Description

P. T. c. DUMAIS FASTENER Fild Sent. 18. 1922 rnnn-*r1ionns oonoonD nmrars, or HULL,- QUEBEC, CANADA:
- FASTENER.
Application filed September 3.8, 1822. Serial No, 588,982.
To aZZ wjzomz't may conce7% Be it known that 1, PAUL THOMAS CON- oonn DUMAIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Hull, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fasteners, or loeking device for packages of merchandise and the like, and the objects of the invention are to provide flexible means of this kind that can be locked on itself to seal railroad cars, and similarly locked to secure packages of merchandise.
Further objeots are to provide a simple economically constructed and effective fas- -tening deviee o-f this character that can be readily manufactured and marketed in large quantities.
Vith the foregoing and other objecte in view, the invention consiste essentially in the improved construction hereinafler described in detail in the specification and illustrated by the drawings that form part of the same.
Referring to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding Parts in eaoh figure, and in Whioh:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the fastener in open position adapted for securing packages of marchandise and the like.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention adapted for packages with tag attached, in open position.
Figure 3 is a detailed view of the baggage alstener in folded position, showing the tag string wound therearonnd.
in the drawings:
A represents the fastener adapted for use with packages of merchandise and designed to be folded on itself and to look over the eord or string having a tag attached thereto at one end, andthe other end engaging With the body of the fastener as shown in Figure 2. The astener A comprises a strip of flexible metal 10 having formed integral there- With at each end the male and female looking members 11 and 12, and provided intermediate of said members in the strip portion with a tongued member 14:, adapted,
as above mentioned and as shoWn in Figure 2, to engage with the eord or string of a baggage tag.
The male member 11 s formed with a hed or eonical top spaced from the base and dsighed to'engage With a: spring 15 with which is engaged the end of a tag string, the string being thon wound around, as shoWn in Figure 3, the body portion of the fastener, which in turn is folded on it self so as t0 engage the member 11 with the member 12, and thereby locking the string thereon which has already heen folded therearound.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that I have invented a very simple and efi'ective locking fastener, particularly adapted for the purposes for which it is designed, mamely, the securing O packages of merchandise, mail bags, and baggage generally.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently en widely difierent embodiments of my 1nvention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained' in the accompanying specine fication anddrawings shall be interpreted as illustratve and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. A device of the charaoter described comprising a metal strip having the onde formed to provide locking members and provided intermediately of said locking ends with a ont ont tongued member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a strip of flexible metal formed at each end With buttonshaped engaging members designed on the strip being folded on itself to look the ends together, a tongued mmber formed in the strip between said end locking members.
3. A device of the class described comprising a strip of flexible metal intermodiately outto form a tongue adapted to engage With a string or the like, the ends of said strip being designed to form, respe tively, a voonicalheaded engaging member and a spring-actuated receiving member whereoy on the stripbeing folded said ends are locked.
4. A flexible metal strip having its ends formed to provide an engaging member at one and and a reeeiving member at the other With tag seu1ing means, said strip hzwng formed at the ends and integml therewith anengagng member witha 'c011icuLShaped hzzd spaced from the base and a 1eceving member with an aperture chemin surrounded by' a cylindrical spring, respective1y, said members being designed on the strip' beng folded on tself t0 engage with one another to look the strip.
In witness Wherof I ba e hereunto set 20 my hand.
' PAUL TEI-M'S CONCORD DUMAIS.
