured to the rear face of the sign 3 the latter having the advertising matter imprinted thereon, and also bearing a sheet of paper or the like 4 which represents the head of a human being, animal, bird, or the like; the present illustration depicting the head of a child. Obviously the head to be portrayed can be, if desired, printed on the face of the sign board 3.

The eyes 5, are mounted or printed on a pair of spaced opposed carriers or members 6, which latter are loosely yoked or connected together by means of a link 7. Depending from the carriers 6, are rigid rods,

or'stems 8 to the lower ends of which short fiat springs 9 are attached, the lower ends of the springs 9 being secured to relatively stationary points on the casing l, or may be secured, if desired to a supplemental strip 10 which is rigidly secured to the casing 1, as depicted in Fig. 1.

It is particularly to be noted that by the employment of a stiif rigid stem 8, and a short flexible wire 9, that the extent or degree of vibration of the eye carriers may be adjusted and governed as desired by simple lengthening or shortening of the springs 9, and corresponding shortening or lengthening of the stems 8, or in other words separate weights, the object of the weights.

being to effect constant movement of the carriers back and forth across the eye openings 12 which are provided for the purpose of exposing the eyes through the sign board.

In Figs. 4 and 5, a modified form of the invention is shown in which a single carrier 13 has both of the eyes connected thereto, and a single stiff rigid stem 8 and a single flexible member 9, is employed, the stem 8 being connected centrally of the length of the carrier. This form of the invention is preferred in cases of signs in which the eyes of the figure are closely related.

In Figs. 6 and 7, a still further modified form of the invention is illustrated, in which a substantially rectangular frame 14 of open construction is employed, the frame having opposed horizontal tracks 15, in the form of ribs, formed on the inner faces of the frame sides. Mounted within the frame 14 for reciprocal movement, is a carrier 16 to which both of the eyes are secured, the carrier having grooved wheels 17, journaled thereon, which wheels ride on the tracks 15. The frame 14 has an opening 18 through which the stiff rigid stem 8 projects, the upper end of the stem extending within a small opening 19, formed in the bottom'side of the carrier 16, so as to have free play within said 7 opening. As in the other forms of the invention, the flexible element 9, is secured to' a stationary point at its lower end, such as block 10, or same may be secured directly to the casing, and has its upper end secured to the lower end of the stem 8.

Obviously in Figs. 1 to i of the drawings, the construction therein shown is such that the reciprocal movements of the carrier may be limited by engagement of the ends of the carrier with the ends of the casing, providing such restriction is desirable. Similarly in Figs. 6 and 7 the ends of the carrier engaging with the ends of the frame will accordingly be restricted in the reciprocal movements thereof.

In the forms of the invention depicted in Figs. 1 and 4, of the drawings, the carrier or What is claimed is:

1. In an advertising device, an eye carrier, a stiff rigid thick stem engaged at one end with the carrier, and a thin flexible element disposed below and rigidly connected at its upper end to the stem and at its opposite end being connected to a relatively stationary point whereby the spring supports the stem.

2. A device of the character described comprising a support bearing a representa tion, openings in the support, a movable member mounted in the rear of said support bearing a complemental representation showing through the said openings, flexible spring elements secured to the rear of the support and carrying the movable member 'at the upper ends thereof and Weighting means connected to the movable member arranged above the points of support of the flexible spring elements.
