Application filed May 18,
To all 207mm may concern:
Be it known that Gnoncn TV. Wilson, a citizen of the United States. residing at Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State ofKentucky, has invented. certain new and usefulImprovements in Fence Structures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fence structures and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is of a portable type and which. may beassembled in working position without the necessity of posts or kindred supporting means.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fence structure whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to 'describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating a portable fence constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating adjacent sections comprised in my improved fence structure;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of one of the connecting or coupling members com prised in my improved fence;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of one of the plates comprised in the device illu trated in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the second plate comprised in the device as illustrated in Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved fence structure comprlses a plurality of separable sections S of desired dimensions but in practice I find it best to have each of said sections substantially one rod in length.
Each of the sections S, as herein disinsane entrant? @FFH.
1922. Serial N0. 560,58.
closed, comprises a metallic frame 1 with which is associated a wire fabric 2.
In assembling the fence the adjacent sections S are disposed in angular relation whereby the structure is effectively maintained in working position without the necessity of posts or kindred supports and in a manner whereby the fence structure is readily portable. Adjacent sections are detachably connected by the coupling mem bers or clamps C, said coupling members or clamps permitting the adjacent sections to have relative swinging movement in order that said adjacent sections may be arranged in the preferred angular relation and at the same time the coupling i'nembers or clamps C hold the adjacent sections against separation. l
Each of the coupling members or clamps C comprises two elongated plates .3 and. l, the central portion of the plate 3 having an elongated slot 5 of such length. to permit the insertion therethrough of the second section 4 when the side faces of the sections 4: are disposed substantially in parallelism with the longitudinal e lges of the opening 5.
The central portion of the plate t is provided in its opposite longitudinalmargins with notches or recesses 6 which, when said plate 4: is given a one-fourth turn after being inserted through the opening 5. receives the portions of the plate 3 defining the longi tudinal margins of the opening 5. By this means the pl: tes 3 and l are effectively held in assembled relation but in a manner whereby said plates 3 and 4: may be readily separated as the occasions of practice require. The notches or recesses 6 are elongated so that the plates 3 and 4 may have relative swinging movement to permit the end'portions of said assembled plates 3 and 4 to receive therebetween the adjacent end members 7 in sections S. In order that the adjacent' ends 7 of the sections S may be ef fectively engagedby the end portions of the plates 3 and 4 the end portions of said plates 3 are provided with inwardly facing jaws 8 which receive therebetween and hold, when the coupling member or clamp C is in applied position, said end members 7 of the sections S. An end portion of one of the members, as 3, is provided adjacent the longitudinal margin thereof with an opening 9 which alines with an opening 10 in the adjacent end portion of the second plate Cil 4 and this opening 10 is provided with an entrance slot 11 open at a longitudinal edge of theiplate 4:. i
T denotes-a tie member substantially U- shaped in form and the intermediate, portion' 12 of the tie member T is disposed through the opening 9. A side arm 14 of the tie member T is flattened so that when the plates 3 and l of acoupling member or clamp C are applied. the same will readily pass through the entrance slot 1'1v with the intermediate portion of the tie member, T
disposed through the opening 10. After the portion 12 of the tie member T has been properly engaged within the opening 10 the tie member'xT is turned or swung in ,a direction to bring the arm liout of register with the entrance slot 10 and preferably withYsaid' side arm 14 downwardly vdirected.- As the intermediate portion 12 ofthe tie' member T is ofadiameter greater-than the width of the entranceslot 11 the plates 8 and tare effectively held against relative swinging movement and at the same time maintained in locking engagement with the end members 7 of the sections S;
The couplingmembers or clamps C serve to effectively maintain the adjacent-sections vention is susceptible of some change and S'connected and at the same time permit said sect ons to have desired relative swingmg movement.
-From the foregoing description it is thought to be ObVlOllSthztb a fence structure constructed in accordance with my in vention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and 'facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it; will also be obvious that my inmodification without departing from the principles and spirit thereofand for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
Iclaimr V l 1. A coupling 'member comprising two elongatedplates, one of said plates having an elongated slot, the secondplate being insertable through said slot, said second plate having a marginal slot iJOi'IGCGlVG a portion of the first plate j defining the slot when 1 said plates are in overlying relation, the outer ends of the plates having opposed jaws, and means co-acting; with adjacent ends of the plates for holding the same tie member supported by an end portion of one of' the plates and detachably engaged with the second platewhen said plates are in overlying relation forholding'said plates against relative separating movement,
- 3. -A coupling member comprising two elongatedplatesone of said plates having an elongated slot, the second plate being in sertable through said slot, saidsecond plate having a marginal-slot to receive av portion 0f the'firstplate' defining the slot whensaid plates are" in overlying relation, the outer ends of the plates having opposed jaws, each of said plates at-adjacent end portions having openings, one of said openings having 1 an entrance slot in communication therewith, and a substantially U-shaped tie memher. having its intermediate portion engageable through the openings, sa1d1ntermediate portion of the tie member being of a diameter greaterthan the Widthof the entrance slot of the opening in one of the plates.
i. A coupling member "comprising two sertable through said slot, said secondplate having a marginal. slot to receive a portion of the first plate defining-the slot when said elongated plates, one of said plates havingx; an elongated slot, the second plate being inplates are in overlying relation, the router ends of the vplates having opposed jaws, each of said plates at adjacent end portions having openings, one of said openingshaving an entrance slot in communication there with, a substantially U-shaped tie member having its intermediate portion-engageable through the openings, said'intennediate portion of the tie member being of a diameter greater than the width of the entrance slot of the opening in one of the plates a side L arm of the tie member bG1I1g lI1S (1-lftlbl6" through said entrance slot; 7 g i v Intestimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. v
