*EJNHT a stares ERNEST L. TEICH, OF NEW BRITAIN; CQNN ECTICUTy ASSlGNOR To 'THEF'AMERICAN' HARDWARE CORPORATION, NEW BRITAIN, QONNECQDICUT, -A CORPORATION-OF CONNECTICUT,
Application filed May a, 1 9 22.: Serjal.1o. 555,173.
To all aofiom-z't may concern-1;
Be it known thatl, EnNnsT L. Tame, a citizen vof the United States, residing at New Britain, countyof PhrtforcLState of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and vuseful Improvement; in Reversible Locks, of which the following is afull, clear and exact description. p The present invention "relates to looks,
and Inore'particularly to looks for double French doors. 7
Another object of the inventionis to pro- 'vide striker and face plates for locks for French doors whichare capable of being applied to either right orleft hand doors.
,The several features of the invention whereby the above mentioned and other ob- .jects of the invention may be attained will he clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:-
:Figxl is a front View of a portion of a pair of French doors with a lock applied to 'a right hand'door embodying the features a of the invention in their preferred forin;
Fig. 2v is an inner or front edgeview of a portion of one of the doorsshowing particularly the face plate of the lock; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the d p other door showing particularly the strikerfiplate :of the look; I
Fig 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the lock applied to a left hand French door;
i Fig. 5 is an inneror front edge view of one i of the doors shown in Fig. 4 showing particu'larly thestriker plate of the lock;
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the otherdoor showing particularly the face plate of the lock;
Figs. 7 and 8 are sectionalviews taken on the lines 7-7 and 88 of Figs. 1 and 4 respectively; and
Figs. 9 and 10' are detailed perspective views of component parts of the striker plate and face plate respectively of the lock.
The doors illustrated'in the drawings are 7 l lanvniesretn 1400K,
ofthe usual French consisting so as to form afrabbeti j'oint, the d'oor2 carrying the lock and 'the rabbeting f in the doors illustrated in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings being. such as to provide'jright hand doors, and the rabbeting of' the doors illus-Q trated in Fig; '45 being suchas to pr0vide left hand doors. The lock which is mounted in the-usual mortise or recess 1O of the door 2'is provided witha case 12, a cover 14 forthe case, knobs 16,;and a kno'b' op- "erated'latch bolt 18 which is so arranged as to be capable of being reversed in position; The forward end of the lock ca'se' projects a distancefroin the'pocket 10 and the'fla'n'ge 8 of the doori4; is cut away at 19 to clear. the projecting portion of the lock case when the doors are closed. The-Iockisfurtherf provided with a face plate 20 which is see curedby screws 22' to the front of the lock case 12 so that it can be feasilyre n'oved "and reversed. The lock is'secured by' screws 23 'to thefront of the flange 8 of the door" 2 the flange 8 being provided with a depression .or recess for receiving the face plate so asto cause the face plate when attached to be flush with the inner or front face of the'door flange 8. The face plate is provided with the usual latch receiving aperture 23 and lock bolt receiving aperture 24;. The face plate'projectsislightly beyond the sides of ;the lock case and the end portions of the plate project adistance 'beyondfthe ends of the lock case and 'arecut away at21 to cause the inneredges of these projectingportions to be flush with the side-of the door flange 8.
"In the illu'strated construction: the face plateis'providedfwith a flange 25 made separate from the plate and secured by a screw 26 to the side of the projectingportjion'of r the lockcase 1'2 and if desiredby-scr'ews 26 to the side 'ofthe'f'door' flange 8." The 'flange25' is 'substantiallyof the' sh'ape of the inner edge o-fthe faceplateandis so arranged as to bersubstantlally flush with said inner edge, the door flange 8 being suitably recessed toreceive the end portions rabbet of the door 4, the plate being substantially of the same length as the face plate and having its inner edge shaped to fit the wall of the cut away portion 19 of the door flange. The front wall of the rabbet is suitably recessed to cause the striker plate to be flush therewith. The striker plate is provided with the usual latch bolt receiving aperture 80 and'the lock bolt receiving aperture 32.
In the illustrated construction the striker plate is provided with a flange '34 made separate'therefroni and shaped to lit the wall of the cut away portion 19 of the door flange with its inner'longitudinal edge abutting the face of the striker plate. The flange 34 is secured at its ends to the door flange 8 by screws 36.
It has been customary heretofore to make the flanges of therstriker and face plates integral therewith, with the result that it has been necessary to manufacture striker and face plates of two different constructions, one for right hand and the other for left hand French doors. By making the flanges separate from the plates, however,
. as above described, it will be apparent that the flanges may be reversed in respect to the sides of their respective plates so as to enable a single lock or striker plate to be used on either right or left hand doors, so that it is necessary to keep on hand for installation, striker and face plates of but one con struction. The lock is provided with a refversible latch bolth of ordinary construction, and the complete lock, including the striker and face plates, may by reversing the plates and transferring the flanges, as 1 shown, be used on either right or left hand 40 doors. I
As will be evident to thoseskilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from thespirit thereof or the scope ofthe'appended claims.
What I claim is: 7 f
I. A look for double doors of the type having rabbeted edges forming flanges that are arranged to engage when the doors are closed having, in combination, a lock case and a reversible latch bolt mounted in one of the doors, a reversible face plate for the lock adapted to be applied to the front face of the flange of said door, a reversible striker plate adapted to be applied to the front wall of the rabbet of the other door, and flanges for both of said plates adapted to be applied to the inner sides of the flanges of the doors and to either side of the plates, respectively, to enable the lock to be used on either right or left hand doors.
2. A look for double doors of .thetype having rabbeted edges forming flanges that are arranged to engage when the doors are closedhaving, in combination, a lock case and a reversible latch bolt mounted in one of the doors, a face plate adapted to be applied to the front face of the flange of said door, a striker plate adapted'to be applied to the front wall of the rabbet of the other door one of said plates being reversibleand a flange for said reversible plate adapted to be applied to the inner side of theflange I of the .door'to which said plate is applied and to be arranged at either sideof the plate to enable the plate and its flange to be used on'either right or left hand doors. 3. A look for a door having a rabbeted front edge forming a flange having, in combination, a reversible latch bolt, a reversible face plate for the lock adapted to be applied to the front face of the door flange, and a flange for the plate adapted to be applied to the inner side of the door flange and to either side of the plate. V
4. A look for double doors of the type having rabbeted edges forming flanges that are arranged to engage when thedoors are closed having, in combination, a lock case and a reversible latch bolt mounted in one of the doors, areversible face plate adaptflange of said door, a reversible striker plate adapted to be applied to the front wall of the rabbet of the other door, oneof said plates having its longitudinal edges unsymmetrical, and a flange for said plate adapted to be applied to the inner side of the flange of the door to which said plate is applied and to either side of one of said edges of the plate to enable theplate and ERNEST L.
