Description

1,450,726 C. W. HOLBROOK BUFFER FOR PICKERS Apr. 3, 1'923.
Filed May 6, 1922 Patented Apr. 3, 1923.
CHARLES W. HOLBROOK, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUFFER FOR PICKERS.
Application filed May 6, 1922. Serial No. 558,857.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. HOL- nnoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iuffers for Pickers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buffers or bunter checks for loom pickers land particularly for pickers of the reversible type.
The essential objects of my invention are durability; to afford a requisite cushioning y eiect while avoidingthe recoil incident to the use of buffers having rubber as a confst-ituent part or in the form ot loops or rings; to ail'ord such toughness as to avoid tearing ordeformation, and to prevent tracture, and to prevent torque of the vpicker and to avoid strains.
To lthe above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations ot' parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view oi the portions of the loom adjacent the picker, in vwhich my buffer is shown in plan,
Figure 2, a perspective view of the buffer., -and Figure 3, a section of the latter on line of Figure 2. j
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings 4 is the shuttle box, A5 the guide plate` tithey picker rod, 7 the picker stick, and one end oi a loom lay. A shuttle 10 in the shuttle box is shown contacting with an operating tace of a picker 12 slidable on its rod 6 and extending through the guide slot 13 ot the guide plate. The picker comprises as usual the broadbody 15 and retracted neck 16 and head 17 whereby are formed lateral recesses .or cut away portions 18. It is in conjunction with these familiar parts that my buffer 2O Lwill bedescribed.
This member is oblong comprising a broadl head portion 21 which is tapering forwardly, as at 22, to merge in a forward neck portion 23.'
The buii'er is composed of a series of Ysuperposed strips or layers 25 of raw hide so disposed that their edges constitute the 8 the trame support of front and back operating faces 26 and 27 respectively. This edgewise arrangement of the layers is essential. rIhe layers, with cement placed therebetween, are subjected to hydraulic pressure. Near its end the neck portion 23 of the butter is provided with a horizontal hole 29 for slidably receiving the rod 6, and with vertical holes 30 to receive rivets 31. The head portion 21 also has a vertical hole 32 to receive a rivet 33. The buffer extends through the slot 13 of `the guide plate intermediate the picker and loom portion 8. f
Itwill be observed that the contact or' the picker face is against the edges of the layers 25 upon the tace 26, and that the Jface 27, adapted to abut the' loom portion 8, has the edges of the layers presented to the latter,
It will be observed that the head and the neck of the buffer are adapted to receive the imp-act or the picker head and the picker body respectively, and thus distortion of the picker is prevented. In operation the shuttle first contact-s with the picker and then` they latter is moved against the butter and by reason of the face contact at opposite sides of the picker both ends thereoi'A are'cushioned and the picker is kept square on its spindle, thus preventing torque.
I claim l. A buffer for looms comprising a broad head portion adapted to receive the impact yof a picker'head and a narrow portion to receive the impact of. the picker body.
2. A buffer for looms comprising a broad head portion to receive Athe impact ot a picker head and a narrow neck portion to receive the impact or the picker body, said head and neck portions consisting of superposed layers of. tough material disposed with their edges constituting the operating ace of the buffer.
A buier for looms comprising a broad head portion adapted to receive the impact of a picker head and a narrow neck portion to receive the impact of a picker body` the said head and neck portions formed of superposed layers of tough material disposed with their edges to constitute the impact face of the buffer, and means holding said layers in close contactual engagement with each other throughout their length.
.Y In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
