Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 21, TQT'F.
Application filed December 14, 1915. Serial No. 66,706.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waukegan, county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Non-Climbable 'Fences, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to improvements in nonclimhable fences, and has for its object the provision of a simple and eflicient construction of this character which is capable of economical production.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fence guard member,
Fig. 2, a side view of the same shown partially in section,
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4., a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2, 4 Fig. 4*, a detail section illustrating means for efiecting a tight connection between a fence guard member and a fence post,
Fig. 5, a top plan view of a modified form of construction, Fig. 6, a side view of the same shown partially in section,
Fig. 7, an enlarged section taken on line 77 of Fig. 6, and I Fig. 8, an enlarged view taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a fence guard member 9 made in channel form and secured in position by means of a depending stem 10 adapted to fit within the top of a tubular fence post 11, said guard member being arranged in inclined position with its open side down, as shown. As indicated in Fig. 4 the stem 10 and guard member 9 are provided with a slot 10 at one side for the reception of a wedge 11, this construcution being provided to effect a tight connection in case the fence post 11 is somewhat larger than the stem 10, as indicated. The upper or closed side of the guard member 9 is provided with a plurality of notches 12 adapted to receive ordinary tically elongated opening 16 is provided at the, base of guard member 9 immediately above post 11, the sides of said opening being beveled, as shown, to facilitate the positioning of the top rail of a fence therein in inclined position, as is necessary where the fence is built over hillyv ground.
In use, the fence posts 11 are set in the usual manner and guard members 9 secured in the tops thereof projecting laterally from the line of the fence. Then the fence wires or strands 13 are stretched between the guard members 9 and placed in the notches 12. Then locking wires 14: are inserted in the channel -members 9 between the wire strands 13 and the upper or closed side of guard member 9, the hook 15 on each looking member 14 being bent around the uppermost wire 13, as shown.
In the modified form of construction, two guard members 17 are provided arranged at an angle to each other and supported on a suitable bracket 17 adapted to be positioned on the top of a fence post with the guard members projecting laterally from each side of the fence line. These guard members are also in the form of inclined open channels having their open sides down and are provided with notches 18 in their upper sides to receive the fence wires or strands 19. A vertical notch 20 is also provided at the apex of the guard members 17 for the reception of the topmost wire 21 of the fence. A locking member 22 consistin of a Wire having a hook 23 at its upper en is inserted in each of the guard members 17 as indicated with the hook 23 engaging over the wire 21, notches 24 being provided in the closed sides of the guard members to permit of. theinsertion of said locking members. The fence is assembled substantially as before, but the hooks 23 are not bent around the uppermost wire 21 since this Wire is inaccessible. This construction furnishes .ble of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do "not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction setforth, butdesire to avail myself of such variations andmodifications as come within the .scope .of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
"1. The-combination with a-fence post, of a fence guard secured to the top thereof in -aninclincd position, said guard consisting of an inclined fchannel member'arranged with its open side down and provided with notches in its closed side to receive fence wires; and a locking member inserted in said channel between said wires and said notches, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a fence post, of a fence guard secured to the top thereof in an inclined position, said guard consisting of a channel member arranged with its open side down and provided with notches in its closed side to receive fence Wires; and a wire inserted in said channel member between said fence wiresand said notches, the upper ,end of said inserted wire being provided with a hookengaging -the'uppermost of said (fence wires, substantiallyas described.
111 "testimony whereof I have signed my name to (this specification in-the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
