H. MOECKER, JR. ET AL DOOR CONSTRUCTION File d Dec. 27. 1921 Patented May 15, 1923. I
- un 're c 'rrs HEN-RY MOECKEB,JRQAND'THEODORE TH TOAMERICANKSTOVE'COMPANY, OF
JERSEY.
OMPSON, or HARVEY, ILLINO S, nssrenon's LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW noon consrnootrioiv.
I I Application filed necemb'erzr, 1921. Serial in. 524,976;
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Constructions, of which the following is a specification referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawing l Our invention relates to improvements in to a construction for doors'for warming ovens orthelike which are provided in connection with gas or coal ranges 1 mestic use. v f y Our invention also relates to an improved door construction whereby the raising and lowering of the same is facilitated.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a door with a hanger and pivot on which the door swings and a counterweight for balancing the door. i I Another objeotof our invention is to provide a swinging door for ovens or the like which will swingupor down and is free from binding-or sticking, asislikely with doors of other constructions. c
A further object of our invention is to i provide a door for ovens can be raised to a position to leave coinpletely unobstructed the door frame opening to allow free access to the interior of-the oven, Another object of our invention is to pro vide a, door which is simple of operation and protects the operator from possible burns substained in handling ahe'ated part of the oven or oven door.
A still further object is to provide an oven of our invention operation. Y
Our invention construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more speoven" provided with my improved door construction, the door being shown in closed position. Fig. 2
oven provided with is an end elevation of a Warming door of my improved in the 5 countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have door constructions and more particularly for do'-.
or the like ivhich door which is cheap and simple of manufacture and efficient in further'consists in the novel construction, the door being showln li-n closcdj position.
Fig; 3 1s an end elevation of a warming oven provided with my door ofimpifo'ved construction, the door being shown in open position. I,
Fig; 4 is a detailperspective View of improved door construction and it'scomponent parts. i i 1 Referring now to the drawings which like parts are designated by similar reference numerals I warming oven which. may be of any desired shape or size and may be builtfas'a complete unit as shown in "the drawings, or can be built into a gas or'coal range as part of the range as is often the case.
The warming oven shown in the drawof the oven about midway between its top throughout the descriptionand wherein wejhave shown a simple apph; cation of "our invent on, A; represents a I and bottom. Above'the bead 5 in the front.
l of the ovenis an opening 6 whichprovldes access into the'lnterior of -the oven.
This opening 6 is approximately the same size as the front 4 of the ovenabove the bead 5, being surrounded on its s des and a small portion not the oven front bottom by the bead. 5; 6 is normally closed top by 4 and on its This opening door 7 having fastened at '9, rearwardly extending hang ers 10 which carry on the inner side or the rear ends 1 1 counterweights 12. *At a point p which is in front of the counterweights 12 15 to which is attached. a handle 1 .6, .As clearly appears the hangers the inner side of the door flanges Sand at a point midway between the door? and the stub shafts 13 and 15 the hangers are bent outwardly as at 17 so; that that" portion of the hangers in the rear of jacent front hanger portions." The bend 17 in the hangers 10 is just suiiicie ntin dis-- tance to make the flange portions 8 of the a. inwardlyextending flange portionsS to which are suitably boltedor and on the outerside of the; hangers 110' we have provlded stub shafts 13 and-14. The stub-shaft 14 is'providedj with squared end in Fig. @015 the drawings 10 of the. door 7 are fastened to the bend l'llies in a. slightly difi'erent plane frt'im -their'ad door he in the same plane asthe rear por A through the opening 6 is obtained, as the I 4. The stub shafts 13 and 15 extend outwardly through the oven sides 1 and the,
handle 16 is mounted upon the squared end 15 of the outwardly extending shaft 14. From the foregoing it will be readily understood that by rotating the handle 16 the door 7 is swung upon its shafts 18 and 14 and that unobstructed entrance to the oven door;,7 can be swung up to a position to lie approximately beneath the oven top 3.
The door 7 will rotate very easily due to the counterweights l2, and after the door hasbeen opened the same will remain in an open position, being held there by the counterweights 12.
In those constructions of oven doors now prevalent the oven doors can not be opened completely to allowan unobstructed entrance ner sides of the oven oven doors of .out departing from to the oven interior, due to the fact that the doors carry handles on their fronts which strike the oven top, which limits the movement of the door and the size into the oven. I I I With an oven door with a handle on its front we have found that the handle becomes very hot and is liable to burn the hands of the operator While with the door handle or operating means of our improved construction the operator runs no risk of burning his hands when swinging the door to an open position.
Attention is also directed to the stub shaft bearings 18 which bear against the inner sides of the oven sides 1 and hold the hangers 10 of the oven door just clear of the-inwalls when the door is being swung. This construction assures that the door will swing easily, and be free from binding or sticking'as' is very likely with other constructions.
Although we have shown the oven door 7 with the door as being fiat it will be readily understood that our construction could be applied to an oven with acurved door withthe spirit of our inven tion. And we also wish it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the application of our construction to oven doors as our 0011- struction can be used in many other places I where swinging doors are desired.
we claim and of the opening I Having thus described our lllJQl'lt-lOIl,Wl12lt desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. The combination with an oven orthe like, of a swinging door with rearwardly ex tending edges, hangers for the door carried by said rearwardly extending edges, stubshafts carried by the hangers intermediate their ends, and means for rotating the door to open the same. 1
2. The combination with'an oven or the like, of a swinging door with rearwardly extending edges, hangers for the ,door carried by the said door edges, and'the end of the hangers adjacent the door in a different plane from their other ends, for thepurpose described. I I
8. The combinationwith an oven door or the like, of a swinging door, hangers for the door, outwardly extending stub shafts carried by the hangers, counter weights carried upon the inner side of the hanger ends,
and means to rotate one of the stub shafts, for the purpose described. I
4C. The combination with an oven door or the like, of a swinging door with rearwardly extending edges, hangers for the door car ried upon the inner side of said door edges, and the ends of the hangers adjacent the door in a different plane from their other ends, jfor the purpose described. I
5. The combination with an oven or the like, of a swinging door provided with hangere, counter weights carried upon the inner face of. the hanger ends, outwardly extending stub shafts carried .by the hangers at a point intermediate the weights, and one ofthe with an operating handle, for the purpose described. I
6. The combination with an oven or the like, of a swinging door, hangers carried by the door, outwardly carried by the outer termediate tending outwardly beyond the oven side, and
means to rotate the said outwardly protrudextending stub. shafts face of the hangers intheir ends, one of said shafts exdoor and the said, said stub shafts ex-.
tending through the oven wall andprovided I door provided with a.
