MARTIN JENSEN, O'CHERAW, SOUTH CAROLINA.
HINGE.
Application iled July 19, 1922. Serial No. 576,066.
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheraw, in the county of Chesterfield and A State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, Aof which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a hinge construction, primarily adapted for use in connection with easement windows,
but, of course, susceptible to other uses, and
has for its object to produce in a hinge,
means for preventing the accidental vopening' or closing of the*pivotally-connected lplates constituting the hinge. Y
A further object. is to arrange 1n the barrel end of plates constituting a hinge, sleeve 5 in the barrels of the hinge.
rIhe foregoing, and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination 0 and operative association of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this application.'
In the drawing Y Figure l is a plan view of a hinge in acl5 cordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view onthe line 2 2 of Figurel.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figures 4 and 5 are views of the clutch sleeve members, looking toward'the toothed ends thereof. i
ln general, the hinge l is constructed in Va manner similar Vto that of the ordinary hinges, the hinge comprising plates l and 2 which have their confronting edges provided with spaced barrels 3 designed for interen gagement between each other, and through these barrels there is passed the usual pintle 4. Two of the confronting barrels, one yon each of the plates l andr2 are spaced a dis- .tance away from each other, and the inner.
'The confronting faces of the sleeves edges of the plates opposite the referred to narrow barrels are notched, as at and 6 respectively.
Designed to pass through the notch 5 of the plate l is a sleeve member 7. The sleeve has a groove 8 that engagesthe'inner edge of the said plate l. The sleeve is sustained on the hinge by the pintle4 passing through the bore thereof. The sleeveT-has a socketv portion 9 communicating with'itsbore but. of alarger area than that of thev bore, and in this socket there is received a helical spring l0 which, of course, surrounds' the pintle 4 and which also contacts with the narrow bar# rel on the plate.V Passing through the notch 6 of the rplate 2 there is a shorter sleeve 11, the sleeve having a groove l2 that receives therethrough the inner edge of theplate 6. Tand 11 are provided withinterengaging ratchet teeth 13 and 14 respectively. The spring influences the sleeves toward each other so that the ratchet surfaces thereof will be in interengagement. The sleeve being locked to the respective plates of the hinge prevent a free swinging or accidental movement ofA either of the plates with respect to each other on the pintle 4.
Having described the invention, I claim The combination with a hingeincluding l plates having barrels on their inner ends, and a pintle passing through the barrels for connecting the plates, two of the confronting barrels, one on each of the respective plates being spaced from each other,
and the inner edges of the said plates being notched. a pair of sleeves having each a longitudinal groove designed to be passed through the notches of the platesand the grooves thereof moved to receive the edges v of the plates therein, said sleeves being sus` tained on the hinge by the pintle thereof,V said sleeves having their confronting edges provided with: interengaging teeth, and
Vspring means surrounding the pintle and eX- erting a tension between one barrel of the hinge and one sleeve for forcing the teeth of the. sleeves into engagement with each other. l
