To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH L. CHRISTEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city. of Seattle, countyof King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Means for WVindow-Stops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to windows, and more particularly to the means employed for securing the windows in place in such a manner that they may be readily removed for cleaning, or any other purpose.

The chief object of my invention is to provide means whereby the window may be made conveniently removed from the casing for any purpose, as in order to make accessible the outer surface of the glass for the purpose of cleaning, as easily as is the inner. It consists essentially of a means for quickly removing and again securing in place the stops and parting strips by which the window sashes are held and guided in the casing.

The features which I deem to be new and upon which I wish patent protection will first be described and then particularly pointed out by the claim.

In the accompanying drawings T have shown my device incorporated in the type of construction which I most prefer to use.

Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section taken through a window and the sashes thereof.

Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the casing at one side of a window, showing the manner of securing the stops and parting strips.

Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the means employed for securing the parting strips in place.

Fig. l shows, in perspective, one side of the casing and that part of the parting strip which carries the securing means.

Fig. 5 shows, in perspective, the plate which is secured to the face of the casing and by which the parting strip is secured thereto.

Fig. 6 shows, in perspective, a portion of a parting strip with the locking means carried thereby.

Fig. 7 is a transverse section through a portion of the casing, a parting strip and the means for securing the same in place.

In the main the construction of the window sash and casing may be of customary type. In particular my invention does not involve any special construction in the sashes. In the drawings 1 represents the nner stop and 2 the parting strip which 1s customarily placed between the twosashes. The manner of securing these parts in place is identical in each case and a description of one willsufiice for both.

The lower portions of both parting strip and stop, extending from the window sill upwardly to a point slightly above the upper edge of the lower sash when the same is down, is made removable. The upper ends of these removable sections are indicated at 10 and 20. T have herein shown means for removably securing these strips in position on the face of the casing at two points. If these strips were of any great length, or if it be desired to more thoroughly secure them in place, these securing means might be increased in number as much as may be desired.

The parting strip 2, or the stop 1, as the case may be, has journaled therein a short shaft or bar 3. This extends through the strip and has its inner end projecting from the inner face of said strip. This inner end is also provided with a radially extending finger 30. The outer end of the shaft 3 is provided with any suitable means whereby the same may be turned as desired. The means herein shown for turning the same consist of a button 40, secured to said shaft so that the two must turn together.

The face of the casing has recessed therein a plate 5, so that the outer surface thereof is flush with the surface of the casing at that particular point. This plate has a hole 50 therein, of such shape as topermit the passage of the inner end of the shaft 3, together with the finger 30 thereof. This forms a slot which is of key-hole shape, as is clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The inner face of the plate 5, immediately surrounding the eye portion of the key-hole slot, is provided with an inclined surface 51 against which one edge of the finger 30 engages, so that by turning the shaft, the parting strip or stop will be drawn securely against the face of the casing. This cam surface may be provided in any manner which is found suitable, either by increasing the thickness of the metal on one side or by decreasing it at the opposite side, or by a combination of the two. In connection with the shaft 3 I prefer to provide it with a collar 81 which is lo- V cated just inside of the outer plate or escutcheon 6. Theattached end of the button 40, serves as the thrust member against which it is drawn in tightening the stop or parting strip against the surface of the casing.

The 'stop and the parting strip may be made with their inner surfaces flush with the outer surface of the casing 7, if this be desired. Such construction is shown in F ig. 2. However, if desired, and in order to more thoroughly'hold these strips against lateral movement, the casing 7'may be recessed for the reception of these strips, as is commonly done atpresent, and the plate 5 be located in the bottom of such recess. This is shown in Fig. 7 whereinj70 represents the recess in the sash of'the casing. i Q

When it is desired to remove the window sash, the stop 1 and partingstrip 2 may be removed by turning the securing bolts or shafts 3, into position such that they may be removed from the plates 5; If it be desired to remove the upper sash, it will then be necessary to also remove the )artmg strip 2 111 a simllar manner. this may be then cleaned on its outer surface without leaving the room, and in a very con- -ven1ent manner. The stop and parting strlp may be. quickly secured in place when desired. 7

What I claim as my invention is: V

The combination with a window casing .having inserted therein metal plates provided each with a keyhole slot and an inner cam surface about the head of said slot, stop strips having extending therethrough revoluble shafts with their inner ends projecting and provided with a lateral web adapted to pass through said keyhole slot, the outer endsof said shafts having a thrust bearing collar and an operating button, an ear proj ecting therefrom'and fitting tightly against the lower window sash when said sash is-in closed position, and extending upon both RALPH L; OHRISTENSON.
