GARMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY KAnnnrr-r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Des Moines, in thecounty of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Garment, of which the following is a specification. v V

This invention relates to improvements in garments such as ready-made trousers. The ready-made garments are made in standard sizes and sold tothe retail stores, which are then sold to the consumer. I find that a large number of the standard size'trousers have to be-lengthened or shortened in. the waist, and especially in that type of trousers which are designed to use the belt at the waist band, as a long waisted trouser will not hang properly from a short waisted person. -For that reason, the retailer is placed to a considerable expense and delay in hav ing the waist of the trousers shortened. This can only be done by cutting the top edge of the waist oif and refinishing it. It generally requires almost a day of a tailors time to make the alteration, and when made the work is not very satisfactory due to the fact that the finish of the garment is very seldom as perfect at it would be if it had been done at the time the trousers were manufactured.

The object of my invention is to overcome the difficulty above describe-d by providing a garment with a minimum length waist, then adding to the waist a band of such width that a waist of maximum length will be produced, and so arranged that it may be quickly removed from the garment proper.

More specifically it is the object of my invention to provide a detachable band for the waist of garments so arranged that when secured to the garment it gives a finished appearance to the outside, and in connection with the waist of the garment belt strips which may be either used in connection with the detachable band or the waist proper.

My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the garment, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral 10 indicates the waist portion of a pair of trousers having the usual pockets, and so f orth, this.-waist portion of the trousers being made the minimumlength.

To the upper edge of the waist portion, I have provided a band portion 11,v this band being of such width that when in position, the waist will be of a maximum length. The band 11 is formed of the same material as the waist portion and secured thereto by forming the regular seam 12, the upper edge of the waist being turned down at 13, while the lower edge of the band is turned up at 14.

The upper edge of the Waist is then provided with a lining strip 15 which has its upper edge turned downwardly at 16 adjacent to the seam portion 13. A row of stitches is then applied to secure the upper edges of the lining and the waist portion together. v

The band 11 is provided with a lining strip 18 having its lower edge 19 turned upwardly adjacent to the portion 14:, the lower edge of the said lining 18 and the said band 11 being secured together by means of a row of stitches 20. The upper edges of the lining and band 11 are secured together by means of a row of stitches 21. The said stitches may also be made to secure a binding strip 22 in position. This strip is not shown in Figure 1 and may be used or not at the option of the manufacturer.

A series of belt retaining strips 23 is provided spaced in the usual manner, one end of each of said'strips being sewed to the upper edge of the waist 10, and the opposite end sewed to the upper edge of the waist band is too long and wishes to have the band shortened, the merchant simply sends the trousers to his tailor, who takes a knife and cuts the stitches holding the upper ends of the strips 23 to the upper edge of the waist band and leaves the opposite end of the strips 23 secured to the upper edge of the waist, and then simply cuts the stitches l7 and removes the band 11.

The lining in the upper edge of the waist proper is already finished and the only thing he needs to do is to turn the bands 23 downwardly and stitch the lower ends to the waist and place a button and button hole in the position indicated by dotted lines and the numeral 26 to take the place of the button 25 after which the trousers are ready toreturn to the customer, all of which can be done- I find by actual practice, in less than fifteen minutes.

I claim as my invention I 1.
