  • Fig. i is avertical section thereof cut on the line 4 4 of Fig the direction of the arrow;
  • I provide a two duct feed controlling hopper I above the feed gate, a feed divider J below this gate, an adjust ble chute K within the ring movable or adjustable cheek pieces L at the sides of the ring, an improved casing, an improved frame or support, improved roll carriers, improved dust guards, improved rolls, improved pres sure means, improved aligning means, and various other features of improvement which I will now describe in detail as applied to a loose ring pulverizer.
  • Pulverizers of this general character discharge coarse and fine material and a sieve is used to separate the fine from the coarse and return the coarse to the pulverizer with fresh feed, and it is desirable that this returning coarse material should be pulverized as fast as it is returned so that fresh feed shall only be admitted after this coarse material is all pulverized.
  • My invention provides the two way hopper I for controlling character of feed: This is preferably mounted movably, removably or reversibly on the hopper G, and has a vertical conduit R having a top inlet 6 and a bottom outlet T fitting into the mouth or regulating chamber U of the hopper G,
  • the hopper I has one or more side inlets V and a fresh feed chamber orconduit W communicating with the side inlets so that fresh feed must enter the vertical conduit laterally of the descending column of returned material therein the weight of which will automatically prevent inflow of fresh feed when the conduit R is full of re turned material, thus insuring that returned materialshall be ground in precedence to fresh material so long as there is sufficient returned 'material to prevent ingress of fresh material, and that fresh material in- 1 gross shall be controlled by the presence of returned material.
  • the hopper I may be turned in any of four positions to dispose the fresh feed chamber WV where convenient, and the hopper I fits removably in the hopper G for this purpose instead of being formed integrally therewith.
  • I providewith or following the hopper I and between the regulating gate j and the feed spouts a movable or adjustable divider J for dividing the descending feed and apportioning it between the two sides of the ring so that it can flow on to the inner face of the ring at each side in suitable proportions to hold the ring in position axially or to compensate for its unequal wear so that it will run true centrally of the chamber 7 if the divider is adjusted to effect this.
  • any means movable transversely of the adjusting gate j may be used to divide the material but I prefer to hinge the vertical divider J above the bifurcated legs of the hopper G so that its upper edge can be swung under the gate to cut the stream of material as desired for each leg and to adjust this damper by a spring operated handle m engaging the teeth of a rack 02 and held therein by a spring 0.
  • a shelf 39 is provided above the damper for spreading the descending material.
  • I preferably also provide a movable 0r adjustable chute K for adjusting the delivery of'material on to theinner face of the ring which preferably slides axially of the ring on feet 9 held on supports 7, and which has wide sides 5 projecting in pockets 6 in the spouts. I to receive material descending through the latter.
  • the chute has a high back u and a contracted central mouth'o which discharges the material centrally or at either side of the "ring according to the adjustment of the chute.
  • the chute is automatically adjusted from the ring by levers w hinged from pivots w and having upper ends y struck by the ring when it moves excessivelyto one side and lower ends 2 carrying the chute and moving it reversely of the movement of the ring to cause the chute to feed material to one side or the other of the center of the ring in opposition to the axial movement of the ring for the purpose of resisting or correcting this.
  • I also provide movable and removable sectional passive cheek pieces L at each side of the ring for limiting flow of material therefrom and preventing its contact with the casing.
  • these each have a lug or projection X resting on a ledge Y and are adjustably connected by a bolt Z so that they are passive relatively to but can slide axially of the ring to adapt themselves to the position it assumes and can be adjusted to regulate fineness of discharge or take up wear.
  • the bolts Z extend from one to the other side of the ring to connect their cheek pieces, and may be at its outside when the ring is loose, but should be inside when the ring is the driving part.

  • Each dust guard has a clearance hole around the shaft, and between each bearin and dust guard are two sliding washers held apart by springs and supported on a revolving collar Q slidingly mounted and feathered on the shaft to prevent leakage of dust along the shaft or of oil from the hearing.
  • the shaft sustains the sliding washers which work 'in slideways or sockets in the rocking'dust guards so that they cannot. revolve but are free to slideandprevent leakage as the shaft wears into the bearing metal bushing.

Pulverizers of this general character discharge coarse and fine material and a sieve is used to separate the fine from the coarse and return the coarse to the pulverizer with fresh feed, and it is desirable that this returning coarse material should be pulverized as fast as it is returned so that fresh feed shall only be admitted after this coarse material is all pulverized.
My invention provides the two way hopper I for controlling character of feed: This is preferably mounted movably, removably or reversibly on the hopper G, and has a vertical conduit R having a top inlet 6 and a bottom outlet T fitting into the mouth or regulating chamber U of the hopper G,
' which vertical conduit receives the coarse material returned from the sieve or separator and delivers it in a vertical column or path to the chamber U of the hopper. The hopper I has one or more side inlets V and a fresh feed chamber orconduit W communicating with the side inlets so that fresh feed must enter the vertical conduit laterally of the descending column of returned material therein the weight of which will automatically prevent inflow of fresh feed when the conduit R is full of re turned material, thus insuring that returned materialshall be ground in precedence to fresh material so long as there is sufficient returned 'material to prevent ingress of fresh material, and that fresh material in- 1 gross shall be controlled by the presence of returned material.
As shown the hopper I may be turned in any of four positions to dispose the fresh feed chamber WV where convenient, and the hopper I fits removably in the hopper G for this purpose instead of being formed integrally therewith.
Preferably I providewith or following the hopper I and between the regulating gate j and the feed spouts a movable or adjustable divider J for dividing the descending feed and apportioning it between the two sides of the ring so that it can flow on to the inner face of the ring at each side in suitable proportions to hold the ring in position axially or to compensate for its unequal wear so that it will run true centrally of the chamber 7 if the divider is adjusted to effect this. Any means movable transversely of the adjusting gate j may be used to divide the material but I prefer to hinge the vertical divider J above the bifurcated legs of the hopper G so that its upper edge can be swung under the gate to cut the stream of material as desired for each leg and to adjust this damper by a spring operated handle m engaging the teeth of a rack 02 and held therein by a spring 0. Preferably a shelf 39 is provided above the damper for spreading the descending material. By prope rly regulating the damper, undue axial stress or movement of the ring or rolls may be obviated, and these parts can be approximately maintained in true positions. I preferably also provide a movable 0r adjustable chute K for adjusting the delivery of'material on to theinner face of the ring which preferably slides axially of the ring on feet 9 held on supports 7, and which has wide sides 5 projecting in pockets 6 in the spouts. I to receive material descending through the latter. The chute has a high back u and a contracted central mouth'o which discharges the material centrally or at either side of the "ring according to the adjustment of the chute. Preferably the chute is automatically adjusted from the ring by levers w hinged from pivots w and having upper ends y struck by the ring when it moves excessivelyto one side and lower ends 2 carrying the chute and moving it reversely of the movement of the ring to cause the chute to feed material to one side or the other of the center of the ring in opposition to the axial movement of the ring for the purpose of resisting or correcting this.
Preferably I also provide movable and removable sectional passive cheek pieces L at each side of the ring for limiting flow of material therefrom and preventing its contact with the casing. As shown these each have a lug or projection X resting on a ledge Y and are adjustably connected by a bolt Z so that they are passive relatively to but can slide axially of the ring to adapt themselves to the position it assumes and can be adjusted to regulate fineness of discharge or take up wear. The bolts Z extend from one to the other side of the ring to connect their cheek pieces, and may be at its outside when the ring is loose, but should be inside when the ring is the driving part.
The side or cover C preferably has a roll hole M opposite each roll and large enough to pass the adjacent roll through it and each roll hole is preferably closed by a roll cover N having a shaft slot Z which is closed by a rocking dust guard 0 (see Fig. 53) which has a semi-cylindrical projection mounted slidingly in the bored inner end of the bearingcari y the wei'ght'of the dust guard from the' bearing and'cause it to swing with the bearingwhile it is held against the cover N to close its shaft slot. Each dust guard has a clearance hole around the shaft, and between each bearin and dust guard are two sliding washers held apart by springs and supported on a revolving collar Q slidingly mounted and feathered on the shaft to prevent leakage of dust along the shaft or of oil from the hearing. The shaft sustains the sliding washers which work 'in slideways or sockets in the rocking'dust guards so that they cannot. revolve but are free to slideandprevent leakage as the shaft wears into the bearing metal bushing. The side or cover C is preferably of'less diameter than the innerdiameter of the ringfso that the ring can be removed over it through thering' aperture is, which is preferably an annular space through which the ring can be remoi ed when the adjacent removable annular wall (L1. of the casing is withdrawn, thus permitting removal of the ring without removing the rolls or their bearings at one side, while the side or cover C is larger than the ring and carries the roll covers N which permit the removal of any roll through that side without removing the ring or other rolls.
According to the preferred form of my invention I support the rell carriers swingingiy from pivotal axes disposed inwardly of the inner face of thQ ring, and I suspend the lower roll"carriers'directly on and swing them positively from fixed axes above their rolls and preferably nearly over their center of gravity and I dispose these parts sufficiently inwardly so that the ring can be passed over them without removing them and so that the lower rolls will move approximately horizontally. As shown the upper carrier D is keyed on a shaft 5 and each roll carrier E is keyed On a shaft c extending through the ring and connecting the carriers at"eachside of the rolls, and these shafts are inwardly of the spouts F,
According to anether feature of improvement preferably support the parts inclependently of the casing by a skeleton frame or support Aflpreferal'ily formed as a separate'rernovable piece mounted on the base B and havinga supporting side/l extending from the base upwardly at one side of the ring, an overhangngside c at the other side of and of less size than the inner diameter of the ring, and tubular connections 7' between these parts for sustaining these spaced sides, which connections have at opposite sides of the die, and inwardly of its innerperiphery, sustaining, guiding or supporting", positioning provisions for positioning'th'e non-rotative carriers for the rolls, which as shown'serve as'bearings" for the pivotal shafts of the carriers. The frame is constructed with recesses or apertures opposite'the rolls, those in the side al being larger than the rolls so that these can be removed therethrougl'i. The frame has spaced legs g connected by a lower side wall 72 on its supporting side, and has cross-bars 2' and cross ends j gconnected at its other side by a recessed side wall 76 the upper edge of which is sufficiently spaced apart from the small side or cover C to afford clearance for the lower part of the ring, which is removed by sliding it out through this space. The end walls j are inclined and serve as chutes for the ground material, and afford between them and the side walls passage to the discharge outlet H. The weight of the crushing parts is carried by the frame A which sustains all the other parts of the pulverizer except the outer casing.
According to another feature of improvement the sides C and C are separate and ren'iovable-instead of being formed integrally with thefra-me, and are mounted thereon so that they can be renewed if broken as these sides and the cheek pieces andouter casing are subject to wear. Preferably the sides are recessed to bring the dust guards close tothe rolls and afford sufficient hearing width without unduly widening the ma chine, and the side C has a lower recess in notch m coinciding with a smaller recess or notch Z in the frame which together afford a manhole closed by a cover 12 and large enough to give access below the ring as well as within it.
The casing A preferably comprises a sectional sheet metal peripheral part 0 having an arc-shaped side wall p fitting the edge of the cover C on one side and on the other side the casing is closed by the annular cover a fitting the edge of the cover C Any section 0 can be'removed to remove the corresponding cheek piece section. A wear piece attached to each lower section 0 extends to the outlet H.
According to the preferred form of my improvements the crushing springs are dis-' posed inwardly of the roll shafts and inter mediate of their carriers and act outwardly toward these and react from one to another so that the pressure of each roll is trans mitted to and divided between the others and all the crushing pressure is consumed between the ring and rolls so that none is lost in the bearings or pivotal supports. As shown the pressure springs (Z are three divergently acting compression members each extending from the carrier inwardly to an intermediate member 13 which is preferably tree to more to'equalize its position between the springs so that the pressure on each roll will be the same. The member B preferably pivotally or rockingly connected to the springs and the springs are preferably similarly connected to their bear ings respectively so that they can adapt themselves to the varying movements of the latter.
According to another feature of improvement the crushing springs are collapsible to adjust their pressure or permit the rolls. to be moved inward away from the ring, and are adjustable from the maximum pressure position at right angles to the axis of the rolls to an inclined position sufficient to free the rolls from the ring. Preferably the member B is a nut and the screw 6 enga.ges it to adjust the springs, and'the latter are each individually adjustable by screws r Preferably the crushing springs are duplicated at each side of the ring, and I prefer to insure equalizing of pressure at each side by connecting these springs together by the screws and operating the springs at a slight opposite inclination so that the screw can move to equalize the pressure on each side. For a loose ring mill the springs may collapse outwardly and the connecting screw be a tension member, but for a driven ring mill it is more economical of space to incline the springs inwardly and make the screw a compression member.
My invention provides a lock or knuckle jointed provision or stop 8 for preventing the spring from buckling past the dead center while permitting them to move in the other direction.
This arrangement permits the springs to adapt themselves to difference in wear of the rolls or to variations in thickness of terial, or to imperfections in adjustment, and insures an equilibrium of condition at each side of the rolls.
To support the parts when applied to a loose ring pulverizer my invention provides yielding supports for the top roll adapted to carry the weight of the ring, rolls and their bearings and. springs. This is preferably a spring D below the upper roll and sustaining the latter through rocking levers E and rods F which are adjustable by screws G to raise the top roll to provide for wear, or to lower it to permit its removal.
In a loose ring mill. it is important that the bearings of the top roll especially should be preserved in parallelism, and my invention preferably provides an equalizer for this purpose which may be any parallel motion device, but i preferably provided by inter-engaging arms ll on the rocking supporting levers E which mesh so that they must move together as the top bearings rise and fall with adjustment or under the action of the spring D and compel these hearings to move uniformly.
In operation the return feed controls inlet to fresh feed. the divider apportions the feed at each side of the ring, the distributing chute positions it on the ring, the driven top roll revolves the ring and that revolves the lower rolls, the feed is crushed by these rolls which swing on their pivotal mountings against the pressure of-the intermediate springs. These springs float or move to equalize the pressure on each side of the rolls, and are adjusted to vary the pressure and to provide for Wear. The springs are collapsed to remove the ring or any roll, and are individually adjusted to act uniformly. The removable sides will be renewed when worn, the cheek pieces will be rep-laced by rempving the outer casing, and the feed hopper will be turned to conveniently dispose its double conduits.
It will be seen that this invention provides improvements which can be readily and advantageously availed of in whole or in partin connection with pulverizers of the various types, and it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular details of construction, arrangement, combination of parts or use set forth as illustrating its preferred embodiment since it can be employed in whole or in part according to such modifications of these as circumstances or the judgment of those skilled in the art may dictate without departing from the spirit of the invention.
One such; modification is shown in Figs. to 10 inclusive, in. which the corresponding parts have corresponding reference letters. In this construction the? fixed axes are outside of the ring, and the feed chutes are inwardly of the axes, and pressure springs are used. outside of the casing.
According to my invention the roll a comprises a. recessed hub 14 and a shell '0 having inward projections entering the recesses for fastening it on the hub.
