Any time it is desired, or should become necessary to take up endplay of the bearing balls 5, which may develop or increase with the use of'the machine, this may be done merely by turning up or tightening the screw-threaded attaching stud 8 on the can riage bar 18. *VVhen'the attaching screw or stud 8 is tightened on the carriage-bar 18, the yieldable plug or collar 1 1 will yield to permit the bearing cones 3 and 1 to be drawn more'closely together, for taking up the end play of the bearing balls 5, the conespacing member 13 at the same time yield: ing and becoming flattened or reduced in thickness. It is to he noted that the yielding ofthe yieldable cone-retaining plug or collar 1a is facilitated bythe presence of the slight recess or countersink 16 which is provided in the rear or outer face of the cone 4;, outward from the yieldable plug or collar lL.
Preferably, the ring or annulus 15 from which the cone-retaining plug or collar 14 is formed, should be of somewhat softer material thanthe cone-spacer 13, so as toavoid jamming the cones 8 and 4 too tightly against the balls 5 when pressure is brought to bear on this ring 15 to form therefrom the unifying or cone-retaining plug let.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, 1 claim: 7 V

A typewriter-carriage supporting and guiding roller-device, comprising a carriage supporting roller, apair of spaced bearing cones, bearing balls retaining the roller upon the cones, thecones having countersunk recesses at the outer-sides thereof, a stud upon which the cones aremou'nted and having a cone-retaining head received into the recess in one of'the cones and having a screwthreade-d stem projecting beyond the outer face of the other cone ,ancl a cone-retaining soft metal collar in therecess in the latter cone and pressed into engagement with the screw-threaded stem for combining all of stud, the yieldability' of the, "soft metal collar providing for taking up s lay-er the'bearing balls by tightening the screw-threaded stud on the typewriter-carriagev 10. A typewriter-carriage supporting and guiding roller-device, comprising a carriagesupporting roller a pair of spaced bearing cones, bearing balls retaining the roller upon the cones, a yieldable cone-spacer interposed between the cones, the cones having similar countersunk recesses at the outer sides thereof, said recesses having abrupt side walls, a stud upon which the cones and cone-spacer are mounted and having a cone-retaining head received into the recess in one of the cones and having a screw-threaded stem projecting beyond the outer face of the other cone and a soft metal plug in the recess in the latter cone and pressed into engaging relation with the screw-threads of the stem and into gripping relation with the side walls of the recess for combining all of said parts to form a unit which may be attached to or detached from the typewriter-carriage by means of the screw-threaded stud, the
yieldability of the plug and 01 the conespacer providing for taking up play of the bearing balls by tightening the screw-threaded stud on the typewriter-carriage.
11. A typewritencarriage supporting and guiding roller-device, comprising a carriagesupporting roller provided with an interior ball-receiving groove, a pair of bearing forming cones co-operating with said groove to form a raceway, a set of bearing balls in the raceway, a screw upon which said,
cones are mounted and having a retaining head at the outer side of one of said cones, the other one of said cones being provided with a countersunk recess in the outer side thereof surrounding the screw-threaded stem of said screw, and a soft metal cone-retaining collar within said recess and'pressed into engaging relation with the screwthreads of said screw for combining all of said as sembled parts to form a unitary device which may be attachedto or detached from the typewriter-carriage by means of said screw.

A typewriter-carriage supporting and guiding roller-device comprising a carriage supporting roller provided with an interior ball-receiving groove, a pair of bearingfornnng cones co-operating with said groove to form a raceway, a set of hearing balls in the raceway, said cones having similar countersunk recesses in the outer sides thereof, screw upon which said cones are meant ed and having a retaining head received into the recess in one of said cones and having a screw-threaded stem projecting beyond the outer face of the other of said cones, an annular cone-r taining solt rnetal plug within said remainingrecess and pressed into engaging relation with the SCI-J\J1lii1IGLLilS of the stem or said screw, and rieldahle concspacer surrounding the stem of the screw between said cones, all of said assembled parts forming a unitary device held together by said screw and plug and which may be at tached to or detached from the typewritercarriage by means of said screw, said yield able plug and yieldable spacer providing 1 01 taking up play of the bearing balls by t' 'hl ening said screw on the typewriter-carriage.

In a typewriter-mirriage supporting and guiding roller-device, the method oi retaining a pair of bearing cones upon the screw-threaded stem of a headed attaching stud, consisting in countersinlring a soft metal collar for said stein into the adjacent cone, and then forcing the material of said soft metal collar into iuterengaging locking relation with the screw-threads of said stem.
14. In a typewriter-carriage supporting and guiding rollerdevice, the method oifretaining a pair of bearing cones upon the screw-threaded stem of a headed attaching stud, consisting in sliding an annular sott i'netal plug over the screw-threaded stem and inserting it into a recess in theudjacent cone, and then bringing pressure to bear upon said plug to expand the plug to it in the recess and at the same time to contract the opening in the plug to rorce the soft metal of the plug inward into inter-engaging locking engagement with the screw-threads of the stem.
