LOCK BOLT. nun AUG-25. 1919.

Patented Feb. 27, 1923s UNETED JOHN SHAFT, OF NEVV- HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SARGENT 8c COIVZPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LOOK BOLT.
Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No. 319,682.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JoHN H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing: in the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loch bolts, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to means for pre venting the portion of a bolt which protrudes from its look, from being cut off by a person attempting to open a door by attacking its lock in this manner.
It is often possible for an unauthorized person to obtain access to a building or room, when the door leading in to the same is locked, simply by inserting a saw blade between the door and its door jamb to saw the protruding portion of the bolt off. This mode of attack may be readily used when the door through which entrance is desired swings outwardly, as the crack between the edge of a door and its door jamb is nearly always wide enough to admit a small saw blade. v
The object of my invention, therefore, is to frustrate this mode of attacking a protruding bolt, by constructing the same so that a saw or other cutting instrument will not cut through the bolt.
To this and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a sliding bolt removed from its lock showing my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a front end view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of. the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawing 1 have shown my invention as applied to a well-known type of dead bolt adapted to he slid. back and forth within its look, but it will be apparent that the invention herein disclosed may readily be applied to various types of bolts, and that it may be used to protect either dead bolts or latch bolts.
1 have used the numeral 10 to designate the head of the bolt shown in the drawing,
and I have designated the body portion of this bolt by the numeral 1], but it will be apparent that the construction of the body portion 11 of the bolt is immaterial so far as my invention is concerned, since my invention consists in so constructing the head 10 of the bolt that the portion of the. same which protrudes beyond its lock case, cannot be out 0111' by. a saw or othe' cutting instrument when the bolt is protruded to lock the door carrying the same, in its closed position. In odcr to accomplish this object, 1 form plurality of drill holes in the head '10 of the bolt, the drill holes preferably extending inwardly from the front face of the bolt head as shown, and in these drill holes are mounted hardened pins or rollers 12, the same preferably being so. mounted within these drill holes that they are free to, rotate within the same, to thereby better resist a cutting tool used upon the bolt in an eifort to out through the same.
in order to retain the pins or rollers 12 within their drill holes, the outer ends of these drill. holes are preferably closed by metal disks or plugs 13, the same being seated in shallow sockets formed in the front face of the head 10. In the drawing I have shown the bolt as provided with two pins or rollers 12, one being mounted within the bolt head near the upper edge of the head, while the other pin is mounted. within the same near the lower edge of the head, but it will be apparent that the bolt head may be provided with as many of these protecting pins as may be desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is desirable to provide the bolt head with more than one of these protecting pins in order to prevent the protruding end of the bolt from being cut oft by sawing through the bolt downwardly as far as the single pin with which the same is provided and then sawil upwardly from the lower face of the bolt to this pm.
From the above descri iition. when in connection with the drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided very simple and inexpensive means for prev u ng an unauthoried person from obtaining entrance to a room or building by inserting a saw between the edge of the door and its door iamb to saw 05. the protruding portion of the lock bolt.
It will be apparent that various minor changes may be made from the construction illustrated in the drawing without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the annexed claims.
YVhat I claim is 1. In a look, a bolt provided with a broadened head having a plurality of openings drilled therein from the front face thereof,
hardened pins mounted in said openings,
shallow sockets provided in the head, communicating and in alignment with said drilled openings and closure plugs seated in said sockets, said openings being located one above the other closely adjacent the opposite edges of said bolt.
2. In a look, a bolt provided with abroadened head, having openings drilled therein from the front face thereof, hardened pins looselyvmounted in said openings, shallow sockets provided in the head, communicatmounted in each of said openings, a shallow socket provided in the head communicating and in alignment with each of the drilled openings and closure plugs seated in said sockets, the diameter of said sockets being greater than that of the openings said openings being spaced to provide a larger portion of said bolt between same than without same whereby said larger portion is protected against action thereupon by a cutting instrument.
4. A bolt for a lock movable to a position to protrude from said lock, said protruding portion of the bolt having holes formed longitudinally therein adjacent the upper and lower edges of said bolt respectively and hardened pins rotatably mounted Within said holes to resist the action of a cutting instrument used upon said protruding portion of-said bolt and prohibit such action against the portion of said bolt lying between sa'idpins.
5. A bolt for a lock having a' protrudable portion, said portion having a-pair of hardened pins rotatably mounted longitudinally therein, said pins being spaced to leave a larger portion of said boltbetween the same than without the same, said pins thereby protecting the portion of said bolt between the same against the action of a cutting instrument.
6. A sliding bolt having a protrudable end, said end having a plurality of hardened pins rotatably mounted longitudinally therein, said pins spaced apart to provide a protected area of b'olt between the same 7 against possible action of a cutting instrument.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand on the 20th day of August, 1919.
7 JOHN H. SHAW.
