This invention relates to a picker of the character used on looms, and has for its object to provide an article of this character which will be strong and simple in construction and which will beextremely durable under constant use.

A further object of this invention is to provide a picker having those portions which contact with the loom shuttle renewable and arranged so that when the same become worn from contact with the pointed end of the shuttle, they may be removed and new contactin portions inserted.

A fiirther object of this invention is to provide those portions of a picker which contact with the shuttle of an extremely tough and durable fibrous material so that the same can withstand the impact of the shuttle whereby an extremely durable article is roduced.

ith these objects and other objects which may hereinafter appear in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Throughout the various views of the drawing, simllar reference characters designate similar parts.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 indicatesthe body portion of the plckerwhich is in the form of a fiat section of fibrous material such as horn, raw-hide or fiber. I have found that fiber or a similar fibrous material is particularly adaptable for use in forming pickers of this character.

Near one of its ends, the picker is provided with an aperture 14 through which a bar 2 extends. Thisbar 2 is a conventional portion of a loom and acts as a guide member for the picker which slides thereon and strikes against the shuttle 3 sending the same across the loom.

At one of its ends, the picker is provided with a pair of reinforcing strips 5 which form a t ickened end at the wider endof the body portion 1 of the picker. These strips 5 co-operate with a narrow strip 15 secured between them to form enclosingmeans for the wider end of the body portion and form a thickened portion at that point. Portions of the strips 5 and 15 are positioned so that they unite in forming an aperture 1 1. The outer end of the body portion 1 is narrowed as at 16 and on either side of the same is secured a pair of reinforcing blocks 7 and 8, said blocks 7 and 8 being secured to the body portion 1 by means of rivets or the like, and forming a thickened portion at the narrowed end of the picker. Thus the picker is provided with a pair of thickened ends and a central thinner portion. A strip 16 at the narrower end of the body portion is inserted between the ends of the blocks 7 and 8 and is in all respects similar to that designated at 15.

At 10 are a pair of inserts or plugs of a I .tough fibrous material similar to that of which the body. of the picker is formed. These plugs 10 are arranged so that the grain of the material from which they are constructed extends transversely of the shuttle and similarly transversely of the picker, thereby. providing strengthened portions of the picker at the point of contact of the shuttle therewith. The plugs 10 are readily removable when worn, and new plugs may be replaced. It will be seen that these plugs 10 are so placed that when the picker is moved on its support 2 by means of a bar 11 extending, through an aperture 12 in the body of the picker, the pointed end 13 of the shuttle will contact with. the plug 10. When one of the plugs 10 becomes worn by constant contact with the shuttle the picker is merely reversed on its support 2 to bring the plug on the opposite side of the picker so of the fact that these plugs are renewable,

very little Wear to the body of the picker occurs.

In order that the portions of the picker adjacent the plugs 10 in the head thereof will be reinforced against the blows of the shuttle and'that the strips 7 and 8 will be prevented from separation I provide a reinforcing means as at 17. This reinforclng means is in the nature of a binding strip arranged to fit over each end of the head of the picker as disclosed in Figure 4. As disclosed the portion 18 of the reinforcing strips may be countersunk into the part 1 of the picker.

Figure 5 shows a modified protective means in the nature of a sleeve 19 which fits over the end of the picker and which is provided in two of its opposite walls with openings 20 through which the shuttle can contact with the plug 10.

2. A device of the class described comprising a picker having a central body portion of a single thickness, reinforcing strips secured at the ends of said body portion and forming thickened portions, a guide receiving aperture extending through one of said thickened portions, a pair of plugs of fibrous material inserted in the other thickened por tion and a reinforcing binder embracing the thickened portion in which the plugs are inserted.
