BOXING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER \VALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVhat Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxing, of which the fo-llowing'is a specification.

This invention relates to boxing for the thread bars of mining drills, and aims primarily to provide a boxing which may be quickly opened and closed to permit of the quick adjustment of the thread bar therein.

A further aim of the invention is to pro vide a box of the type so constructed that it may be quickly opened and closed without the use of tools.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the boxing embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view therethrough, the boxing being closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the latch for the boxing open and illustrating one of the sections of the boxing swung open, in dotted. lines. Fig. A is a perspective view of the latch pin of the boxing.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

In the drawing, one section of the boxing is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and the other by the numeral 2, the two sections being formed with interfitting ears 3 through which is permanently passed a hinge-pin 4, the sections being in this manner so connected that the section 2 may be swung open to permit of the quick adjustment of the thread-bar of the drill in the boxing. The section 1 is provided, at opposite points, with trunnions 5 which fit in bearings in the frame of the drill. The sections 1 and 2 are interiorly threaded as at 6, as is usual, to fit the threads of the thread bar.

For a purpose to be presently explained, the section 1 of the boxing is formed or provided in that side opposite its hinged side, with a pair of upstanding lugs 7 having shoulders 8, at their upper ends. The

section 2 of the boxing is formed at the corresponding side with notches 9 which permit of the section 2 being swung upon the hinge-pin A without interfering with the lugs 7.

The section 2 is formed at each end, with an ear 10 having an aperture 11. A pin 12 is formed with a flattened side 13 and with reduced ends 14 which are rotatably fitted in the apertures in the said ears. A fingerpiece 15 projects at an angle from the flattened side 13 of the pin 12 and may be manipulated to rotate the pin. When the pin is so positioned that its flat side 13 is presented toward the lugs, the section 2 of the boxing may be swung open and closed without interference on the part of the lugs, but when the pin is rotated to present its rounded surface to the lugs, it will bind beneath the shoulders 8 of the lugs and the sections of the boxing will be held closed. It is preferable to arrange the finger-piece 15 so that when the pin is in position to hold the sections closed, this finger-piece will rest flat against the section 2 and will not be liable to he accidentally engaged and moved while the drill is in operation.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A boxing for drills comprising a pair of sections hinged together at one side and provided at the opposite free sides with lat eral extensions having flat meeting faces, one of the sections having spaced lugs rising from its free edge provided with inwardly projecting shoulders at their upper ends, and the other section having notches in its free edge whereby it may clear said shoulders as it is swung to open or closed position, ears on the upper side of the lateral extension of said last-mentioned section, a pin journaled in said ears and having a plano-convex cross section whereby it may engage under the inwardly projecting shoulders or be turned to clear the same, and a fingenpiece projecting ang'ularly from the flat face of said pin.
