H. S. SCHMIDT COMBINED DUST CONVEYER AND ASH SIFTER Filed April 5, 1923 Patented May .15, 192 15.
We... watts earner COYIIBINED DUST CONVEYER AND ASH SIFTER.
Application filed. April 5,
To all or he m it may concern Be it known that l, HENRY S. SCHMIDT, a resident of Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoining and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Dust Conveyors and Ash Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined dust conveyer and ash sifter and one object is the provision of means for use in connection with the pipe or flue of a furnace for household or other use, which will convey the dust and ashes into a suitable receptacle and thus provide a convenient and useful device which will collect the dust or ashes and prevent the escape thereof into the cellar.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means which will convey and collect the dust and dirt and which will provide an ash sifter in association with the conveying and collecting means to provide a complete useful and economical device.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means of the character and for the purpose stated which can be produced at such a low price as to make its use highly desirable and to. provide a thoroughly efficient and practical article of this character.
To obtain the desired object my invention consists of a dust conveyer embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service substantially as described I and claimed herein, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete dust conveyer, and
Fig, 2 represents a view partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the flaring hood of my conveyer raised and retained in elevated position.
Figure 3 represents a top plan view of the ash sifter forming a. part of my invention, and
Figure 4 represents a side elevation of the band in which the ash sifter is mounted and is capable of reciprocation.
My dust and ash collector is particularly adapted for use in connection with the flue or pipe A, which leads from the furnace, and is provided with the removable cap or 1923. Serial No. 630,039.
stopper B, for its open horizontal end, and is further provided with the depending discharge branch C, said branch being provided preferably with a bayonet slot D, adapted to be engaged-by the damper E, fitting in the receiving pipe F, of the flaring hood G, said hood being provided with a door H, and with a flanged ring J.
Against the lower side of said flanged ring J, snugly fits the annular bead K, of the band L, whose lower portion M, fits snugly in the beaded or rounded mouth N, of the ash can or receiver 0, said band having a bead P, fitting against the beaded mouth of said ash can.
The band L, is provided with a brace or cross-piece Q, upon which at R, is pivoted the ash sifter S, having an operating handle 1, guided and movable in a slot U, of the band L.
The operation of my conveyer is so obviously apparent from the description and drawing that detailed statement thereof is deemed unnecessary, and I would state that the dust from the pipe or flue discharges into the flaring hood and thence to the ash can, or the ashes from the fire pit of the furnace may be thrown through the door of the flaring hood into said hood to the ash can, thus in either case the dust or ashes is delivered and disposed of without creating any dust, and thus avoiding the nuisance arising therefrom, and also the ash sifter can be easily operated to sift the ashes and save any coal which might be thrown away.
The dust conveyer herein shown and described can be produced at a low enough price to make its installation in households highly desirable and will provide a thoroughly etficient and practical article of this character.
I claim:
1. A dust conveyer of the character and for the purpose stated, consisting of a horizontally disposed. pipe or flue having an open end.a removable cap for said open end, a depending outlet branch, a collecting hood having an upwardly extending branch entering said outlet branch, a damper in said branch, a door for collecting hood, a flanged ring below the door in said collecting hood, an ash sifter having its mouth formed with a head to fit tight against the underside of said flanged ring, and an ash receiver fitting upon ,sald ash slfter.
2. A dust conveyer and ash Sifter, Consist mg of a pipe or flue a collecting hood havcross bar in said hand, anash sifter pivoted on said bar, and a handle carried by said 10 ash Sifter and projecting through the slot in the band for oscillating said ashisifter.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affiX my signature.
HENRY s. SCHMIDT v
