Be it known that I, ALBINE LEE THORN- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Cuffs, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to fastening devices for cuffsor the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of this character whichcannot be accidentally detached from the cuff although adapted to be easily and readily applied to or detached from the cuff by the person using the device.

Another object is to provide a fastening device for cufi's having these advantages and being at the same time ofextremely simple and durable construction and susceptible of manufacture from materials and with facilities ordinarily available and yet having an ornamental and attractive appearance.

Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrange ment of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accom anying drawings forming part of this speci 'cation and in which:

Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the fastening device is designated generally at and preferably is constructed of a single piece of wire sheet metal or the like, the metal being of sufficient resiliency to admit of bending or shaping the fastener to its final form as will be hereinafter more fully described and at the same time presenting when complete a substantially rigid fastening device, the parts of which are adapted to be flexed only when subjected to considerable pressure by the person using the device. The metal from which'the fastening device is constructed is bent or formed to provide a pair of substantially U-shap'ed clasps or cuff engaging devices, designated at 11 and 12, respectively. The clasp 11 includes a body portion 13 and legs 14' and 15 and similarly the clasp 12 includes a body portion 16 and legs 17 and 18. The legs 1 1 and 17 are connected by a curved connecting and retaining bar 19 which is formed integral with the legs 14 and 17 and which serves to connect the clasps and also to retain the fastening device in position and. prevent accidental displacement thereof, as will pres-' ently appear. The ends of the legs 15 and 18 are provided with ornamental heads or knobs and 21, if desired.

In Figure Ithe fastening device is shown applied to the cuff and referring to this figure the cuff is designated at C, and the ends of the cuff at E and E, these ends being provided as usual with button holes 13 and B, respectively. When the fastening device is applied to the cuff the clasp 12 is engaged with the end E, the body portion 16 being engaged with the but ton hole B and the body portion 13 being engaged with the button h-ole B and the arms 17 of the clasp 12 engaging the outer side of the cuff end E. while the leg 18 of this same clasp member engages the inner side of this cuff E so as to completely ex tend around and embrace this cuff end. Similarly the arm 1 1 is engaged with the outer side of the cuff end E and the arm 15 engages the inner side of this cuff end, and these legs together with the body portion 13 extend entirely around this cuff end so as. to completely embrace the same. \Vith this clasping action on part of the clasp 11 and 12 together with the action of the curved retaining and connecting bar 19 accidental displacement of the fastening device is precluded for it cannot be disposed angular-1y due to the action of the bar 19 and it can-- not be displaced outwardly due to the clasps 11 and 12. It is to be noted that the legs or arms 15 and 18 are deflected in opposite 7 but also away from each other. This formation of the arms and Clasps not only serves to render the fastening device 111016'00111- pact and better adapted for association with the cuff but also enhances the fastening or securing action of the clasps.

Referring to Figure 5 the invention is shown as adapted and used with a cuff having its ends lapped, the lapped ends of the cuff being designated at L and L, and the fastening device includes a straight bar or body portion which extends across the outer faces of the lapped portions of the cuff. The ends of the body portion 30 have integrally formed therewith offset and laterally deflected prongs 31 and 32, the prongs being deflected in opposite directions. As stated these prongs are offset fronithe bar or body portion 30 and they lie on the inner face or side of the cuff and have gripping engagement with the cuff to provide an effective fastening device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A fastening device for cuffs comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped members, the outer legs of the U-shaped members being connected, and the inner logs thereof being oppositely deflected, and heads (arricd by the outer ends of the deflected legs.

2. A fastening device for 01 constructed of a single piece of metal coin lgising a pair of clasps adapted to completely encircle the ends of the cuff and a combined connecting and retaining bar extending between, said clasps. y

3. A fastening device for cuffs in which the ends are lapped and including a straight bar constituting abody portion and oppo sitely deflected prongs offset from the body portion. V

4. A fastening device for cuffs comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped members, the outer legs of the lleshaped members being connected and adapted to extend across the outer ends of'the cufisythe inner legs being oppositely deflected with respect to each other and each inner leg being egg? tended toward the outer leg of the U-shaped member of which is part whereby the legs of each U-shaped member grip between them the ends of the cuff to .ivhich the fastening device is attached." 1
