IMPROVEMENT m LAMPS.
y Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 146,525, dated January 20, 1874 4application filed July 25, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. GmEoN, of the town of Centre Post Office, county of Howard, State of Indiana, have invented a Lamp, of which the following is a specifica tion:
The nature of the invention consists in the application of a pieee of solid tripoli to the burner of a lamp, for the purpose and in the way hereinafter described.
Figure l of the accompanying drawing is a 'vertical sectional view` in the plane of the wick-` sheaths; Fig. 2, a vertical section transverse to the wick-sheaths, Fig. 3, a disk of solid tripol, hereinafter described.
This burner is to be constructed with two short Wiek-sheaths, the one coming up from the bottom, and the other conveying a wick to the blaze, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. a of Fig. 3 is a disk of solid tripoli, cut to t in the burner between the two Wiek-sheaths, as shown at a of Figs. l and 2. c is a metallic spring, of any convenient construction, which is arranged to press a part ofthe lower end of the upper wick against the tripoli disk a. The lower wick is brought through the wieksheath c, and pressed up slightly against the bottom of the tripoli disk a, as shown in Fig. 1. `All the various parts of the device to be as represented in the drawing.
It will then he found that, if the lower end of the lower Wick be immersed in the oil, the capillary attraction of lthis lower wick will draw the oil up to the tripoli disk. by its capillary attraction, will carry the oil to the lower end of the upper wick, which will, in its turn, convey the oil to the flame. Non', if the tripoli disk a be fitted in tight, s0 that it will not leak Haine around its edges, the lamp will be found to be 011e of exceeding safety, for no fire can pass, through the tripoli` and also that it gives a clear steady light.
I claim- The tripoli disk a, combined with the lampburner, and arranged between the two sections of the Wick, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing speeiiieation I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, 1873.
