T 0 all 10 ham it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. BARNES, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of Henry, in the county of Marshall, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conductors for Disposing of Fumes Arisingfrom Cooking Utensils, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a conductor for attachment to stove pipes, and through the medium of which the fumes arising from cooking utensils may be delivered into the stove pipes instead of circulating into the room in which the cooking stove or range is used. The invention has for its object to provide a conductor of this kind having a mouth, which may be located above a cooking utensil and which is so constructed that its mouthpiece may be raised and lowered to suit cooking utensils of different sizes, and also so constructed as to provide for the mouthpiece being adjusted to various positions according to the locations of cooking utensils on the stove or range top.

Fig. II is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of the conductor.
Fig. III is a top view of the mouthpiece of the conductor and the elbow immediately above it, with the conductor pipe shown in cross section taken on line IIIIII, Fig. II.
In the drawings A designates a cooking range and B a stove pipe leading from said range. In said stove pipe is a T joint 6 to which my fume conductor may be attached.
The fume conductor may be composed of any suitable number of sections of pipe and preferably includes an elbow 1 secured to the stove pipe T section, and to which the remainder of the conductor is so secured as to locate it approximately vertically above the top of the stove. The fume conductor includes an upper pipe section 2 and a lower pipe section 3 telescopically fitted to each other, so that the lower section may be raised and lowered relative to the upper section for the purpose of lengthening or shortening the conductor as desired. Suitable means to be hereinafter described is provided for adjustably connecting the lower section to the upper section,

4 designates the mouthpiece of my fume conductor, which is joined to the lower pipe and deliver fumes therefrom into the pipe of the conductor, which is much smaller than the mouthpiece. The funnel-shaped mouthpiece 4; is preferably so shaped as to be eccentrically secured to the lower end of the fume conductor pipe, in order that the mouthpiece will extend laterally in one direction from the pipe as compared to its extension in the opposite direction, whereby said mouthpiece may serve to cover a cooking utensil considerably offset from the lower end of the conductor pipe withoutthe mouthpiece obstructing the top of the stove or range to as great an extent as it would if the mouthpiece were of conical form.
The mouthpiece 4 is preferably secured to an elbow pipe section 5 swiveled at 6 to the lower section 3 of the conductor pipe. This elbow serves to position the mouthpiece laterally relative to the conductor pipe above it, and the elbow, being swiveled to the pipe 7 by which it is supported, may be readily swung around the axis of the pipe section 3,
as indicated by full and dotted lines, Fig. I, to locate the mouthpiece of the conductor over a cooking vessel, irrespective of the location of said vessel on the stove top. suitable handle 7 is preferably provided for convenience in turning the elbow 5 and the mouthpiece supported thereby.
The means for supporting the lower pipe section 3 of the fumeconductor and the parts carried thereby comprises a catch 8, preferably in the form of a spring tongue, which is rigidly secured to the upper pipe section 2 and is provided at its lower endwith a lip 9. A rack 10 suitably secured to the lower pipe section 3 is engaged by the tongue of said rack 8 and said rack, being provided with a plurality of teeth with which the tongue may engage, the lower section 3 may be raised and lowered to any de sired degree and be held in adjusted position by the engagement of the tongue of the catch with any one of the teeth of the rack 10. At the sides of'the rack 10 are guards 11, extending outwardly from the pipe section 3 and between which the catch 8 is confined. Said guards serve to form a guideway in which the catch 8 moves during vertical adjustment of the lower pipe section 3, and
prevent accidental disengagement of the catch from the rack 10.
It Will be readily apparent that when the mouthpiece 4c of my fume conductor is in open communication with the stove pipe B, the draft in said stove pipe Will be communicated to my fume conductor and the fumes arising from a cooking utensil located beneath the mouthpiece will be effectively drawn through the fume conductor and delivered into the stove pipe, instead of circulating into the room, and all fumes, together with offensive odor, therein are readily disposed of.
A damper 12 is preferably located in the fume conductor; this damper is opened when the fume conductor is in use and may be closed when the conductor is not in use, so that the draft in the stove pipe will, not be lessened by the fume conductor remaining in communication with the stove pipe.
I claim:
A fume conductor of the character described comprising a mouth-piece, an upper pipe section, a lower pipe section telescopically fitted to said upper pipe section, one of said pipe sections having a rack bar fixed thereto, said rack bar having vertically extendingparallel guards, the other of said pipe sections having a catch fixed thereto and engaging said rack bar between said guards whereby the sections areheld in adjusted positions, said mouth-piece being eccentric to and pivotally connected to said lower pipe section at a point below said rack .bar and catch, whereby the eccentric mouthpiece may be adjusted on its pivot While the upper and lower pipe sections are in different relative positions.
