HERBERT SACHS HIRSGH, OF NEWARK, NEVJ JERSEY.
COLLAPSIBLE DISPLAY BOX.
Application filed January 13, 1922. Serial No. 528,973.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T'IERBERT SACHS Hrnsorr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to collapsible boxes for packing, shipping and displaying merchandise, said boxes being made from blanks of sheet material and having covers which may be folded under the boxes to form inclined supports therefor.
- The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction of a box of the above character whereby the box and its cover will be very strong and durable, a novel hinge connection between the cover and box and a folding display panel for the box being provided as well as interlocking means for preventing the box and cover from collapsing in use.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents the closed box in perspective.
Fig. 2 represents the opened box in perspective.
Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective, looking in the direction of the arrow marked w, on Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective, looking at the hinged end of the opened box with the box slightly separated from the cover.
Fig. 5. represents an inside plan view of the cover.
Fig. 6 represents a vertical longitudinal central section through the closed box.
Fig. 7 represents a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line VII-VII of'Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 represents a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line VIITVIII of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9 represents a plan view of the out and scored blank on a somewhat smaller scale.
The collapsible box is made from a blank of sheet material, cut and scored to form a strong and rigid box structure having its bottom, ends and sides strongly reinforced, and a cover for the said box having its ends reinforced, the cover top being connected to the main bottom of the box by a panel substantially equaling the height of the box, said connecting panel being preferably foldable between the cover and box when the cover is turned back to form a support for the opened box, for display purposes.
The main bottom of the box is denoted by 1 and the folded outer and inner side panels by 2 and 3 along one side of the box, and by 4 and 5 along the opposite side of the box. The false bottom of the box is denoted by 6.
At the free end of the box the bottom 1 is provided with the outer end panel 7, and the false bottom 6 is provided with the inner end panel 8. The panel 7 is provided with wings 9 and 10 extending at right angles thereto between the side panels 2, 3 and 4, 5 respectively.
At the hinged end of the box the side panel 3 is provided with the outer end panel 11 having a wing 12 extending at right angles thereto between the side panels 4, 5, which wing has a folded flap 13. The false bottom 6 is provided with an inner end panel 14 from which extends a display panel 15. The edge 16 of the flap 13 coacts with the slightly projecting edge 17 of the inner end panel 14 to lock the several parts of the box against unintentional displacement.
The continuous top'of the cover is denoted by 18 and it is substantially the length and width of the box. This cover top 18 is provided with side panels 19 and 20 extending the length of the top, said side panels being provided at the free end of the cover with wings 21 and 22 extending toward each other at right angles to the side panels 19 and 20.
The cover top 18 at the free end of the cover is provided with a folded end panel 23 which embraces the wings 21, 22 and which is held in its folded position against unintentional displacement by a tongue 24 struck from the cover top.
The side panels 19 and 20 of the cover are deepened to substantially the height of the box at the hinged end of the cover and they are there provided with wings 25 and 26 which extend toward each other at right angles to the side panels 19 and20, to form the panels at the hinged end of the cover, which panels are secured against unintentional displacement by a folded tongue out from the main bottom 1 of the box and from the connecting panel to be hereinafter described, said folded tongue having a portion 27 exthe box.
tending along the outside of the wings and 26, a portion 28 extending along the inside of the said wings and a portion 29 extending along the inner face of the cover top 18; a tongue 30 which is struckfrom the cover top serving to overlap said portion 29 to hold the parts at this point rigidly in their assembled position and against unin tentional displacement.
The cover top 18 is connected at its hinged end to the hinged end of the main bottom 1 of the box by a panel 31 of a length substantially the heighth of the box, which panel lays along the hinged end of the cover when the cover is closed. This connecting panel is preferably foldable, as shown, to permit it to be folded into the space between the cover and the box when the cover is turned back under the box to form a support therefor.
When the cover is closed, the display panel 15, hereinbefore referred to, will be caused to occupy a position under the cover.
lVhen the cover is opened and turned back under the box to form an inclined support therefor, the display panel may be raised into a display position, such as that illustrated in Fig. 2.
In the box above described, the printed matter may be located on one side only of It will be seen that the cover not only forms a rigid and attractive support for the box of substantially the same length as the box, but that it also spaces the box from the surface on which the cover rests, giving the box a prominent display position. It will be notedthat the empty boxes may be shipped in a collapsed condition and when filled may be used for shipping and after wards for display purposes. The blank is so formed that when the box is set up therefrom, the box will be very substantially reinforced and capable of withstanding the severe usage to which these boxes are subjected to by the repeated opening and closing of the same.
It is evident that various changes may be made in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
hat I claim is 1. A'box having a cover and a hinge panel connecting the cover to the bottom of the box and adapted to lie along the end of the cover when the cover is closed.
2; A box having a cover and a hinge panel connecting the cover to the bottom of the box-and adapted to lie along the end of the cover when the cover is closed, the hinged end of the box being provided with a display panel arranged to be folded within the box when the cover is closed.
A box having a cover and a foldable hinge panel connecting the cover to the bot tom of the box and adapted to lie along the end of the cover when the cover is closed and to be folded between the box and cover when the cover is turned back under the box to form a support therefor.

8. A collapsible box and a cover formed from a blank of sheet material, said cover extending substantially the length and breadth of the box, and a foldable hinge panel connecting the cover top with the box bottom, said panel being adapted to lie along the end of the cover when the cover is closed and to be folded, between the box and cover when the cover is opened and folded back under the box to form a support therefor, the hinged end of the box being provided with a display panel arranged to be folded within the box when the cover is closed.
