MATCH BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID B. MACDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in match boxes which are designed to contain matches having a head upon each. of their ends, and the object of my improvement is to provide a match box having means for breaking off the charred end of a match after it has been lighted and used, thus to preserve the remnant clean and to enable the user to dispose of the charred end before replacing the clean remnant in the box, thus preserving the unused matches within the box free from exposure to the risk of becoming soiled by contact with the charred portion of used matches.

I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the match box showing the device attached and in position.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the breaking device.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the hole and surrounding perforations in the outside box.

Fig. 4 is an inside view of a section of the outside box disclosing the perforation and manner of attachment of the breaking device and in dotted lines the position and form of the breaking device when attached.

Fig. 5 is a broken portion of the inner portion of the box.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

An ordinary match box having the enveloping cover or case and. box forms the frame work ofrny invention.

I In mounting. the breaking device is attached to box 1, in such way that clamp lugs 11 are inserted in the perforations ofthe boxcase, with hole 10 of theplate fitting conformably over hole 5 of the box-case 1 when the points of clamp lugs 11 are turned down upon the inside of box-case 1, as indicated in Fig. 4. securing the breaking device 8 firmly to the box-case 1. j

The holes 5 and. 10 provided with the pointed off-set are so provided for the jourpose of admitting the insertion of the burnt end of a match. In use the box Fig. 5, is slid partly open in the case 1, past hole 5. and the match end inserted in the hole made by conjunction of holes 5 and 10, when with .a slight side and downward motion of the outward end of the match it will be found that the charred end of the match will be easily broken off, falling outside of box. For the purpose of breaking the ends off matches when holding the box in different positions with the box Fig. 5 securely enclosed in case 1, I have provided an outwardly disposed corrugated tapering pocket 9 in a side, and a similar one 9 in the end, of breaking device 8. each so formed that when breaking device 8 is attached securely to the side of box-base 8 as shown in Fig. 1. and a match end is inserted therein slight side pressure by the hands upon the match will break the charred end of the match off.

It will be observed that the corrugations 9 and 9 of plate 8 are made suitably large and, with their pointed ends sufficiently open that the charred end of the'match when broken off will fall freely out without clogging the corrugation. 7

I claim:

1. in combination with a match box havins; a matchbox case. the matchbox case having hole in one. of its sides; the hole having a downwardly pointed off-set: a match-box case having a match breaking device outwardly secured by suitable means to one of its sides: said match breaking de vice having a hole provided with a downwardly pointed off-set in its surface stationed. adjacent one of sides confo ma le to the hole in the box case, multiple corrugate means in the side and end of said match breaking device, clamp lug means for securing said match breaking device to the box case; perforations suitably conformable to the clamp lugs of said match breaking device, provided in the side of said box case, all for the purposes specified.

2. In a match box having a match-box case providedwith open ends, said matchbox case having in one of its sides a hole provided with a downwardly pointed off-set, said hole positioned suitably for alignment with a similar hole provided in a breaking device when said breaking device is securely mounted upon said box; a breaking device having hole means therein secured to the match-box case in such manner that the hole means of the breaking device fits conformable to the hole means provided in the match-box case.

3. In a match box having a match-box case provided with open ends, and a hole having a downwardly pointed offset in one of its sides, suitable for alignment with similar hole means provided in a breaking devire, when secured thereto, perforations in one of its sides adjacent the hole therein, the perforations suitable to receive the lugs of a breaking device, the breaking device secured to said match-box case on the side containing the hole, by clamp lug means clamped through perforations in such side.

4:. In a match box having a match-box case provided with an open end, hole means in one of its sides and a breaking device having hole means disposed near its center,

the breaking device secured by lug means to the side of the box case in such manner that the hole of the breaking device fits conformably to the hole means in such side, said breaking device having multiple corrugations; the breaking device having one corrugation opening upwardly from near its center, and another corrugation opening at right angles from the other corrugation, each of said corrugations tapering closingly toward the center of the breaking device, their inward ends approaching each other at right angles, al for the purposes specified.

5. ln a match box having a match-box case provided with an open end, hole means in one of its sides and a breaking device lia'w hole n'ieans disposed in its surface, the breaking device secured by any suitable means to the side of the box case in such manner that the hole of the breaking device fits conformably to the hole means insuch side; said breaking device secured by suitable means to such box case; the breaking device having n'iutiple corrugations openiug outmardly one of the corrugations openupwardly from near LllQ center, another of the corrugations opening horizontally from near its center, each of said corrugations tapering closingly toward the center f breaking device, with their inward 5 L110 ends approaching each other at right angles, all for the purposes specified.
